Nagpur: With just three days left for the annual Urs festival at revered Hazarat Baba Tajuddin Dargah in Tajbagh, the condition of the main approach road continues to pose a serious risk to the lakhs of devotees expected to visit.
The ongoing construction of a flyover along the stretch has left the road riddled with potholes, craters, and uneven surfaces, causing major inconvenience and danger to both motorists and pedestrians.
A visit by TOI on Monday revealed that the road condition has deteriorated drastically. Large parts of the road are damaged, and the usable width has significantly reduced due to barricading and construction material, leading to frequent traffic jams.
The road repair currently falls under the purview of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is currently building a 2.2-km-long flyover from Bhande Plot Square to Dighori. This flyover is part of the larger Rs998 crore project stretching from Indora to Dighori. The project includes two major flyovers — Kamal Chowk to Reshimbagh Square, and Bhande Plot to Dighori — meant to ease congestion in North and South Nagpur.
However, since work on the Bhande Plot-Dighori flyover began, the condition of the road underneath worsened considerably. The stretch sees heavy daily traffic as it passes through a busy marketplace, the Tajbagh, and a nearby college.
Taj Ahmed Raja, secretary of Hazarat Baba Tajuddin Trust, raised serious concerns over the safety of devotees. "The road is in poor condition because of the flyover work. During Urs, lakhs of devotees visit Tajbagh and they will be at risk if the road is not repaired urgently.
On July 22, Shahi Sandal will pass from the road and thousands will participate in it, they too will be at risk if the road is not repaired," said Raja.
He added that the issue was taken up in recent review meetings chaired by police commissioner Ravinder Singal. "The CP warned that if any mishap happens because of bad road conditions, then NHAI officials would be booked. He also asked NMC and MSEDCL officials to repair the street lights which are currently non-functional," Raja stated.
Adding to the concern, a local resident said that traffic congestion between Bhande Plot Square and Dighori has become a daily ordeal. "Every day minor accidents are being reported on the road and traffic jams have become common since the flyover work started. People regularly using the road have become frustrated," the local said.
When contacted, an NHAI official confirmed that repair works will be undertaken before the Urs begins, offering some hope to the thousands preparing to attend the religious event.

Japanese businessman leaves empire behind to become Shiva devotee in Uttarakhand: ‘That dream changed everything'

A 41-year-old Japanese man has traded his business empire for a life of spiritual pursuit in India. Hoshi Takayuki, now known as Bala Kumbha Gurumuni, was once the owner of a successful chain of beauty product stores in Tokyo. Today, he is a saffron-clad Shiva devotee, walking barefoot on a pilgrimage through Uttarakhand. Accompanied by 20 Japanese followers, Mr Takayuki was recently spotted participating in the Kanwar Yatra, carrying holy Ganga water. He also organised a two-day food camp for fellow kanwariyas in Dehradun, offering meals as part of his spiritual service. According to a report in The Times of India, Mr Takayuki's spiritual journey began nearly 20 years ago during a visit to Tamil Nadu, where he encountered Nadi astrology, an ancient Siddha practice involving palm-leaf manuscripts. The reading reportedly revealed that he had lived a past life in the Himalayas and was destined to follow a path rooted in Hindu spirituality. The turning point, however, came in a vivid dream. 'I saw myself in Uttarakhand in a past life. That dream changed everything,' he told TOI. Following this experience, Mr Takayuki gave up his business and adopted a new spiritual identity. He converted his Tokyo home into a Shiva temple and built another shrine soon after. In July, he returned to India to join the Kanwar Yatra. His friend Ramesh Sundriyal, an Indian-origin resident of Japan, shared that Mr Takayuki has also purchased 35 acres of land in Puducherry, where he plans to build a major Shiva temple. An ashram in Uttarakhand is also on the cards. 'I feel deeply attached to Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. I believe I spent my past life here and am still searching for my village in the hills,' Mr Takayuki said.

