Nagpur: With just three days left for the annual Urs festival at revered Hazarat Baba Tajuddin Dargah in Tajbagh, the condition of the main approach road continues to pose a serious risk to the lakhs of devotees expected to visit.
The ongoing construction of a flyover along the stretch has left the road riddled with potholes, craters, and uneven surfaces, causing major inconvenience and danger to both motorists and pedestrians.
A visit by TOI on Monday revealed that the road condition has deteriorated drastically. Large parts of the road are damaged, and the usable width has significantly reduced due to barricading and construction material, leading to frequent traffic jams.
The road repair currently falls under the purview of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is currently building a 2.2-km-long flyover from Bhande Plot Square to Dighori. This flyover is part of the larger Rs998 crore project stretching from Indora to Dighori. The project includes two major flyovers — Kamal Chowk to Reshimbagh Square, and Bhande Plot to Dighori — meant to ease congestion in North and South Nagpur.
However, since work on the Bhande Plot-Dighori flyover began, the condition of the road underneath worsened considerably. The stretch sees heavy daily traffic as it passes through a busy marketplace, the Tajbagh, and a nearby college.
Taj Ahmed Raja, secretary of Hazarat Baba Tajuddin Trust, raised serious concerns over the safety of devotees. "The road is in poor condition because of the flyover work. During Urs, lakhs of devotees visit Tajbagh and they will be at risk if the road is not repaired urgently.
On July 22, Shahi Sandal will pass from the road and thousands will participate in it, they too will be at risk if the road is not repaired," said Raja.
He added that the issue was taken up in recent review meetings chaired by police commissioner Ravinder Singal. "The CP warned that if any mishap happens because of bad road conditions, then NHAI officials would be booked. He also asked NMC and MSEDCL officials to repair the street lights which are currently non-functional," Raja stated.
Adding to the concern, a local resident said that traffic congestion between Bhande Plot Square and Dighori has become a daily ordeal. "Every day minor accidents are being reported on the road and traffic jams have become common since the flyover work started. People regularly using the road have become frustrated," the local said.
When contacted, an NHAI official confirmed that repair works will be undertaken before the Urs begins, offering some hope to the thousands preparing to attend the religious event.

Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway to get ₹711 crore safety upgrade amid accidents: Report

The central government has approved a fund of ₹711.72 crore for significant safety and infrastructure enhancements on the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway. This 118-km, six-lane highway, which cost nearly ₹9,000 crore to build, has experienced frequent accidents since its inauguration three years ago, mainly due to poorly designed access points, lack of service roads, and inadequate pedestrian facilities, the Bangalore Mirror reported. The Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, spanning 118 km, was constructed at a cost of nearly ₹ 9,000 crore. (ANI image) Despite being an important route connecting Bengaluru and Mysuru, several segments of the expressway, particularly around Bidadi and Mandya, have faced criticism for incomplete or missing service roads and poorly planned entry and exit ramps. These flaws have contributed to many accidents, leading to widespread calls for better infrastructure, including pedestrian underpasses, bus bays, and toll systems based on actual travel distance, the report stated. Plans include constructing 14 new access ramps with toll plazas on both sides to allow toll collection based on distance travelled, thereby benefiting local commuters who currently pay flat fees. Additionally, 22.5 km of service roads will be added, improving connectivity along the expressway, it added. Other key additions in the project include seven pedestrian underpasses, three railway overbridges, a flyover near Mysuru's Manipal Hospital junction, 35 bus shelters, and two truck bays. The contract for this extensive work has been awarded, although the formal start date has not yet been announced. The new service roads and bus shelters are also expected to reduce traffic congestion, enhancing overall commuter safety and convenience, the report further stated.

From Bengaluru to Osaka: Loaded in crates, Bannerughatta Biological Park's 4 jumbos begin 20-hour flight trip

1 2 3 Bengaluru: Scripting a new chapter in wildlife conservation, four Asiatic elephants from Bannerughatta Biological Park (BBP) on the outskirts of Bengaluru embarked on an extraordinary journey from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to Osaka in Japan on Thursday night. Loaded onto a special chartered cargo flight (Boeing 777-200F) in a specially designed crate, the elephants were airlifted to Osaka in Japan. Flying for about 12 hours, the elephants will land in Osaka on Friday afternoon. On Saturday, the elephants—three females and one male—will proceed to Himeji Central Park-Safari Park, their new home for the rest of their lives, spanning a 20-hour long journey. This was the first-ever air transportation of elephants from BBP to an international destination, achieving a major milestone in the global zoological exchange of animals. The elephants will be accompanied by a team of veterinarians from BBP and Japan, as well as biologists and mahouts. Officials told TOI that over 25 BBP staff worked on this programme for close to six months, from designing the crates to training the elephants for the long-duration flight. "This was indeed a first experience for all of us. While the entire process itself was thrilling, it was filled with a lot of lessons," said AV Surya Sen, executive director of BBP. "Every day, they were made to enter, stay, and relax inside the crates for 3 to 4 hours, making them acclimatised to the conditions. From designing crates to transportation, all steps were executed as per the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animals Regulations. The aircraft was chosen keeping in mind the total weight of the elephants, and the travel is funded by Japanese zoo officials," Sen said. The elephants, secured in special crates, were loaded onto a special truck using a special crane at BBP and transported to KIA. The flight will only carry these crates, and there will not be any other cargo. Veterinarians said all elephants were fed before entering the crates. "During the trip, we'll only provide them with light refreshments, including glucose, cucumber, and other fruits. After landing, they will be examined in Osaka, before the final journey to Himeji Park," said a supervisor. A team of veterinarians and mahouts will camp in Japan for a month to help Japanese officials in looking after the elephants.

The Nagpur Division of Central Railway operated four special trains to ferry devotees from Mumbai and Nashik to Nagpur for the Urs, a significant socio-religious event attracting diverse communities. Divisional railway manager (DRM) Vinayak Garg emphasised the railway's commitment to serving India's rich cultural and religious diversity. "The Urs crowd management was a challenge due to the festival's unique appeal across various faiths. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure devotees travel safely," Garg stated. In order to manage over three lakh devotees attending the Urs, the Nagpur Division implemented comprehensive crowd control measures. Senior divisional commercial manager Aman Mittal detailed the arrangements, noting that 90 additional ticket-checking staff and 70 extra Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel were deployed. "We anticipated heavy commuter movement and devised elaborate plans to ensure smooth operations," Mittal said. The division has also set up a dedicated waiting area near Platform No. 8, from where the special trains, carrying over 5,000 passengers, are operating. Facilities have been set up for round-the-clock refreshments in this area to enhance commuter comfort. Five MUTS devices are being used to issue tickets efficiently, catering to the large volume of unreserved passengers travelling to the Urs.
