Even three years after launch, people not able to track movement of city buses using Mangaluru Smart City app
The MSCL launched its app in April 2021, which also had a 'smart transport' feature (a section in the app), among other features, to help people track the movement of city buses. This feature was incorporated in the app shortly after 'Chalo app', launched by Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners' Association in association with a mobility firm, failed to serve the purpose as buses kept their GPS devices off while on the city roads.
'Initially GPS feed of nearly 200 buses was made available to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) of the MSCL. The feed came down to 60 buses three months ago. Now we are getting the feed of only 30 buses,' an MSCL official told The Hindu.
But when searched by clicking on the 'smart transport' section, either on the basis of destination or by bus route number, list of buses with route number appears with a note 'trip not started'.
When reluctance of bus operators to share the GPS feed of their buses with the ICCL of MSCL was raised in the district Road Transport Authority meeting on November 5, 2024, the Deputy Commissioner M. P. Mullai Muhilan said not sharing GPS feed will be considered as an offence. While stating that 'smart transport' feature will be fully functional from the end of November 2024, the Deputy Commissioner said the 'smart transport' feature will help district administration to rationalise city bus routes.
Despite the instruction by the Deputy Commissioner, the city bus operators are not sharing GPS feed with the MSCL.
Shridhar K. Mallad, Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Mangaluru who is member-secretary of District Road Transport Authority, said he will pursue matter with the city bus owners.
Without telling the reasons for not sharing the GPS data with MSCL, President of Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners' Association, Aziz Parthpady, told The Hindu: 'We will sort out the issues involved to enable people to track the movement of buses on the app.'

Initial fishing catch ignites hope of good season in coastal Karnataka, but there is one concern
Marine fishers in Karnataka coast, who did not have good fishing season last fishing year, have a reason to cheer as they got good catch at the beginning of the 2025 fishing season that began in August. While about 40% of the about 1,400 deep sea fishing vessels registered in Mangaluru ventured into the sea starting August 10, fishing vessels at Malpe, another important fishing harbour in coastal Karnataka, did not venture out in good numbers, according to sources. 'Those who went to the sea from August 10 have returned after four-five days following weather advisory. By then, most of them had a good catch of different varieties of fish,' said Mohan Bengre, a fishermen leader in Mangaluru. 'Overall, there has been a good catch, following which more deep vessels have ventured into the sea this week,' he told The Hindu. The Mangaluru fishing port has been abuzz with activities for the past one week with fishermen as well as traders engaged in brisk unloading of catch from vessels, purchasing the catch and loading varieties of fish onto waiting trucks. Availability of fresh fish in markets has delighted consumers, who for the past three months depended either on produce from the east coast or dry fish products. Small size 'However, there has been a cause for concern with the arrival of fresh catch in the market, as the species have not grown fully,' said U. Mahesh Kumar, General Manager with the Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation. Giving an example, he said about 15 Mackerels (Bangude) weighed one kilogram as against the earlier four-five fishes. This indicates that the species have not fully grown and underscores the need for enhanced fishing holiday. Mr. Bengre echoed the sentiment. 'At least 90 days of fishing holiday is required to allow species to grow fully. However, all States on the west coast should follow a uniform holiday system,' he said. Mr. Kumar said the State and Central Governments are awaiting the report of a study by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute on extended fishing holiday. 'If the report by the premier institute favours the same, the governments would implement it,' he said.

Talent pool drives eBay to set up Global Capability Centre in Bengaluru
The quality and diversity of talent in Bengaluru prompted the American e-commerce company eBay to choose the city over Hyderabad to set up its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India, said Mazen Rawashdeh, SVP & Chief Technology Officer, eBay. He was speaking to The Hindu ahead of the unveiling of the GCC. 'The talent in India, in general, is amazing. We were debating between Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and we decided on Bengaluru as the quality and diversity of the talent is really attractive want to open and expand our presence with the dev centre and attract top talent. It's a world-class tier-1 tech dev centre for us,' he said. eBay's approximately 65,000-square-foot new office will host a variety of functions, including technology and engineering, AI/ML, applied research, product development, product management, data analytics and more. According to Rawashdeh, the centre, which is expected to see upwards of 300 engineers, would play a strategic role for the company and would serve as a technology innovation hub similar to those in the U.S. and China. 'Us coming to India at this point is not a business strategy. It's not to expand eBay's business in India,' said Mr. Rawashdeh, calling it a '180-degree shift' from the company's previous stint in the country. 'We never exited India. We stayed here, but shrunk the footprint, and looked at supporting and augmenting the functions outside of India. This time the strategy is completely different,' he said. Clarifying that the centre would not simply serve as a supporting role, but would build, incubate and architect services and functions, including engineering, design and product development, he said that it will have a semi-autonomous team. Mr. Rawashdeh added that the company is already in talks with the government and universities, similar to how it is done in the U.S. 'We intend to build those relationships, especially with the universities from a research and development angle. That would be a great pipeline to not only bring talent to the organization, but also leverage the tremendous experience and knowledge with the PhD students and do joint research with them,' he said.
