
Award-winning research advances breast cancer image classification
MUSCAT: Among the standout projects at the 11th National Research Award organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI), the study titled 'Feed-forward networks using logistic regression and support vector machine for whole-slide breast cancer histopathology image classification' by Dr ArunaDevi Karuppasamy, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computing Sciences, Gulf College, received top honours in the Information and Communication Technologies field (PhD category).
Dr ArunaDevi's research addresses the critical challenge of histopathology image classification, essential for breast cancer diagnosis. While traditional methods rely on hand-crafted features, her study explores feed-forward approaches, proposing Convolutional Logistic Regression (CLR) and Convolutional Support Vector Machine (CSVM-H) networks.

These methods leverage predefined or externally learned filters, overcoming limitations of back-propagation techniques such as vanishing gradients and heavy data requirements.
Experiments showed that CLR and CSVM-H achieved superior accuracy and faster training times on small datasets from Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) and BreaKHis, outperforming traditional models like VggNet-16 and ResNet-50. Both models demonstrated high Area Under Curve (AUC) scores (0.83 and 0.84 on the SQUH dataset), highlighting their efficiency for small, labelled datasets with limited computational resources.

Omani inventors win three medals at ITEX in Malaysia
Muscat – Oman won one silver and two gold medals at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2025) held in Kuala Lumpur that concluded on May 31. Badr bin Salim al Muqbali received a gold medal for his invention – a remote controlled device to operate a ring-bonding unit. Earlier, he won the Best Innovator Award presented by the Bunyan Foundation in Saudi Arabia. The second gold for Oman was claimed by Malak bint Khalifa al Harthi for her project involving a Portland cement composite reinforced with carbon nanoplates, proposed for use as dental filling. The silver medal was won by Yusra bint Yousef al Ghadani for her project titled 'Squid ink water filter'. Amna bint Ali al Siyabi, Research and Innovation Capacity Building Specialist at Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, described ITEX is a major international platform that allows young inventors to develop their ideas, connect with peers worldwide, and present their innovations to investors across sectors including medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, construction and energy. According to al Amna, the ministry received 59 applications for participation in ITEX this year. Twenty projects were shortlisted and assessed by a specialised jury, with the top three chosen to represent Oman based on creativity, feasibility and potential global impact. ITEX is held annually and brings together inventors, startups, investors and entrepreneurs from across Asia and Europe. This year's event featured over 1,000 inventions from more than 20 countries, offering opportunities for funding and industry exposure.

Agreement with Royal College of Surgeons
The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation has signed a cooperation agreement in the field of higher education and scholarships with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland — Bahrain Royal Medical University in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The agreement was signed by Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and Professor Sameer al Atoum, President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland — Bahrain Royal Medical University. The signing of the agreement comes as a result of the relationship between the ministry and the college; and the desire of both parties to enhance and develop cooperation in the field of higher education. According to the agreement, the ministry will send a number of students to study in the Medical Commencement Programme (MCP) or the Bachelor of Medicine programme. The ministry will provide the college with a list of students selected for study at the beginning of each academic year. — ONA

5 projects from Oman qualify for London International Youth Science Forum
Muscat – The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation announced the names of the qualifiers for the 66th London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF), scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 6 in London, United Kingdom. Out of 430 research projects submitted in various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, 30 met the competition's eligibility criteria. Following a rigorous evaluation, the top five projects were selected to represent Oman at LIYSF 2025. Among the selected researchers is Hala al Zaabi, whose project focuses on the dual treatment of waste leachate using date seed tannins and advanced oxidation technology. Al Muntasir al Maamari qualified with a project on AI-supported green hydrogen production from mesquite trees and industrial waste. Saif al Hashar's project, titled Anfay , is an AI-powered plastic classification tool. Zainab al Maharbi qualified with Nadeem , a platform designed to support children with autism and their parents. Dima al Maawali's project introduces Oman's first AI-powered digital platform to identify damaged water pipes. The selected projects were evaluated by a specialised panel comprising experts from Sultan Qaboos University, the University of Buraimi, the Global College of Engineering and Technology, and the Military Technological College. Abeer al Jabri, Research Capacity Building Specialist at the ministry, noted that LIYSF has empowered more than 22,000 students globally since its inception in 1959. Oman's participation has steadily grown over the years, with 817 applicants since 2016, 123 shortlisted projects, and 43 final representatives. The forum aims to foster international scientific collaboration, expose young researchers to cutting-edge advancements, and develop innovation skills through direct engagement with global experts.
