Legendary actor Moditle ‘Boikie' Pholo to be honoured for his role in shaping creative arts
SA acting legend Moditle 'Boikie' Pholo is set to be honoured at the annual Khuma Film Festival.
Boikie is best known for playing the lead role in the 1980s television sitcom Lesilo. He also starred as Mmusisi Ratau in the SABC1 sitcom Ga Re Dumele.
The Khuma Film Festival will be held at the Philemon Masinga Sports Complex from May 28 to May 30. It serves as a crucial platform for recognising emerging and established filmmakers.
This year's celebration, set against the backdrop of the North West landscape, will not only highlight talent within the region but also unite communities through a shared love of cinema.
The second Annual Khuma Film Festival is poised to light up the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district municipality with a star-studded event that promises to honour one of Orkney and the province's finest in veteran actor Boikie, whose contribution to the country's film industry has left an indelible mark on audiences and aspiring actors.
Festival founder Naomi Mokhele said: 'We have curated brilliant films that will not only resonate with our audiences, but will also inspire young people to tell their own stories in a unique way. As the festival aims to establish a film industry in the area and create a film appreciative community, we hope the foundation we have built will ultimately result in reaching the goals'.

'Being in the hot seat of the show that I've hosted for so long was a wild, wild experience. 'First of all I had no idea that the crew and the cast were going to throw that curveball my way,' Maboe told The Citizen at the time. In cahoots with the banker, media personality Hulisani Ravele flipped the script on Maboe when the faceless money man, who always relays all his messages through Maboe, demanded to speak to the former YoTV presenter. Ravele broke the news to Maboe that the banker instructed her to run the show for this special episode, and he would be the one in the hot seat. The second season of the show will premiere on SABC 1 on Saturday at 6:00pm. 'I've stayed with the organisation since 2014 because I've noticed that they're a group of really dedicated people who are very focused on the work that they do,' said the bubbly media personality. Hope Cape Town provides holistic services in medical treatment, care, and support to numerous marginalised communities adversely affected by HIV/Aids. The non-governmental organisation (NGO) showed appreciation to Maboe on social media. Although Maboe and other celebrities funnelled substantial amounts of cash to various NGOs, courtesy of show sponsor LottoStar, only two hit the jackpot prize of R250 000 with their ingenious gameplay and Lady Luck smiling upon them. Rorisang Thandekiso donated her winnings to a charity close to her heart, Paediatric Care Africa, while Pearl Modiadie chose the Tshepang Care Centre from her hometown, Thembisa. Paediatric Care Africa – an NGO providing general and specialist medical care to children countrywide, including secluded areas with no or limited access to doctors and hospitals – used the donation to pay for the shipping and road transport of a 40-feet container from the UK, filled with critical medical equipment, hospital furniture, walkers, wheelchairs and buggies. 'The quality of life of many children and their caregivers changed dramatically due to this export made possible by Deal or No Deal Celebrity and LottosStar,' said Joyce Cromptvoets, Head of Office at Paediatric Care Africa. For Sarah Sibiya, the founder of the Tshepang Care Centre, the quarter of a million rand from Modiadie's win is much more than a donation. 'Before we had received the money, we struggled to keep the centre going. It has brought hope, love and much-needed support to our community,' said Sibiya. LottoStar's Head of Marketing, Maria Pavli, said such stories are a reminder of the pride they have in supporting the show. 'It's a rare opportunity to be part of something that's not only entertaining but truly life-changing,' said Pavli. Actor Moditle 'Boikie' Pholo honoured during film festival in North West
The festival's opening night highlight was the prestigious lifetime achievement award presented to Boikie, who was celebrated by Sebabatso Media and the festival for his contribution to South Africa's film and TV industry. Boikie is known for his roles in productions such as Lesilo Rula, Soul Buddyz, Generations and The Queen. He was lauded for his hard work, dedication and humbleness during his illustrious career. In his acceptance address, he expressed gratitude for the recognition while he is still alive, saying: 'I thank Sebabatso Media and the Khuma Film Festival team for honouring me in this way. I have been keeping away from the public since I entered the afternoon part of my life, but Naomi [Mokhele, founder of Khuma Film Festival] came to find me. For that, I am eternally grateful. 'I also thank my colleagues from the big and small screens and the theatre stage for sharing their talent with me.' Mokhele said she was saddened by the death of Presley Chweneyagae and its impact on the county's film and TV industry. 'The passing of Presley has come as a shock to the Khuma Festival and the South African film industry. No-one expected to hear the news of his passing, especially because he was young, but most importantly, this country and millions of his fans expected him to continue wowing them with iconic TV, film and stage performances,' she said. 'A true icon of this industry, Presley meant so much to many of us. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, loved ones and his adoring fans.'

Veteran actor Boikie Pholo to be honoured at Khuma Film Festival
The festival takes place from 28 to 30 May. Legendary actor Moditle 'Boikie' Pholo, best known for his iconic role as Raitlhwana in Lesilo Rula, will be honoured at this year's Khuma Film Festival. The festival takes place from 28 to 30 May at the Philemon Masinga Sports Complex Hall in the North West Province. With a career spanning more than five decades, Pholo is being recognised for his outstanding contribution to the South African film and television industry. Festival director Neo Ntlatleng, who is also an award-winning actor and producer, said the decision to honour Pholo was long overdue. 'We are proud and honoured to celebrate our very own legend, Ntate Boikie Pholo. His work has inspired not only young people from the North West but generations across all nine provinces. 'It's about time we give our legends their flowers while they can still smell them.' Festival founder Naomi Mokhele said the festival has been carefully curated to resonate with local audiences and nurture future filmmakers. 'We want to inspire young people to tell their own stories. Our aim is to build a film industry in this region and a community that truly appreciates cinema,' Mokhele added. The festival will open with Sew the Winter to My Skin, Jahmil XT Qubeka's award-winning 2018 film about outlaw John Kepe in the 1950s Great Karoo. It will close with The Life and Times of Menzi Ngubane, a heartfelt documentary tracing the late actor's journey from 1987 to 2021. Beyond the big screen, the festival will feature workshops and masterclasses hosted by well-known industry figures such as Vincent Moloi, Robert Mpisi, Israel Matseke-Zulu, Thembile Botman and Didintle Khunou.
