Tupelo Memorial Day ceremony set for Monday morning
TUPELO — Tupelo officials will honor those who died serving in the United States Armed Forces as part of the federal Memorial Day holiday Monday.
The city of Tupelo will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on Monday at 9 a.m.
This year's program includes remarks from Mayor Todd Jordan, with U.S. Rep Trent Kelly, who served 39 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard as a combat engineer, as the key speaker.
While Veterans Day, which takes place in the fall, is reserved for all service members, Memorial Day honors those who died while in service of the country.
Kelly was mobilized for Desert Storm in 1990 and also served with the 155th Brigade as operations officer of the 150th Engineer Battalion in Iraq. He earned the rank of major general before his retirement in 2025 and earned multiple awards, including two Bronze Stars, the Combat Action Badge, the Bronze, Silver, and Gold de Fleury medals, among others.
In the event of rain, the ceremony will move from its traditional place at the park square to inside the Tupelo Aquatic Center, also on the park grounds. The ceremony is open to the public and free to attend.
The national anthem will be performed by Hope Nanney and Camren Wages, 'Amazing Grace' will be performed by Owen McCulloch, and taps will be conducted by Sgt. Derrick Usher.

Watch: Funeral services for Morrow County deputy fatally shot on Memorial Day
GALION, Ohio (WCMH) – A private ceremony at Marion Cemetery will conclude a week's worth of remembrance for a Morrow County deputy who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Deputy Daniel 'Weston' Sherrer will be laid to rest Wednesday in Marion. A public service to honor and celebrate Sherrer is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Northmor High School near Galion, with former sheriff and current pastor Steve Brenneman officiating. With permission from the family, NBC4 will livestream the funeral service. You can watch it in the video player above. Morrow County comes together to remember fallen deputy After the service, the procession route will proceed south from Northmor High School to U.S. 42, where it will head westbound past the Morrow County Sheriff's Office where Sherrer worked and through the center of Mount Gilead, the county seat. From there, it will proceed west on State Route 95 to Marion. The Sheriff's Office said its parking lot will be open to anyone would would like to view the procession and pay respects. Of those in attendance who spoke during the service was Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton, and Franklin County Deputy Sheriff Michael Brewer. On Memorial Day, Sherrer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic situation at a home on County Road 26 south of Marengo. Sherrer's body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office before a police escort brought him back to Mount Gilead last Wednesday during a 120-mile procession. Flags around Ohio have been flying at half staff under an order from Gov. Mike DeWine that will expire at sunset Wednesday. Sherrer became a Morrow County deputy in May 2021. The 2012 graduate of St. Charles Preparatory in Columbus was engaged to be married and is survived by his parents and other relatives. Brian Wilson, 53, has been charged in Sherrer's death. It's the longest-running African American holiday, and it became a federal holiday a few years ago. Here's what to know about the holiday. Juneteenth will be marked on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Unlike other federal holidays, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving, that are observed on a specific day of the week, Juneteenth is celebrated on the actual day. Juneteenth commemorates the day — June 19, 1865 — when federal soldiers arrived in Galveston to take control of Texas and ensure the slaves were freed per the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the History Channel. Juneteenth — short for June nineteenth — marks the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. But its effect was limited, according to the National Archives. It only applied to states that seceded during the Civil War, leaving slavery intact for slave states that stayed with the Union. It also could not be enforced until Confederate states were under Union control, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Therefore, it took until June 19, 1865, for slaves in Texas to be freed. Slavery in America was formally abolished with the 13th Amendment, which was ratified Dec. 6, 1865. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. President Joe Biden signed legislation on June 17, 2021, according to USA TODAY, after Congress passed The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act that same month. Juneteenth began rising to prominence in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd, a Black man, sparked protests across the country against police brutality, USA TODAY reports. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., first introduced the Juneteenth bill in 2020 following the killings of Floyd and Breonna Taylor of Louisville, Kentucky. His initial attempt to pass the bill was unsuccessful. No. As a federal holiday, the U.S. Postal Service is closed that day, and there will be no mail delivered. FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available on June 19, according to the company's website. FedEx Office locations will also be open, USA TODAY is reporting.
