Ramadoss hits out at Anbumani, his wife over PMK's loss in 2024 Lok Sabha polls
Founder of PMK (NDA ally) S Ramadoss on Thursday said that though he wanted to remain in an alliance with the AIADMK, his son and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss and his wife wanted to align with the BJP.
'I wanted an alliance with AIADMK for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,' Ramadoss said at a press conference held at his residence in Thailapuram. 'But suddenly, Anbumani and his wife Sowmya came to Thailapuram and cried to me, and held my legs insisting on an alliance with the BJP…. An AIADMK-PMK alliance would have been a natural one. Had it materialised, PMK might have won three seats and AIADMK seven. We could have won 10 seats together. Anbumani said that if we were to refuse a BJP alliance, I should be the one to take the blame. I was left with no option.'
To be clear, Ramadoss's assertion has been doing rounds ever since the AIADMK left the BJP in 2023 before patching up this April. After the split, those in the NDA including PMK stayed with the BJP with only the DMDK taking the AIADMK's side.
Over the years, the PMK which is an influential party among the dominant community of Vanniyars with a core vote bank of about 5%, has swung between the DMK and AIADMK except in 2016 when Anbumani was their chief ministerial candidate. The patriarch on April 11 took over the party from his son, successor and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss. The father made himself president of the PMK once again and announced that Anbumani would be its working president on the day Union home minister Amit Shah arrived in Chennai. On the following day, Shah announced that the BJP and AIADMK have patched up after 19 months and will fight the 2026 elections together.
Anbumani subsequently challenged his father asserting that he continues to be the party chief since he was elected by PMK's general council. Anbumani's Rajya Sabha tenure also ends in July and his seat is among the six seats in Tamil Nadu to which biennial elections will be held. While the DMK has announced it's nominees for 6 seats, the AIADMK is yet to announce for two seats.
Senior Ramadoss accused his son of threatening PMK officer bearers against attending his meeting in which only 13 out of 220 party office bearers turned up on May 16. The incident also indicated that the support within the PMK was leaning towards his son. Ramadoss, who is now 85, also regretted letting Anbumani become a Union minister at the age of 35 in 2004 and accused him of trying to attack his mother during a family gathering. 'I have led this movement for 45 years with discipline and dignity,' an emotional Ramadoss said. 'But now, the very calf I raised has turned on me. I am shattered.' He accused his son for the rift and for the weakening of the PMK.
Ramadoss and Anbumani have been sparring publicly since December 2024. Anbumani had objected to Ramadoss' decision to appoint his nephew as the youth wing chief of PMK. 'He flung the microphone on the table which barely missed my head,' Ramadoss said critiquing that he lacked leadership qualities.
At the PMK youth conference held on May 11, Anbumani praised his father for his effort for over 45 years with the Union government which has now announced conducting a caste census. But, the father did not return the kind words and said that the cadre are not working hard enough. Anbumani and his supporters did not wish to comment until the time of writing.

Reflecting on their meeting with the External Affairs Minister, Salman Khurshid noted that Jaishankar was well-informed about the delegation's engagements abroad, having been briefed by ambassadors. Khurshid said the minister was aware of 'where we met whom, at what level, and the main issues raised,' and that broader discussions also touched upon concerns requiring government attention. During the discussions, the parliamentarians highlighted the issue of the lack of reciprocal friendship associations abroad. Khurshid explained, 'In many places, the one-way friendship association is theirs,' adding that Indian parliamentarians 'have not been able to take those steps from our side yet.' The External Affairs Minister acknowledged these points and assured that they would be studied carefully. Additionally, Khurshid mentioned that the delegation was asked to provide detailed context about their visits and the issues discussed, with 'messages from every country [already] coming to our government. Security lapse led to Bengaluru stampede: CPI Narayana

Calcutta HC grants interim bail to law student Sharmistha Panoli, father expresses happiness
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 6 (ANI): Law student Sharmistha Panoli, arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a social media post, has been granted interim bail by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. The court directed her to cooperate with the investigation, not leave the country, and furnished bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also ordered appropriate police protection for her. Her father, Prithviraj Panoli, expressed relief, citing her health issues, including kidney problems and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Prithviraj Panoli said, 'I am very happy... no father would like his daughter to stay in jail. Her mother was crying for a long time, but she is very happy now. There were two concerns: his kidney problem and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). She needs regular medicine, but since we didn't have a prescription, the medicine wasn't given in jail.' 'Also, when the video was posted, we found out after two days and told her to delete it. We hoped this would be a lesson for her, and that she would do better in the future,' Panoli said. According to Sharmistha's lawyer, DP Singh, bail was granted on three conditions: Sharmistha must surrender her passport, cooperate with the investigation, and sign a bail bond. DP Singh argued that Sharmistha is a victim of circumstances and that her social media post was a defence of her country based on videos she had seen. He questioned the severity of the response, suggesting that the community's reaction was disproportionate to her actions. Speaking to ANI, Advocate DP Singh said, 'She has got bail on 3 conditions, that she will surrender her passport, she will join the investigation and sign a bail is happening right now in the country is wrong. You just arrest speak what they see, their exposure is she said, she said it based on the videos she children don't know is a fight between India & Pakistan and they are just defending their country, so in such a situation... if we remove the clip of 5-10 seconds, she didn't say anything is a victim of circumstances...a whole community has stood up against is not like a riot took place because of what she said, so why is she being punished?' In a post on X, Suvendu Adhikari said, 'Justice has been served today - Sharmistha Panoli, a law student, aged about 22 years, has been released on interim bail by the Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta.' He called her arrest 'police atrocities' and said she was wrongly arrested for exercising her right to free speech. He accused Kolkata Police of acting to please political leaders. 'This is a case of police atrocities as an innocent young lady, for using her freedom of speech and expression, has been illegally arrested by the Kolkata Police and was sent to judicial custody. This is yet another example of police overzealousness and eagerness to please their political masters,' the post reads. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and West Bengal BJP Legal Cell member Sanjukta Samanta filed an FIR against Wazahat Khan, who filed an FIR against Sharmistha Panoli, at two Police Stations, Ballygunje Police Station, Kolkata and Howrah Police Station. Paul said there should be equal rights and rules for every community. Speaking to ANI, Agnimitra Paul said, 'Yes, I have filed a police complaint against Wazahat Khan, who filed a police complaint against Sharmistha Panoli. I believe that Dr BR Ambedkar Ji's constitution is applicable in West Bengal, and there should be equal rights and rules for every Khan, who complained against Sharmistha Panoli, had posted an abusive post against our goddess Maa Kamakhya and Lord Krishna. If a Muslim is insulting my god and goddess, the same action needs to be taken for Wazahat Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has sent his police force to arrest Wazahat Khan, Mamata Banerjee's police, because of her Muslim appeasement, have been hiding and shielding Wazahat Khan...' The 22-year-old law student from Pune, Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on May 30, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with a video on Operation Sindoor. The Instagram clip was reportedly derogatory towards a particular religion. However, Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15. (ANI)
