Missed chances cost Brentford against Chelsea

BBC News06-04-2025

While Chelsea had 21 shots to Brentford's nine in the goalless draw between the two sides, the Bees had the better chances and based off them, should have taken three points. In the first half, Mikkel Damgaard was through on goal six yards out, but completely missed the ball when he only had Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to beat.Keane Lewis-Potter's header from a corner also Sanchez into a good diving stop and while Chelsea's second half substitutions led to them controlling the flow of the second half, it was the Bees who had three golden chances in a five-minute flurry late on.Bryan Mbuemo exchanged a one-two with Yoane Wissa before his effort on goal was denied by Sanchez. From the resulting corner, Sepp van den Berg, who almost turned into his own net earlier in the half, headed over from close range before Wissa himself steered wide with a header of his own.Between the two sides, Opta said an expected goals (xG) total of 2.54 had been generated between both teams, the third highest in a Premier League game this season which has ended 0-0.Had either of Damsgaard, Mbuemo, Wissa, Van den Berg or Lewis-Potter taken their chances, the Bees would have ended their eight-game wait for a home victory in the league and boosted their slim hopes of qualifying for European football for the first time in their history.

Arsenal told to forget Sesko and Gyokeres and strike £50m Liverpool deal

Arsenal are being urged to sign a player who Liverpool may be willing to sell for £50million, and has been backed to score them plenty of goals despite a disappointing season Arsenal have been urged to sign Darwin Nunez following reports Liverpool could be willing to sell the striker for £50million. The 25-year-old is expected to leave Anfield in the next few months after a disappointing return in front of goal for the newly-crowned Premier League champions this season. The Uruguay international is known to have suitors in the Middle East, with Al-Nassr having a £60m bid for the frontman rejected back in January. The former Benfica man has also attracted interest from teams in Italy, with AC Milan and Napoli both said to be keen on a deal. ‌ Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is now being encouraged to consider a move for Nunez after finishing just behind the Reds in second this term. Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has made the suggestion after boldly claiming he could bag the Gunners 25 goals next season. ‌ Such a tally would require a marked improvement from Nunez, who only scored seven times across all competitions in his most recent campaign. However, the former Wolves and Wrexham manager said he believed Arsenal would be lucky to have him after describing their current transfer targets as "gambles". RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres are Arsenal's reported prime targets, though the former is understood to be the club's favoured direction. 22-year-old striker Sesko scored 21 times last season while Gyokeres netted an incredible 54 goals from 52 matches. Speaking on talkSPORT, Saunders said: "Is there any fan out there that would be disappointed if their club was linked with Nunez? He's not got enough goals for Liverpool, but I think we all look at him with the same eyes. "I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Arsenal and scored 25 goals. The people they've got lined up, they're all gambles. At least he's played in the Premier League for three or four years, and you know what you're going to get. "He works his socks off, even if he doesn't score, so he's not a passenger. That's why the Liverpool fans like him." ‌ He added: "He's not hopeless and what surprises you about him is that he's got every finish in his locker. He can go around the keeper, he can shoot from range and he can score headers, but he does seem to find a way of missing sometimes." Liverpool are looking to sign a new striker this summer, with a move for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike on the cards. With a club-record £116m deal for Florian Wirtz also in the works, it could lead to several outgoings to fund the new arrivals. Nunez is looking for a new challenge after starting just eight Premier League games under Arne Slot this season. He earned praise from his manager for his positive attitude in spite of the lack of minutes. ‌ Discussing Nunez's situation at the moment, Slot said: "I don't know exactly what is going to happen. One of the main strengths we had this season is that everybody accepted his role. "And his role sometimes could be to start every single game, hardly be taken off, sometimes be taken off. It could be sometimes not starting every single game, sometimes not playing hardly [any] minutes." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Wednesday's briefing: Coote charged and Levy reflects on Postecoglou sacking

Former Premier League referee David Coote was charged over remarks he made about ex-Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy described sacking Ange Postecoglou as 'emotionally difficult'. Elsewhere, Jobe Bellingham followed in brother Jude's footsteps by making his Borussia Dortmund debut, while Trent Alexander-Arnold previewed a new era at Real Madrid. Sacked Coote charged by Football Association — FA Spokesperson (@FAspokesperson) June 17, 2025 Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association over remarks he made about ex-Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp. Coote was sacked in December by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) after a video circulated on social media the previous month of him making derogatory comments about Klopp. One of those remarks referenced Klopp's nationality, and the FA said that constituted an alleged 'aggravated breach' under its rules. In the video, Coote is heard saying it had been 's***' to be fourth official at a Liverpool match in the summer of 2020, describing Klopp as a 'German c***'. He also said Klopp was 'f****** arrogant'. Coote declined to comment when contacted via a spokesperson, while the FA has not shared a date by which he must respond. Dismissing Postecoglou was emotionally difficult – Levy Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy insisted he had no regrets about appointing Ange Postecoglou as he described the decision to sack him as 'emotionally difficult'. Despite guiding Spurs to a first trophy in 17 years by securing Europa League glory, Postecoglou was dismissed earlier this month and then replaced by Thomas Frank. Losing 22 Premier League matches and finishing 17th ultimately cost the Australian his job. 'We were over the moon to win a trophy but we need to compete in all competitions,' said Levy. 'We felt that we needed a change. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we have made the right decision for the club.' Bellingham makes Dortmund debut The moment you've been waiting for. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 — Borussia Dortmund (@BlackYellow) June 17, 2025 Jobe Bellingham made his Borussia Dortmund debut from the bench as his new side scraped a goalless draw in their Club World Cup opener against Fluminense in New Jersey. The England Under-21 international played the final 31 minutes at the MetLife Stadium following last week's big-money switch from Sunderland but could not inspire a breakthrough in a tight Group F encounter. Bellingham, 19, followed in the footsteps of elder brother Jude, who spent three years with Dortmund before moving to Real Madrid in 2023. A crowd of 29,755 were in attendance at the 82,500-capacity MetLife Stadium, where Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel make a fine double save to deny Fluminense a second-half winner. Alexander-Arnold ready for new challenge with Real 🤩 @TrentAA 🤩📺 Watch every FIFA Club World Cup 2025 game, FOR FREE, on DAZN! #TakeItToTheWorld | #FIFACWC — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) June 17, 2025 Trent Alexander-Arnold insisted everyone is 'starting from scratch' as they try to take on board the methods of new Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool defender is expected to make his Real debut in Wednesday's Club World Cup clash with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. While Alexander-Arnold is still getting to grips with new surroundings and a different language after joining the LaLiga club last week, head coach Alonso has only been in position since the start of the month. 'It's a new coach and a new coaching staff, so in that sense we're all starting from scratch,' he told RM Play. 'We're all trying to learn and absorb all the information and put it into practice as quickly as possible.' What's on today? Manchester City begin their Club World Cup campaign against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia, while Alexander-Arnold could be involved when Real Madrid meet Simone Inzaghi's Al Hilal in Miami. England Under-21s will bid to qualify for the knockout stages of the European Championship in their Group B clash with Germany.
