Calcutta HC grants interim bail to law student Sharmistha Panoli, father expresses happiness
The court directed her to cooperate with the investigation, not leave the country, and furnished bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also ordered appropriate police protection for her.
Her father, Prithviraj Panoli, expressed relief, citing her health issues, including kidney problems and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Prithviraj Panoli said, 'I am very happy... no father would like his daughter to stay in jail. Her mother was crying for a long time, but she is very happy now. There were two concerns: his kidney problem and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). She needs regular medicine, but since we didn't have a prescription, the medicine wasn't given in jail.'
'Also, when the video was posted, we found out after two days and told her to delete it. We hoped this would be a lesson for her, and that she would do better in the future,' Panoli said.
According to Sharmistha's lawyer, DP Singh, bail was granted on three conditions: Sharmistha must surrender her passport, cooperate with the investigation, and sign a bail bond.
DP Singh argued that Sharmistha is a victim of circumstances and that her social media post was a defence of her country based on videos she had seen. He questioned the severity of the response, suggesting that the community's reaction was disproportionate to her actions.
Speaking to ANI, Advocate DP Singh said, 'She has got bail on 3 conditions, that she will surrender her passport, she will join the investigation and sign a bail bond...whatever is happening right now in the country is wrong. You just arrest students...they speak what they see, their exposure is different...whatever she said, she said it based on the videos she saw...These children don't know much...there is a fight between India & Pakistan and they are just defending their country, so in such a situation... if we remove the clip of 5-10 seconds, she didn't say anything wrong...She is a victim of circumstances...a whole community has stood up against her...it is not like a riot took place because of what she said, so why is she being punished?'
West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said, 'Justice has been served today.'
In a post on X, Suvendu Adhikari said, 'Justice has been served today - Sharmistha Panoli, a law student, aged about 22 years, has been released on interim bail by the Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta.'

He called her arrest 'police atrocities' and said she was wrongly arrested for exercising her right to free speech. He accused Kolkata Police of acting to please political leaders.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and West Bengal BJP Legal Cell member Sanjukta Samanta filed an FIR against Wazahat Khan, who filed an FIR against Sharmistha Panoli, at two Police Stations, Ballygunje Police Station, Kolkata and Howrah Police Station.
Paul said there should be equal rights and rules for every community.
Speaking to ANI, Agnimitra Paul said, 'Yes, I have filed a police complaint against Wazahat Khan, who filed a police complaint against Sharmistha Panoli. I believe that Dr BR Ambedkar Ji's constitution is applicable in West Bengal, and there should be equal rights and rules for every community...Wazahat Khan, who complained against Sharmistha Panoli, had posted an abusive post against our goddess Maa Kamakhya and Lord Krishna. If a Muslim is insulting my god and goddess, the same action needs to be taken for Wazahat Khan...As Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has sent his police force to arrest Wazahat Khan, Mamata Banerjee's police, because of her Muslim appeasement, have been hiding and shielding Wazahat Khan...'
The 22-year-old law student from Pune, Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on May 30, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with a video on Operation Sindoor.
The Instagram clip was reportedly derogatory towards a particular religion. However, Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15. (ANI)

Yogi showcases his governance model, makes 2027 poll pitch
Amid a buzz about a restructuring in the BJP after its less than expected performance in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday set the pitch for the 2027 assembly polls, highlighted his government's achievements over the last eight years and spelt out future endeavours in his marathon address in the state assembly on Vision 2047. Schemes are implemented without discrimination or appeasement now, he said while asserting that the Opposition's PDA slogan is a ploy to deceive the public whereas his government has truly worked for Pichhda (backward), Dalit and Alpsankhyak (minority) artisans. Reaching out to the rural populace, whose vote will be decisive, he said from 1947 to 2017 villages areas suffered from a severe lack of basic facilities such as housing, electricity, roads, and drinking water. From 2017 to 2025, his government provided permanent houses to more than 56.80 lakh families. Additionally, 235 crore man-days were generated under MGNREGA. To promote employment and livelihood in rural areas, more than 98 lakh families have joined self-help groups (SHGs), he said. Prashant Trivedi, associate professor at Giri Institute of Development Studies, Lucknow, said the incumbent government has focused on infrastructure, but it is no more a political issue since successive governments have done well on this front. 'The 2027 challenge before the BJP government would be how they address people's issues like access to quality education, public health and decent employment. Surely, things are not as rosy as they appear on this front,' he said.

Impose Trump's illogical tariff on China, US importers too: Amitabh Kant
Former NITI Aayog CEO and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant on Thursday termed the additional 25 per cent tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on Indian goods as "totally arbitrary" and lacking "any logic," urging that India should consider imposing similar duties on other countries, including US, which still imports critical minerals from Russia. "India should never bend. We should look at a long-term perspective. The Prime Minister has invested a lot in this relationship with the United States over the last decade. We should adopt a long-term perspective and ultimately win the game against the United States," Kant told ANI. He pointed out that other major economies, such as Turkey, the EU, and China, also import significant quantities of energy and minerals from Russia or China. "A 25 per cent tariff is arbitrary. It is not comprehensible to me because then you should also be imposing a 25 per cent tariff on China and Turkey. But you should also be imposing it on Europe, which is a very major importer of gas from Russia, and you should also be imposing it on many of the importers in the United States, as the United States is importing a lot of critical minerals from Russia; all critical minerals are still being imported from China. So it doesn't stand to any logic," he said. Kant also urged India to maintain its strategic autonomy and energy security in the face of proposed US tariffs, saying that India should prioritise its national interests and not compromise on its energy security, especially considering that India's oil imports from Russia are significantly lower than those of China or Turkey. The US has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, citing India's continued purchase of Russian oil. "I'm a believer that India should not compromise on its energy security or its strategic autonomy. We are here for a long-term game, and we must win the long-term war. My belief is that we built up a relationship with the United States over two and a half decades, which was bipartisan. And this attempt to put a 50 per cent duty does not stand to logic because we import oil," he said. Earlier, Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India, citing matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws. He claimed that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had termed the US move "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable," and said New Delhi will take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests.
