Red Sox lineup: Two top hitters sitting Wednesday as Boston looks to avoid Philly sweep
Against Phillies lefty Jesús Luzardo, both third baseman Alex Bregman and outfielder Roman Anthony are out of the lineup for the series finale at Citizens Bank Park. Bregman, as expected, isn't starting as part of his slow build-up after returning early from a quad strain. Anthony, who struck out four times in back-to-back games to start the series, is the odd man out of the crowded outfield picture. The rookie has played all five of Boston's game since the All-Star break.
'It's more about Chicago,' said manager Alex Cora. 'He played a little bit banged up. Taking advantage of today and tomorrow makes sense.'
Jarren Duran is back in the lineup in center field after sitting Tuesday and Wilyer Abreu is the right fielder, getting a rare start against a southpaw. Masataka Yoshida is the designated hitter for the second straight game and Marcelo Mayer is at third base in place of Bregman.
Since returning from the injured list on July 11, Bregman has played two out of every three games. Sitting him Wednesday allows a long period of rest with the team off Thursday. The All-Star, who is still not at 100% running because of the injury, has hit .231 with a .615 OPS in 26 plate appearances since coming back.
'He has been good,' said Cora. 'Yesterday, I asked (head athletic trainer) Brandon (Henry) about today. He's like, 'We'll stay with the plan.' He won't start today, or he won't play, then he'll be ready for Friday. From Friday on, he'll be full-go.'
The Red Sox will look to avoid a 1-5 road trip to start the second half behind Lucas Giolito, who took the loss in his last outing at Wrigley Field on Friday but has a 5-1 record and 1.43 ERA in 44 innings over seven starts dating back to June 10.
First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. ET and the game will air nationally on ESPN.

WNBA-leading Lynx acquire DiJonai Carrington from Wings for 2 players and a draft pick
WNBA-leading Minnesota acquired DiJonai Carrington in a trade Sunday from the Dallas Wings for Diamond Miller, Karlie Samuelson and the Lynx's second-round pick in 2027. Carrington averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 20 games for the Wings, who acquired her from Connecticut in February as part of a four-team trade. This is the fifth WNBA season for the 5-foot-11 guard/forward. Miller, the No. 2 overall pick by the Lynx in the draft two years ago, is averaging 4.1 points a game this season. Since scoring 12.1 points a game as a rookie in 2023, the 6-3 forward from Maryland has averaged only 3.5 points in 47 games the past two seasons. Samuelson hasn't played since June 29 because of surgery on her left foot after playing only 16 games for the Lynx, who got the 6-foot guard from Washington in April. She played four games for Dallas in 2019. The Wings waived 6-7 center Teaira McCowan, a seven-year WNBA veteran, to make room on the roster for the additions. McCowan averaged 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 17 games this season. Minnesota is 24-5 this season. The Wings, with No. 1 overall draft pick Paige Bueckers, have lost eight of their last 10 games and are 8-21. ___ AP WNBA: The Associated Press

Lachlan Turner sweeps Women's division for first Loretta Lynn's title
Altus Motorsports BLU CRU Yamaha's Lachlan Turner completed her sweep of the Women's division with a Moto 3 victory and secured the Loretta Lynn's Amateur National title in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, but this time around, she had a different challenger in second in Mayla Herrick. Turner had unfinished business in the Loretta's. As the defending Women's Pro Motocross (WMX) champion, no one questioned her skill; however, she had failed to secure a divisional championship in the biggest event of amateur racing. Turner won each moto with dominant gaps over second place. Her victory over Herrick was 41.734 seconds as the eventual runner-up finisher worked her way through a determined field. Turner's overall strength was highlighted by a 19th-place finish earlier in the day in the 250 B Limited class that is dominated by male riders. Lachlan Turner sweeps first two races in Women's Loretta Lynn's division with Moto 2 win Lachlan Turner was five seconds faster than the competition on multiple laps of Moto 2. Dan Beaver , Herrick had a modest start in fifth. It took three laps to get into podium contention and another couple of trips around the circuit to move around Kyleigh Stallings into second. The lead was out of the question by that point, with Turner more than 30 seconds ahead, but Herrick matched the leader's pace during the next three laps before losing significant ground on the final lap. Herrick's second-place finish on Saturday, combined with fourth-place results in the first two motos, placed her third overall in the divisional standings by a tiebreaker over Jordan Jarvis. Stallings swept the podium with second-place finishes in Motos 1 and 2, plus her third-place finish on Saturday. For half of Moto 3, it appeared she might finish second for the third time, and rode in that position until Lap 5. Landen Gordon ends Enzo Temmerman's streak with Open Pro Sport Moto 2 win Enzo Temmerman struggled at the start of the moto and was unable to make up the distance on his teammate. Dan Beaver , Stallings and Turner will leave Tennessee and head to Indiana for the resumption of the WMX Championship next weekend. Fourth-place finisher Jarvis will join them at Ironman Raceway. She came up one position short of also sweeping the podium. Five was the operative number for Mila Baltyk, who finished fifth in Moto1, Moto 3, and in the overall standings. Baltyk's other finish during the week was sixth in Moto 2. Enzo Temmerman sweeps Loretta Lynn's 250 Pro Sport, secures title Enzo Temmerman overcame a poor start in 250 Pro Sport Moto 3 and made his way to the lead. Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski placed on IL with tibia contusion
Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a left tibia contusion. The team announced Sunday that Misiorowski's designation was retroactive to July 31, a few days after the All-Star right-hander took a line shot to the shin in the first inning against the Chicago Cubs. Misiorowski (4-1, 2.70 ERA) struggled a bit to close the inning, but settled down and retired 10 consecutive batters while throwing 40 pitches over the next three. Misiorowski told reporters before his scheduled start Sunday against the Washington Nationals that he anticipates missing about two starts and being ready to go after the 15 days. Right-hander Logan Henderson was recalled from Triple-A Nashville and expected to start in his place against the Nationals. ___ AP MLB:
