Tupelo Memorial Day ceremony set for Monday morning
TUPELO — Tupelo officials will honor those who died serving in the United States Armed Forces as part of the federal Memorial Day holiday Monday. The city of Tupelo will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on Monday at 9 a.m. This year's program includes remarks from Mayor Todd Jordan, with U.S. Rep Trent Kelly, who served 39 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard as a combat engineer, as the key speaker. While Veterans Day, which takes place in the fall, is reserved for all service members, Memorial Day honors those who died while in service of the country. Kelly was mobilized for Desert Storm in 1990 and also served with the 155th Brigade as operations officer of the 150th Engineer Battalion in Iraq. He earned the rank of major general before his retirement in 2025 and earned multiple awards, including two Bronze Stars, the Combat Action Badge, the Bronze, Silver, and Gold de Fleury medals, among others. In the event of rain, the ceremony will move from its traditional place at the park square to inside the Tupelo Aquatic Center, also on the park grounds. The ceremony is open to the public and free to attend. The national anthem will be performed by Hope Nanney and Camren Wages, 'Amazing Grace' will be performed by Owen McCulloch, and taps will be conducted by Sgt. Derrick Usher.

TUPELO — Friday night saw the culmination of months of effort by city officials and contractors with the opening of The Depot in Downtown Tupelo. The city held a ribbon-cutting in conjunction with the first day of the Blue Suede Cruise, making an event of the evening that included music, food and speeches. Mayor Todd Jordan opened the ceremony with a history of the project from its conceptualization to construction. 'It's a great addition to downtown,' he said, noting that the project will go a long way in alleviating stress on downtown when events take place that typically shut the streets down. 'I'm proud of it. I hope you're proud of it.' The building will be multi-purpose, with the city envisioning The Depot as an event space for all manner of festivities. It is equipped with a stage, electricity and restrooms. djr-2025-05-03-news-depot-arp1 Tupelo Mayor Todd Jordan cuts the ribbon for The Depot during a grand opening ceremony on May 2, 2025, in Tupelo, Miss. Not only is Blue Suede Cruise happening alongside the $2.2 million venue's opening, but The Depot opened just in time for the farmers market season to begin on May 17. The market, which will move to The Depot, is held each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon from May to October. Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association Director Lucia Randle said she was glad the project is finally complete, noting The Depot is a facility she hopes everyone in the city, both residents and visitors alike, can enjoy. 'It's complete elation, such satisfaction in a job well done by so many people,' she said. '(I can) hardly believe I'm standing in this gorgeous facility. It has been so fun to watch it through the months as it came up from the ground.' She said The Depot is based upon the downtown area's original train depot, with an architectural design that evokes its origin, including a replica of the dome structure of the original train depot's building. Construction contractors Master Craft Builders handled the project's dirt work and Tek 1 Studio oversaw the architectural design. Greg Pirkle of Phelps Dunbar, which has an office next door to the new facility, said he was proud to see the project complete, adding that he is also proud the city revitalized the area that once was a deteriorating parking lot downtown. djr-2025-05-03-news-depot-arp4 Members of the Tupelo Ballet perform a patriotic dance during the grand opening and ribbon cutting for The Depot in Downtown Tupelo. 'We are very excited to see The Depot open,' Pirkle said. 'It is good for us, and it is good for the area.'

Voter registration for municipal primaries ends Saturday
TUPELO — The window to register to vote in Tupelo's municipal primaries is rapidly closing. Saturday will be the final day for residents within city limits to register to vote in time for the April 1 primary elections. Those interested can go to City Hall on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on April 1. The primary elections are paramount in that many of the races will be decided through them, including the mayoral race between Republicans Rob Chambers and incumbent Todd Jordan. Jordan is looking to secure a second term as the city of Tupelo's top elected official. Ward 2 and Ward 4 will also be decided in the primary elections. Ward 1 Councilman Chad Mims and Ward 6 Councilwoman Janet Gaston both are unopposed, securing their seats for a second term. Republican Lucas Berryhill hopes to unseat Republican incumbent Ward 2 Councilman Lynn Bryan, and in Ward 4, a host of Democrat challengers are vying to take the position away from long-time Democrat Nettie Davis, including Alexandra Mercedes Copeland, Brenda DePriest and Sarita Grayson Witherspoon. Ward 7 will also be decided in the upcoming primary as former councilmember Willie Jennings, D, hopes to return to the council, challenging Democrat incumbent Rosie Jones, who defeated him in the last election cycle. While not decided in the primary, Ward 5 has a host of Republicans vying for the seat, which is currently occupied by Buddy Palmer, who isn't seeking reelection. Candidates include Steven. J. Coon, Mike Horton and Bentley Nolan. The winner of the primary will face Democrat candidate Candria Lewis in the June general election. If there are no definitive victors in primary races with more than two candidates, a runoff election will be triggered. Runoffs are scheduled for April 22. June 3's general election will be the final decision for Ward 3 alongside Ward 5. Incumbent Republican Travis Beard will face Democrat Shirley Hendrix. With no third-party candidates running in the election, a runoff won't be necessary. Meanwhile, absentee voting for the primary has already begun and will continue through March 29. Voters who do not register in time to take part in the primary can still vote in the general election if they register before May 5.
