College World Series Preview: 3 things to know about Coastal Carolina
The College World Series returns this week for the 75th anniversary of the CWS in Omaha. LSU baseball is headed to Omaha for the 20th time in program history. The Tigers will be joined by seven other programs looking to make a run at the national title.
Just about every pocket of the country is represented in the field of eight. There's a heavy West Coast presence with Arizona, Oregon State, and UCLA. LSU and Arkansas represent the boot, while Murray State and Louisville represent Kentucky. From the Southeast, we have Coastal Carolina.
We have a fresh field as none of these teams were in Omaha last year.
A few schools are chasing their first national championship while programs like LSU and Arizona look to add to a large trophy case.
Ahead of the CWS, we'll examine all eight teams. With only two SEC teams in the field, LSU fans are likely unfamiliar with most of these squads.
Here are three things to know about Coastal Carolina.
The Chanticleers are riding a 23-game win streak
Coastal Carolina is the hottest team in college baseball right now. The Chanticleers' last loss came on April 22 at The College of Charleston. Since then, Coastal Carolina has notched four sweeps and won the Sun Belt Tournament.
There are always questions about how teams like Coastal will fare against power conference competition, but CCU quieted those concerns. The win streak includes a victory over Clemson and a sweep of Auburn in the super regional. This team has the talent to hang with the top squads in college baseball.
According to the Massey Ratings, Coastal Carolina is the fourth-best team in the sport. They're far from a sleeper in Omaha.
Led Sun Belt in stolen bases and fielding percentage
The little things can be the difference in June baseball.
Coastal Carolina led the Sun Belt in stolen bases and fielding percentage. The Chanticleers can create extra runs on offense and know how to keep them off the board on defense.
Sebastian Alexander is one of the top runners in the country with 27 steals on the year. Wells Sykes can run too, with 17 steals to his name.
CCU has a strong defense behind the plate as well, with First-Team All-Sun Belt catcher Caden Bodine.
Pitching staff is deep
The only pitching staff in Omaha that can rival Coastal Carolina from a depth standpoint is Arkansas, and the Razorbacks are on the other side of the bracket. With a strong starting rotation and deep bullpen, the Chanticleers have the tools to fight out of the losers' bracket if they must.
Jacob Morrison has been one of the top pitchers in the country all year. The big righty is 11-0 with a 2.15 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 96.1 innings pitched.
Along with Morrison, you have Riley Eikhoff, who has a 2.90 ERA in 15 starts. It doesn't stop there as Cameron Flukey, 3.24 ERA in 91.2 innings, rounds out the rotation.
Not many teams have three bonafide starters like that.

EUGENE, Oregon (WKBN) – YSU senior Tye Hunt finished 10th in the long jump at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday. Hunt's best jump measured 7.77m at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. University of Florida senior and three-time First Team All-American Malcolm Clemons won the event with a jump of 8.04m on his first attempt to win his first national title. Hunt was one of 24 finalists in the country to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He posted a season-best 7.92m at the Virginia Challenge in April. He also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last year and finished in ninth place to earn All-American honors. Hunt's teammate Hunter Christopher will compete in the 5,000m NCAA finals on Friday. Last season, before the trade deadline, the San Antonio Spurs added All-Star point guard De'Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings, hoping that he would be the long-term running mate for Victor Wembanyama. A few weeks later, Fox had his season ended as well, undergoing surgery on his pinkie finger. In 17 games with the Spurs, Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists, clearly needing to get used to his new team. He expects to use the offseason to settle into his role with his new teammates and is already playing five-on-five and has been cleared for contact. 'I'm doing well. The surgery went fine,' Fox told The Houston Chronicle. 'I've been cleared, so I played a little five-on-five, and I've done contact stuff, so I'll be ready for next year.' The Spurs gave up Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Sidy Cissoko, and four first-round draft picks to the Kings and Chicago Bulls in a three-team deal to land Fox, although several of those picks had protections on them, and one of them ended up not conveying to the Kings. Gabe Craig named first-team All American
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, or NCBWA, announced Baylor senior right-handed pitcher Gabe Craig as a First Team All-American on Wednesday, marking the first time a Baylor Bear received the recognition since Kyle Hill in 2019. Craig is the 11th different Bear in program history to earn first-team praise for a total of 28 times. Alongside Hill, Craig is now one of only two First Team All-America relief pitchers in program history. Additionally, Luke Boyd (2021), Zane Carlson (2000) and Troy Montemayor (2017) are the only other relievers to have earned All-America status, regardless of team distinction, in Baylor history. Statistically one of the most dominant relievers in the country, Craig finished the 2025 season with a 3-0 record and earned 10 saves in 32 innings of work. He struck out 51 batters and walked just three, holding opponents to a .124 batting average. He led the nation with a microscopic 0.56 ERA, a 0.50 WHIP and a 17:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Craig also ranked second nationally in H/9 (3.66), third in BB/9 (0.84) and owned the fifth-best K/9 (14.34) among Division I relievers. The NCBWA previously named Craig a finalist for the Stopper of the Year Award in addition to being named one of five finalists for the 2025 College Baseball Foundation National Pitcher of the Year Award. He also picked up All-Big 12 First Team accolades and ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region Second Team praise earlier this summer. This is Craig's second All-America honor in as many days.
