
Mercedes-AMG SL 43 aims at young, single and rich
Mercedes-Benz' iconic three-pointed star carries a distinctive aura. But the high-performance Mercedes-AMG vehicles project a next-level presence.
In case of the Mercedes-AMG SL 43, a luxury roadster recently launched in the Korean market, the imposing convertible is an enticing choice for young, single drivers seeking an unforgettable ride.
The Korea Herald got to check out the new vehicle in a test drive that included urban, rural and highway driving.
Measuring at 4,705 millimeters in length, 1,915 mm in width and 1,365 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm, the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 has a sleek and distinctive design featuring the German automaker's signature sportiness.
The wide grille creates an imposing introduction, while the long wheelbase and bonnet, short overhangs, sharp-sloped windshield project power and performance. The circular exhaust outlets replacing the Mercedes-AMG SL 63's angular tailpipe trim and a smoother rear bumper round off the SL 43's slick image.
The interior was all about making the car as sporty as possible but with digital conveniences. The 12.3-inch cluster dashboard behind the wheel and 11.9-inch center display feels high tech, while the AMG performance steering wheel, with its one-click manual gear change, adds to the driving experience.
The racing-style seats in the front added to the sporty feel. There were back seats, but they had so little legroom they did not seem meant for humans.
Powered by the 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline turbocharged engine, the AMG SL 43 demonstrated why it is a speedster. A maximum output of 421 horsepower with a peak torque of 51 kilogram-meters, which was enough for the car to accelerate to 100 kilometers-per-hour from standstill, showcased powerful shifting.
Under comfort mode, the engine sound from the inside was somewhat quiet for a roaring vehicle with so much power. The sports mode had more than enough in the tank, as the AMG SL 43 had no trouble passing vehicles on highways. The cornering was stable and smooth even when driving along winding roads at a healthy speed.
As one of the most important features of a convertible, the soft top had to be opened and closed multiple times. The mechanism was simple with a touch on the center display to open and close it. The transition takes about 15 seconds, and can be done while driving, as long as the car is moving at 60 kph or less.
Although the weather was hot and humid, the driving experience with the open top was enjoyable with the air conditioning on full strength. Whether it may be the peculiar look of the vehicle or the fact that the top was open despite the heat, the roadster caught drew a lot of attention as it drove by.
Overall, the Mercedes-Benz SL 43 presents an enticing ride for the young and single looking for a fancy roadster. The convertible speedster is not meant for everyone, though, due to its hefty price tag starting at 155.6 million won ($112,000).

Hyundai Motor's Q2 profit hit by US auto tariffs
Korean automaker keeps yearly guidance for now, yet hints at updates based on tariff deal between Seoul and Washington Hyundai Motor Company has taken a hit from the United States' auto tariffs as the Korean automaker announced on Thursday a steep year-on-year decline in its operating profit from the second quarter. According to Hyundai Motor's conference call over its second quarter earnings, the automaker logged 48.3 trillion won ($35.4 billion) in revenue and 3.6 trillion won in operating profit in the second quarter. Although quarterly revenue increased by 7.3 percent from the same period last year, operating profit went down by 15.8 percent on year. The last time Hyundai Motor suffered a year-on-year quarterly operating profit dip of 10 percent or higher was in the third quarter of 2020. The automaker said the falling second-quarter profitability was 'partly' a result of the impacts of the 25 percent US tariffs on Korean auto imports, which took effect in April. Hyundai Motor Company's chief finance officer Lee Seung-jo noted that the company underwent a 'minus effect of 828.5 billion won' from the tariff in the second quarter, saying that it has prepared short-term and mid- to long-term action plans to cope with lingering uncertainties, particularly the ongoing levy negotiations between Seoul and Washington. 'Considering that the current tariff policies as of today remain, in the short term, we will carry out flexible incentive and price measures, cut the costs of materials and processes through efficient production and push for contingency plans within investment budgets,' said Lee during the conference call. 'For the mid- to long-term, we will closely review options to expand the local production (in the US) and respond to the market. On top of handling the tariffs, we will continue to put efforts in improving the company's fundamentals.' Lee added that the company will actively communicate with its stakeholders after August 1 — the postponement deadline for the "reciprocal" tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Korea — should there be any changes to the yearly earnings guidance once the levy talks are finally settled between the two countries. The sectoral auto tariffs have been in effect despite the delay of the "reciprocal" tariffs. Hyundai Motor set out the yearly guidance to achieve a 3 to 4 percent growth rate in annual revenue and post a 7 to 8 percent operating profit margin for 2025 in January. According to Hyundai Motor, it sold approximately 1.07 million cars globally between April and June, up 0.8 percent from the second quarter of 2024. The company pointed out that the sales of eco-friendly vehicles jumped 36.4 percent on year to 262,126 units based on the expansion of electric vehicle sales as well as the hybrid lineup in Europe. 'Due to sales increases in major markets such as (Korea,) the US and Europe, we were able to achieve qualitative growth, but our profit took a step back due to reasons such as the fallout of the US tariffs and increasing cost of global incentives and sales due to intensifying competition,' said a Hyundai Motor official.

