Long wait for farmers for money after having sold paddy in DPCs
A group of farmers, who are waiting for more than two months for getting the money for the paddy they had sold in the Union government's direct procurement centre, submitted petition with District Collector R. Sukumar on Monday seeking his intervention.
The petitioner farmers said the State government had opened 40 paddy Direct Procurement Centres (DPC) in Tirunelveli district and the union government had established 25 DPCs for procuring paddy from the farmers at the minimum support price fixed by the Centre.
While the State is paying the amount in the farmers' bank accounts immediately after procuring the paddy at its DPC, the union government is yet to pay this amount even after two months for the paddy procured in the DPCs at Kuppaikurichi, Keezhapaattam, Mela Seval, Ariyakulam and Naththam.
'Consequently, around 300 farmers have been waiting indefinitely for the amount to be paid in their accounts by the Centre. Hence, the Collector should instruct the officials of the Union government to pay the paddy procurement amount to the farmers without further delay,' said Thalavai, one of the affected farmers.
A group of students of a private training centre, who were allegedly cheated by the training institute after collecting the course fee from them also submitted petition to the Collector seeking his intervention to get back their money.
The affected students said they all doing their graduation in various colleges, had joined a 6-months certificate programme in a private institute's branch at Vannarpet here for getting jobs with attractive salary.
'After collecting the fee from us, the training institute's branch manager and her associate gave us receipt for the course fee. Even as the course was about to start, the office was closed down without any intimation to the students. When we tried to contact them, their mobile phones remain switched off. As we contacted the head-office of this institute, we came to know that the branch manager and her associate had not paid our fee to the head-office. Hence, the Collector should help us to get our money back,' said P. Abdullah, one of the affected students, who is working with a private firm for paying the fee of ₹15,000 for two courses.

Asaduddin Owaisi files police complaint over deepfake video promoting scam
AIMIM chief files a police complaint after a deepfake video falsely promoting a scam using his identity goes viral online. Police register case; probe underway to trace origin New Delhi The Hyderabad police have registered a case after a deepfake video of AIMIM president and member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi surfaced online, falsely linking him to an investment scheme. Owaisi, who has in recent days emerged as one of the most trenchant critics of Pakistan's terror activities in the wake of the Pahalgam attacks, had urged authorities to instruct social media platforms to remove the fake video, file a case, and trace those responsible. The AI-generated video used Owaisi's face and voice, along with several other public figures, to mislead viewers into thinking he was endorsing a investment plan, police said on Saturday. The video falsely claimed that the scheme could yield returns of ₹53,000 per day. According to the Hyderabad MP's complaint, the video directed people to a fake website, putting them at risk of financial loss. "The video was created and uploaded along with malicious content to lure innocent people and to make false propaganda in my name," Owaisi stated in his police complaint. Police added that the video also included AI-generated visuals of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani, and Infosys founder Narayana Murthy. Following Owaisi's complaint, the Cyber Crime Police Station registered a case on June 5 under relevant provisions of the IT Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a senior officer confirmed on Saturday. An investigation is underway, and efforts are being made to take down the video from all platforms, the officer added.

Thrissur (Kerala) [India], June 7 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Tourism & Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, met actor Shine Tom Chacko at a private hospital in Thrissur. Malayalam actor Chacko was admitted to the hospital after he met with a road accident in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Chacko and his family were in a car accident, in which the actor lost his father. South India International Movies Awards (SIIMA) took to X and extended condolences to Chacko and his family. SIIMA wrote, 'Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko was injured in a tragic car accident near Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu. The accident claimed the life of his father, CP Chacko, who died on the spot. The family was en route to Bengaluru when their car collided with a stationary lorry. Shine, along with his mother, brother, and driver, sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment. SIIMA extends its heartfelt condolences to Shine Tom Chacko and his family during this time of grief.' Chacko was recently arrested in a narcotics case and was later released on bail. Malayalam actors Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi appeared before excise officials in Alappuzha in April, as part of an ongoing investigation into the seizure of hybrid ganja worth approximately Rs 2 crore earlier that month. The drugs were discovered in the possession of a woman, who allegedly told the excise authorities that she had consumed drugs alongside both Chacko and Bhasi. Based on her statement, the excise department issued notices to the actors, prompting their appearance for questioning. Chacko has previously also faced allegations of drug use and misconduct. On April 22, the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) issued a final warning to the actor, urging him to refrain from any further drug use or disruptive behaviour on film sets. (ANI)
