Bharat bandh tomorrow: Are schools, banks closed on July 9? All you need to know
'The Bharat bandh will be disrupting services across the country. Banking, postal, coal mining, factories, state transport services will be affected due to the strike,' Harbhajan Singh Sidhu from Hind Mazdoor Sabha was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Are banks closed tomorrow?
According to a PTI report, an association of bank employees said the banking sector will join Wednesday's Bharat bandh. The Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association, affiliated to the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), further stated that the insurance sector will also join the strike.
Banking services are likely to be disturbed across the nation, although no banking holiday has been announced yet.
Will schools and colleges remain closed on Bharat bandh?
Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, have not been notified of a holiday due to the Bharat bandh call and are expected to function uninterruptedly.
Will there be power disruptions amid the strike?
According to the PTI report, electricity supply in the country may also get affected on July 9 as over 27 lakh power workers will be participating in the Bharat bandh.
Will railways be operational?
There has been no official announcement about a nationwide railway strike due to the Bharat bandh yet.
Commuters may expect delays in train services or disruptions due to the protests.
Why have workers call Bharat Bandh tomorrow?
The forum of 10 central trade unions called the nationwide strike, criticising the government for not conducting the annual labour conference for the last 10 years, and alleging that the economic policies are resulting in more unemployment, rising prices of essential commodities, and depression in wages.
The forum also alleged that the government departments are damaging to the growth of the country where 65 per cent of the population is below the age of 35 years and the number of unemployed individuals is maximum among those in the age group of 20 to 25 years.

In a statement, the firm said it 'continues to play its pivotal role in defence indigenisation by supplying critical-grade steel for INS Ajay, launched by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) and INS Nistar, commissioned by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) during July, 2025". SAIL supplied the entire quantity of special DMR grade steel plates for INS Ajay ensuring structural integrity and stealth performance. INS Ajay is the eighth and final vessel in the indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series constructed by GRSE. The company also supplied the entire quantity of special grade plates for the newly commissioned INS Nistar, India's first indigenously designed and built diving support vessel (DSV). INS Nistar, delivered by HSL, is poised to play a vital role in submarine rescue operations, deep-sea diving, and sustained patrolling. 'SAIL's commitment to powering India's naval strength underscores its strategic support to national defence goals and its integral role in building an Atmanirbhar Bharat. ACL Airshop, IndiGo in pact for pallet management, logistics services
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Mumbai, Aug 4 (PTI) ULD services and cargo control product package services provider ACL Airshop on Monday announced a strategic pact with domestic carrier IndiGo for standardised pallet management and logistics services. The agreement covers both cargo and growing passenger operations, marking ACL Airshop's official expansion into the Indian subcontinent, a statement said. Ultra load device (ULD), which could be either an aircraft container or a combination of an aircraft pallet and an aircraft pallet net, is used for grouping and restraining cargo, mail and baggage for air transport. The partnership will involve the supply and management of the IndiGo ULD fleet to meet their current and future operations. It also includes maintenance and repair services, access to the ACL Airshop network and short-term fleet, as well as bringing next-generation tracking technology to the IndiGo ULD fleet, the statement said. 'The strategic partnership not only reinforces our position as a global ULD management services leader but also allows us to support IndiGo wherever their growth journey takes them," ACL Airshop CEO Bernhard Kindelbacher said. 'As our requirement for ULDs grows, we have partnered with ACL Airshop. They could quickly and efficiently respond to IndiGo's requirements and were fully operational in a short span of just two months," said Mark Sutch, Chief Commercial Officer for cargo at IndiGo. Five ex-Punjab cops sentenced to life imprisonment in 1993 fake encounter case
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Chandigarh, Aug 4 (PTI) A CBI court in Mohali on Monday sentenced five former police officials to rigorous life imprisonment in a 1993 fake encounter of seven persons of Tarn Taran district and described their conduct 'morally bankrupt and profoundly inhumane". The court of CBI Special Judge Baljinder Singh Sra which pronounced the verdict also imposed a fine of Rs 3.50 lakh on each of the convict. The court had found them guilty of criminal conspiracy, murder and destruction of evidence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code on August 1. The then deputy superintendent of police Bhupinderjit Singh (61), who later retired as SSP, the then assistant sub-inspector Devinder Singh (58), who retired as DSP, the then assistant sub-inspector Gulbarg Singh (72), the then Inspector Suba Singh (83) and the then ASI Raghbir Singh (63) have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life. Five other accused police officials — the then Inspector Gurdev Singh, the then sub-inspector Gian Chand, then ASI Jagir Singh and then head constables Mohinder Singh and Aroor Singh passed away during the trial. The court, in an order, said, 'Upon consideration of the rival contentions, this court is of the view that there is no doubt regarding the sheer venality and callousness with which the convicts acted, reflecting an utter disregard for human dignity and life. Their conduct was not only unlawful, it was morally bankrupt and profoundly inhumane." 'However, in view of their advanced age and the prolonged agony endured during the course of the trial over many years, this court refrains from awarding the capital punishment," it said. The court said Dr B R Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, once said, 'Rights are protected not by laws but by the social and moral conscience of society". Regrettably, this moral consciousness has yet to be fully absorbed and reflected in the institutions of governance entrusted with the protection of people's rights, said the order. The court said it can very well imagine the plight of their parents and family members who were running from pillar to post since the year 1993 to seek justice. Taking into consideration all these facts and circumstances in the light of above judgment, the fine amount awarded shall be paid as compensation to their widows and legal heirs in equal proportion, said the order. Among the seven victims, three were special police officers. As per investigation conducted by the CBI, a police team led by the then station house officer of Sirhali police station Gurdev Singh picked up SPOs Shinder Singh, Desa Singh, Sukhdev Singh and two others Balkar Singh and Daljit Singh from the residence of a government contractor on June 27, 1993. They were falsely implicated in a robbery case, as per the CBI probe. Thereafter, on July 2, 1993, the Sarhali police registered a case against Shinder Singh, Desa Singh and Sukhdev Singh, claiming that they had absconded along with government-issued weapons. On July 12, 1993, a police team led by the then DSP Bhupinderjit Singh and then Inspector Gurdev Singh claimed that while escorting one Mangal Singh to Gharka village for a recovery in the dacoity case, they were attacked by militants. In the crossfire, Mangal Singh, Desa Singh, Shinder Singh and Balkar Singh were killed. However, forensic analysis of seized weapons pointed to serious discrepancies and post-mortem examination reports also confirmed that the victims were tortured prior to their death, as per the probe. Despite being identified in records, their bodies were cremated as unclaimed, as per CBI investigation. On July 28, 1993, three more persons Sukhdev Singh, Sarabjit Singh and Harvinder Singh were killed in a staged encounter involving a police team led by the then DSP Bhupinderjit Singh, according to the CBI investigation. The case was handed over to the CBI following a Supreme Court order on December 12, 1996 in connection with mass cremation of unidentified bodies in Punjab. The CBI registered the case in 1999 based on the complaint of Narinder Kaur, the wife of Shinder Singh.
