Independence Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it's a day when India swells with pride, reflection, and unity. Across towns and cities, from crowded streets to quiet homes, the spirit of freedom comes alive in vibrant hues of the tri‑colour and heartfelt patriotic songs. It's a time when the old and new moments come together, in order to honour those who led the struggle for independence and to embrace the goals that guide India forward. India is set to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on Friday, 15 August 2025, commemorating freedom from colonial rule in 1947. As always, the most awaited part of the day is the Prime Minister hoisting the national flag at Delhi's historic Red Fort, followed by his address to the nation, and this year will be special, being Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 12th consecutive address, and his first since securing a third term in office. The ceremony starts early, with an official speech at around 7:30 am. Events usually begin with a heartfelt greeting from dignitaries, a 21-gun salute, and the stirring strains of 'Jana Gana Mana', often accompanied by a floral shower from circling Indian Air Force helicopters. After hoisting the flag, the Prime Minister speaks about India's progress, its challenges, and future direction, reinforcing the spirit of unity and national pride. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Where to watch the ceremony live On television, people can watch the ceremony live on Doordarshan. Sports Bill will end stagnation; bring in transparency: PT Usha in Rajya Sabha

PT Usha (Image credit: Facebook) NEW DELHI: Indian Olympic Association President P T Usha, who is also a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, on Tuesday offered her unequivocal support to the National Sports Governance Bill, saying that it will end decades of "stagnant status quo" to usher in "transparency, and accountability" in country's sports administration. During the discussion on the bill, that was passed by Lok Sabha on Monday, Usha lauded its provisions including the setting up of a National Sports Board (NSB), which will have overriding powers to recognise sports federations (NSFs). Affiliation to the NSB would be mandatory for access to central funds. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The bill also proposes the National Sports Tribunal to deal with sports disputes and the National Sports Election Panel to oversee NSF polls. "Today is a day of immense personal and national significance. I have long awaited this moment," Usha, who sat alongside another nominated member Sudha Murthy, said in her address to the House. She had opposed the bill last year, describing it as government interference and warned that India might end up copping a ban from the International Olympic Committee. However, she has since revised her views after extensive consultations with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Private AI language tutors? That day my heart broke... there was no comprehensive sports law to support the dreams that we carried in our hearts. "Since then four decades passed, there was nothing done to address the stagnant status the hope has transformed into action and legislation. It is a visionary and long overdue bill," she said. "This bill will usher in transparency, accountability, and gender parity. It will empower athletes and build confidence among sponsors and federations. It is about justice and fair-play," she added. Usha said the bill's thrust on creating a structured administrative set-up will be helpful for India's 2036 Olympics bid. "This legislation comes at a time when India is dreaming big, dreaming for its rightful share in global sporting fraternity by hosting the 2036 Olympics. For Bharat, it is not just a bill, it is a clarion call for action," she said. "This bill is a critical pillar of a grand vision. Let us see this as a moral promise, a promise that athletes will no longer be let down by an apathetic system. As someone who ran bare foot on clay tracks...I can say that this bill will change lives," she said. She also backed the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) bill which reasserts National Anti-Doping Agency's operation independence, while setting up a National Anti-Doping Board to advise on procedural issues. "It is through such effective legislation that we can bring a new culture of clean sports. This bill will illuminate the athletes' path with clarity," Usha said. Lucknow Metro expansion: Cabinet clears Phase-1B; Rs 5,801 crore project with 12 stations to ease congestion

AI image The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project in Uttar Pradesh. The new corridor will stretch 11.165 km and include 12 stations, seven underground and five elevated. With its completion, Lucknow will have a total operational metro network of 34 km. Phase-1B will extend metro services to some of the oldest and most crowded parts of the city, areas that currently lack modern transport facilities. The route will link key commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk, as well as major healthcare centres like King George's Medical University. It will also connect prominent tourist attractions including Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza, along with popular food destinations that reflect Lucknow's culinary heritage. Officials said the Rs 5,801 crore project is expected to ease traffic congestion on heavily used roads in Old Lucknow, reducing travel times and improving road safety. The metro expansion will also cut carbon emissions by offering an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuel-based transport. Improved connectivity to the airport, railway stations and bus depots is expected to boost productivity, stimulate local businesses, and attract new investment to previously less accessible areas. The project is also expected to promote social inclusion by providing affordable and reliable transport to people from different socio-economic backgrounds, reducing travel disparities and improving access to essential services. Once operational, Phase-1B is set to transform urban mobility in Lucknow, supporting economic growth, tourism, and environmental sustainability while enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors.
