Malaysia will not interfere in legal process over Indonesian oil tycoon, says Anwar
Indonesian weekly Tempo reported that Anwar had told several editors-in-chief in Jakarta on July 29 and informed them that he had met with Riza.
'Let the legal process in Indonesia take its course,' Anwar was quoted as saying.
Anwar also did not comment on the whereabouts of Riza, who is believed to be in Malaysia.
Acting Indonesian Immigration director-general Yuldi Yusman had on July 16 reportedly said that Riza is believed to be in Malaysia since Feb 6, having departed from Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
The Jakarta Post reported that Riza was named as a suspect in a corruption case linked to state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina.

Anwar said the compliment was conveyed during a phone call with the United States president on Thursday following Malaysia's success in bringing the Thai and Cambodian prime ministers to agree on a ceasefire after weeks of tension. "He said: 'Thank you Prime Minister Anwar for the fantastic job in bringing both Cambodian and Thai prime ministers together and securing a lasting peace'. "Three times he used the word fantastic," Anwar said at Felda Settlers' Day and Rural Entrepreneurs Carnival at Mitec here today. He said Malaysia's efforts were the result of coordinated work between the Foreign Ministry, the armed forces and the country's leadership, which enabled the two neighbouring nations to agree to halt hostilities. "Alhamdulillah, a ceasefire was achieved. Malaysia's name is now being spoken of from Washington to London, with people talking about our success in uniting Asean and achieving peace," he said. Anwar said he had remained in contact with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to monitor the situation. "I am still keeping in touch with Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia. I asked him about the situation and he said, 'Thank you very much prime minister, there is no fighting.' "But he asked for Malaysia's help to facilitate further talks," he added. He said that the Cambodian and Thai defence ministers were scheduled to come to Kuala Lumpur on Monday to discuss the next step towards securing lasting peace.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — Malaysia's peace and political stability have positioned the country as a credible mediator in facilitating reconciliation efforts between two Asean countries recently affected by conflict, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the strength and stability of Malaysia's government have earned the nation international recognition, leading to its selection as the coordinator for ceasefire negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia. 'The country remains peaceful because we have a strong government. Therefore, we must be cautious of any efforts aimed at weakening it. If the country were to fall into disarray, with constant conflict and political demands, who would come to us?' he said. Anwar made the remarks at the opening of the Mega 3D Carnival 2025 (MK3D 2025) at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) today. Malaysia secured reduced US tariff through strong leadership, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says that Malaysia's success in reducing the US tariff rate is due to effective leadership. He said the previous 25% tariff was a serious concern due to its potential economic impact. "The 25% tariff that worried us has been reduced to just 19%. If it had remained high, the impact on our economy would have been substantial. "We are a hub for semiconductors and electrical and electronics (E&E) in Southeast Asia. "Our exports to the United States alone make up 60% of total E&E exports – how much is that? Over RM200bil a year in exports to the US from E&E and semiconductors alone," he said on Saturday (Aug 2) at the National Felda Settlers' Day Celebration and Rural Entrepreneurs' Carnival He added that Malaysian semiconductor exports will continue to enjoy zero tariffs. "Semiconductors – once again – are not included in this tariff. Zero. We can export." Anwar said the achievement was due to leadership capable of navigating domestic and international complexities. "This is why leadership must have the ability to manage not just within the country but also internationally. "Some people ask what does it have to do with the US? It has to do with saving tens of thousands of our workers. It has to do with securing high tax revenues so they can be returned to the people," he said. He explained that the government had been engaged in months of negotiations because the 25% rate was simply too high. "We negotiated for months because the 25% tariff imposed on us was too high. There were conditions that were imposed." Anwar said that Malaysia's position is as a trading nation with broad global ties. "We trade with the US, with China, with India, with Australia, with the Arab world." He also highlighted Malaysia's leadership in organising key international forums, including a recent historic summit involving Asean, wealthy Arab Gulf nations, and China. "Two months ago, for the first time, we brought together Asean, the Gulf countries – rich Arab nations like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain – together with China. "This is a record. It was not done by me alone; Malaysia did it through the strength of the Malaysian people," Anwar said. He said Asean leaders acknowledged Malaysia's effectiveness, including the region's most senior figure. "A senior leader in Asean – the Sultan of Brunei – told me that although dozens of Asean summits have been held, he is proud because the Asean-Gulf-China summit in Kuala Lumpur was the largest and the most efficiently organised by our friends." Anwar concluded by stating that while Malaysia does not always agree with the policies of its partners, it remains firm and principled. "We do not agree with all policies, but we are a trading nation. We are friends with everyone, but we still dare to state our stance with courage."
