Steven Gerrard favourite for Championship job that would see him replace former team-mate as manager
STEVEN GERRARD is the bookies' favourite to become Middlesbrough's next manager. The Liverpool legend has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January. 1 He was linked with a return to Rangers but pulled out of the race before Russell Martin was appointed. Instead his return to management could come at Championship side Middlesbrough. If he gets the job he will succeed his former England team-mate Michael Carrick, who was sacked last week. Gerrard, 45, is the bookies' favourite to take over at the Riverside Stadium, ahead of Rob Edwards and Steve Cooper. It appears the former Three Lions star is keen on a return to the UK after an ill-fated spell in the Middle East. Gerrard lasted just 18 months at Al-Ettifaq and won 23 of his 59 matches in charge. That stint came after he was sacked at Aston Villa following a return of two wins in the opening 12 games of the 2022-23 Premier League season. His best reign came at Rangers, where he oversaw the club's first league title for nine years in 2021. He accumulated 102 points and went unbeaten in the Scottish Premier League, ending Celtic 's period of dominance. Gerrard won 65 per cent of his games in charge at Ibrox.

The two-time Wimbledon champion returned to the court for the first time in a year to commemorate the special occasion. It's a venue which holds many memories for the Dunblane star, who said when addressing the crowd: "I've obviously missed being out here. First time not being involved in a grass court season in a while, but I've got a new life now and enjoying being away from the sport. 'It's cool, this tournament and this court has had many special moments for me. It's the place, the tournament not the court, where I won my first match on the ATP Tour, 'It was my most successful event; I always love coming back here at the start of the British summer. "I'm very proud of the results I had here. I'm very grateful and thankful for whoever it was who decided to name the stadium this was.' He was given a guard of honour by the ball kids as he made his way out onto the court. Murray was then joined by former British tennis player and tournament director of the HSBC Championships WTA event, Laura Robson, 10-year-old Gloria Pearce from the Queen's Club Foundation and seven-year-old Jay Ikanone from Greenhouse Sport for a quick doubles match. But before he even picked up his racket, Murray, 38, admitted he was feeling rusty after a year out. He joked: 'My tennis is diabolical nowadays so apologies for what you're about to witness but I'll give it a go'. Moment Andy Murray holes stunning putt from off the green in challenge match with brother Jamie - but rivals have last laugh Murray ended up winning both points with his partner Gloria. He was then given the honour of doing the coin toss for the first match of the WTA 500 event between Petra Kvitova and Beatriz Haddad Maia. It was a highly-anticipated match as it's first time in 52 years that a women's event has been held in London. Haddad Maia came out on top over three sets, winning the second and third set 6-4 after losing the opener 6-2. Making a historic return to the London grass venue for women's tennis after five decades, Raducanu and Boulter faced off against Fang-Hsein Wu and Xinyu Jiang in their opening round, yet fans could not follow the action on free-to-air TV. While singles play dominated coverage on the main show court, now named the Andy Murray Arena, the British pair's efforts on Court One went untelevised, leaving supporters unable to witness their maiden team-up. Presenting the coverage, Isa Guha remarked: "Unfortunately, we won't be able to show you this match because we're focused on Andy Murray Arena, but we will be bringing you updates throughout the course of the afternoon." Prior to the match, Boulter shared her enthusiasm about playing with Raducanu, revealing in an interview with TNT Sports that they had long anticipated the partnership. She commented: "I think myself and Emma, we've been wanting to play for a while now. I think we've talked about it a lot of times," reports the Express. Article continues below Adding: "Unfortunately, it just hasn't quite happened for various reasons. I think [for the] first week on grass, to get a couple more matches is super important. "I think we were actually here at Queen's, practising on the clay, and we decided we thought we'd come back and play on the grass together. It'll be extremely special. Obviously, she's a great player and I'm looking forward to having the first of many more." Raducanu also shared her thoughts: "Playing a doubles match with Katie will hopefully give me a good feel for that surface and it will be positive. I really like playing with Katie. We've practiced a few times together in the past at Billie Jean King Cup ties." The former US Open winner has been contending with a back issue lately but is eager to put that behind her as she gears up for Wimbledon. She detailed her recent challenges: "I got back [from Paris] last week and then I got straight back on the court. I had a small interruption with a bit of a back spasm again, which was a bit annoying and that hindered my grass prep. "The last few days I have managed to get on the grass. I can't really predict the future. I know I have been managing my back for the last few weeks now and it's something that comes and goes. Article continues below "It can be frustrating. I try not to let it get to me because I have a pretty good feel when it happens of how to manage it. All I can do is deal with what's in front of me." The Brit pair won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
