Tripura govt gives jobs to kin of 18 people killed in political violence before 2018
The minister said 39 petitions were submitted to the scrutiny committee, and 18 people were offered jobs in various departments. Nath is the chairman of the scrutiny committee, which also comprises the law secretary, secretary of information and cultural affairs, an inspector general of police, and the additional secretary of the home department.
'Another meeting of the committee was held on June 19. We got eight more petitions, and five of the names were recommended. We are reviewing the remaining petitions,' the minister told reporters at the Civil Secretariat.
'We give due respect to democracy. We feel that supporting the family members of those who were killed in political violence is our moral duty. Our government has not shown any discrimination on the basis of political affiliations in this case,' he said.
The BJP-led coalition government first came to power in the state in 2018, unseating the erstwhile CPI(M)-led Left Front government which had ruled the state for 25 consecutive years.
Criticising the previous government, Nath said, 'Several political murders happened before 2018 during the earlier government's tenure. Murders and political violence are not healthy for democracy. If it happens, it is a failure and embarrassment for shame for the government'.
He, however, could not give an exact figure of the political murders that purportedly occurred prior to 2018. 'Petitions received are of cases from different years like 1983, 1987, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998,1981, 2015, 2016, 2017…,' he said.
Nath added that those who wish to apply under the scheme should collect forms from the sub-divisional magistrates' offices. These applications will be assessed by the committee based on inputs shared by district magistrates and superintendents of police. 'If the names are approved by the committee, it will be forwarded to the Finance Department, and based on vacancies in different departments, they will be given jobs,' he added.

Lok Sabha passes Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill by voice vote
New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) The Lok Sabha today passed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025 by voice vote. The Bill aims to ensure the benefits of the mining sector reach the common people, introduce transparency in the allocation of mines and promote development in the sector. While presenting the bill in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, said the proposed amendments aim to boost employment opportunities and ensure that tribals and those linked to the mining sector directly benefit from the reforms. He pointed out that prior to the Modi government, mine allocations were done with minimal oversight, allowing mafia groups to dominate the sector. This led to the Supreme Court cancelling 104 mine allocations due to corruption. He emphasised that the scenario has now significantly improved. Reddy also mentioned that the mining sector was once controlled by politically influential individuals and marred by exploitation. In contrast, he said, the current environment fosters development, with common citizens now seeing real benefits. Taking a dig at the Opposition members who were protesting the bill, he said that their opposition stems from a lack of faith in the people. Earlier, during the debate, BJP MP Malavika Devi highlighted that mine allocations were previously handled in an unethical manner, but reforms have changed that. She said the bill would help uplift the poor and improve the nation's global standing by ensuring transparency in mining. BJP's Brijmohan Agrawal called the legislation a key step towards the development of tribal regions, stating that it would benefit marginalized communities. CM Gurumoorthy Maddila of the YSR Congress and G Lakshminarayan from the Telugu Desam Party also took part in the discussion. Giani Harpreet in saddle, rebel Akali faction faces Tarn Taran, SGPC challenge
Amritsar: With Giani Harpreet Singh in the saddle, the latest rebel faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will face two challenges in the foreseeable future— the Tarn Taran assembly seat bypoll and elections to the cash-rich Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. The Sukhbir Singh Badal-led SAD has already announced Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa as its candidate from Tarn Taran. With this, Badal is hoping to have a head start over others in the electoral contest. However, the rebel group could divide Panthic votes in the bypoll, especially due to Giani Harpreet Singh's background as a former jathedar of Akal Takht. "The division of votes could pose a serious challenge to the Badal-led SAD," said Ravinder Singh, an Amritsar resident who follows Panthic politics closely. "The Harpreet Singh-led faction could benefit from its stronger standing in religious circles." The rebel SAD faction is yet to announce if it will contest the byelection. When contacted, former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur, who is a key figure in the rebel Akali camp, said, "The party president will take the final decision." Echoing this, rebel Akali delegate Jasbir Ghumman said the faction president was yet to form athe core committee and executive body. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo "Only then will these decisions be made," said Ghumman. Sikh scholar Ravinder Singh said SGPC elections will be the real litmus test for the breakaway faction. The Union home ministry recently chose not to extend the term of Justice S S Saron (retd), who was serving as the chief commissioner for Gurdwara elections. The delay in announcing SGPC elections is seen by many as a strategic move, especially in the wake of the rising influence of radical Sikh figures like Amritpal Singh. "After Amritpal's elevation, there was concern that Khalistani-leaning elements might gain control of SGPC," he said. Ravinder Singh added the central govt may be waiting to assess the influence of the rebel faction in Punjab's rural belt. "A clearer picture may prompt Centre to schedule SGPC elections before the 2027 assembly polls," Ravinder said. Ghuman added the rebel group will set up its head office in Amritsar, with a sub-office in Chandigarh. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