Full Kalyani E-way run likely before puja

Kolkata: The much-awaited elevated corridor, connecting Belgharia Expressway with Kalyani Expressway, is slated for opening before Durga Puja. The 1.3-km flyover will ensure seamless connectivity between Kolkata and north Bengal via the upgraded 44.2km Kalyani Expressway. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "This Durga Puja, people of Bengal will receive a big gift in the form of a full-length, signal-free Kalyani Expressway," Bidhan Biswas, chairman of North Dum Dum Municipality, told TOI. According to officials of the public works department (PWD), the expressway— one of the state's largest projects in recent times being executed at Rs 2,500 crore — is nearing completion, with the work being scheduled to wrap up by Aug-end. Once operational, the travel time between Kolkata and Kalyani AIIMS (approximately 43 km) is expected to drop to just 45 minutes from two-and-a-half hours at present. "The expressway also serves as a crucial bypass, steering clear of congestion-prone areas, like Barasat. It offers quicker access to the airport from districts, such as Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly and Burdwan," the official said. The Kalyani Expressway, featuring four to six lanes and toll booths, will now integrate with the 16-km Belgharia Expressway, a high-speed corridor connecting Dakshineswar with the airport. The expressway's revamped infrastructure includes elevated corridors and six-lane underpasses at major intersections, eliminating traffic signals along the entire stretch from Belgharia to Baro Jagulia via Kampa More near Kanchrapara. A senior engineer from PWD said a 3.8-km stretch between the Belgharia and Kalyani Expressway was already complete. Kalyani and Belgharia expressways meet at a point between Mathkal and Sukantapally in North Dum Dum, known locally as the "Zero Point". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now To avoid congestion at this junction, the state govt is constructing a 1.3-km elevated corridor above the Zero Point crossing, allowing uninterrupted flow of both Dakshineswar- and airport-bound traffic. The flyover is expected to descend near the Nimta crossing in North Dum Dum.

Opening of Heerapura bus terminal may be delayed by a month

1 2 Jaipur: Although the state govt plans to start operations from the Heerapura bus terminal in Aug, it seems it will take at least another month to make this terminal operational. On Tuesday, when Team TOI visited the bus terminal, it was found that the Rajasthan State Bus Terminal Development Authority (RSBTDA) is yet to construct roads inside the terminal leading to the bus bays and parking bays from the exit and entry gates. However, work on the bus shed inside the terminal is almost complete, as workers were constructing the last few of the 16-odd bus bays and were erecting the benches and the ticket counters. RSBTDA officials said there were several decisions by the state govt centring on this bus terminal in the last year. Finally, the govt asked the authority to complete the remaining jobs in early April. "The JDA is doing the construction work. We are sorting a few issues with the National Highways Development Authroity of India (NHAI), while the RTO is in talks with the operators. The works are going on at full pace. We are trying to make this terminal ready for operations as soon as possible," stated Shubhra Singh, the chairperson of RSBTDC. Although there is sufficient space for the long-distance buses to take a U-turn from the underpass of the Kamla Nehru Nagar flyover and reach this bus terminal, locals are apprehensive about a bottleneck on the service lane. The vehicles for last-mile connectivity, including JCTSL and minibuses, will have to travel at least five to six kilometre through these lanes to reach the underpass of the Bhankrota flyover. "There is a cut right within 100 metres from the exit gate of the bus terminal for buses to climb the Ajmer-bound flank of the Ajmer Expressway But vehicles travelling towards Jaipur from this terminal must take a U-turn from the underpass of the next Bhankrota flyover. There's no cut on the highway before the Bhankrota flyover. It means these vehicles would travel to the underpass of the Bhankrota flyover through the already congested side lane," said Amit Mishra, a local resident. NHAI said, the state govt would decide on how the traffic would flow in and out of this terminal. "There are three different bays, each of four lanes, to allow traffic movement in these three directions through the underpass of the newly constructed Bhankrota flyover. The rest remains on the traffic and transport department, whether they want to allow Jaipur-bound traffic through the service lanes or through the main flank (Ajmer-bound) of the Expressway," a NHAI official added.