LG Energy Solution wins German patent suit against China's Sunwoda
Ruling paves way for Europe sales ban on Sunwoda batteries LG Energy Solution has won a patent infringement lawsuit in Germany against China's Sunwoda Group, potentially banning the sale of the Chinese company's infringing electric vehicle battery cells in the region. According to Tulip Innovation — a patent management firm representing LG Energy Solution and Panasonic — on Thursday, the Munich District Court recently ruled that Sunwonda's lithium-ion prismatic batteries used in the Dacia Spring EV infringe LG Energy Solution's patent on the 'electrode assembly structure.' This technology utilizes coated separators to create an integrated electrode assembly, ensuring the durability and cohesion of stacked electrode layers, with an emphasis on improving the safety and electrical performance of EV batteries. LG Energy Solution said this technology is widely used in the prismatic battery sector, an area where Chinese companies heavily focus on developing high-performance, high-capacity batteries for electric cars and energy storage systems. Should Sunwoda choose not to appeal the rulings, the company will be immediately prohibited from selling the batteries in question, required to recall the products and forced to pay damages to LG Energy Solution through Tulip. This case marks the Korean battery-maker's third victory against Sunwoda, following two injunctions in May concerning patents related to separator SRS coating, which led to the first sales ban in the German EV market. Even if Sunwoda appeals, industry insiders view that the superior court is unlikely to rule in their favor unless there is clear evidence contradicting LG's claims. 'As it is almost impossible for Korean battery manufacturers to win a patent lawsuit in China, they tend to bring the case to countries where they sell their products,' said a source familiar with the matter on condition of anonymity. 'While Europe is known for delivering fair rulings on patent infringement compared to China, LG's victory is meaningful as it not only proves the originality of their technology but also sets a precedent, which will significantly favor LG in similar future cases.' Chinese battery-makers' illegal use of their global rivals' technological advancements is primarily driven by their aggressive expansion into Europe, the second-largest EV market, due to their oversupply crisis in the domestic market and tariff hurdles to penetrate the US. LG Energy Solution noted, 'We are taking a firm stance against the prevalent 'patent free riding' in the industry. The company is committed to pursuing legal action and issuing warnings against unauthorized patent use, while also leading a fair, competitive environment by contributing to establishing a global battery patent licensing market.' The company's strong commitment to enforcing its patent rights comes after a growing number of competitors have breached its technologies, spanning from small IT device batteries to medium and large EV cell products. Last year, LG Energy Solution's parent company, LG Chem, also filed a lawsuit in South Korea against China's Ronbay Technology for patent infringement. Ronbay is accused of using LG Chem's technologies, which include enhancing the capacity of high-nickel cathode materials for EV batteries. Founded in 1997, Sunwoda specializes in lithium-ion batteries for EVs and ESS. According to SNE Research, it ranked No. 10 globally in market share last year. The company supplies batteries to major automakers, including Geely Auto, Renault Group, Nissan and Dongfeng Motor.

HD Hyundai starts joint shipbuilding venture in US
Edison Chouest Offshore CEO visits Korean shipbuilder's R&D site, shipyards HD Hyundai has begun taking steps to build ships in the United States in partnership with Edison Chouest Offshore, the Korean shipbuilding conglomerate said Wednesday. According to the company, a delegation of more than ten key executives and engineers from ECO, including its CEO Dino Chouest, visited Korea on Tuesday to discuss detailed plans for the joint shipbuilding project with HD Hyundai. The ECO delegation visited HD Hyundai's Global R&D Center in Gyeonggi Province and the dockyards of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Mipo in Ulsan during their two-day visit. HD Hyundai said the US partners were briefed on the Korean shipbuilder's latest technologies and shipbuilding capabilities and had a chance to review the operational status of HD Hyundai-built vessels currently deployed around the world at the Digital Insight Center at the Global R&D Center. The ECO officials also took a look at how HD Hyundai developed its automated solutions and applied them in practical shipyard operations, as well as how it implemented robotic welding technologies. According to HD Hyundai, top leadership from both companies agreed to expand their partnership beyond the joint construction of ships to explore future business opportunities together. 'HD Hyundai fully supports efforts to revitalize the US shipbuilding industry,' said HD Hyundai Executive Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun. 'The joint shipbuilding project between the two companies in the US will serve as an excellent example of Korea-US cooperation in the shipbuilding sector.' The ECO delegation visited HD Hyundai's shipyards in Ulsan on Wednesday to closely examine their design and production processes, along with their dock operation and management systems. HD Hyundai said engineers from ECO will remain in Korea for another week to learn about the Korean shipbuilder's techniques and discuss project specifics. The two companies previously signed a memorandum of understanding for a strategic and comprehensive partnership in June this year, agreeing to start jointly building medium-sized container vessels at ECO's shipyard in the US by 2028. The partners also pledged to expand the scope of their cooperation beyond ships to include port cranes, which have been central to US national security concerns as it seeks to curb China's influence. HD Hyundai dispatched a team of more than ten experts to ECO's shipyard in the US last month to inspect the partner's production facilities and systems and provide consultations on enhancing productivity. ECO, which operates 18 commercial shipyards across the US, maintains a fleet of 300 offshore support vessels around the world.
