'Walking Dead: Dead City' renewed for Season 3
July 16 (UPI) -- AMC Networks announced Wednesday it has renewed The Walking Dead: Dead City for a third seasons. Production begins in Boston, Mass., this fall.
Dead City is set in a post-apocalyptic New York where Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) encounter new gangs of survivors, and many more zombies. The show films in Boston to double for New York.
Seth Hoffman takes over as Season 3 showrunner from Eli Jorné. Hoffman wrote and co-executive produced three seasons of the main Walking Dead series.
Dead City is one of three ongoing Walking Dead spinoffs, along with Daryl Dixon, starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, and The Ones Who Live, starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira. Dead City Season 2 concluded June 22.
Morgan spoke with UPI in April about his movie Neighborhood Watch, during which he mentioned he is contracted for two more seasons of Dead City, of which Season 3 will be one. In May, he told UPI he is still enjoying the growth of Negan from the series to the spinoff.

Gad dropped out of the high-profile show earlier this week because he is battling COVID. "Well... this weekend just got Biblical. I'm stepping in as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the @HollywoodBowl, starring the brilliant @cynthiaerivo. King @Joshgad unexpectedly got hit with COVID (feel better soon, brother! )and while I didn't push him down the stairs, I am grateful for the chance to step into the gold lamé," Stamos wrote on Instagram Thursday, "This is an honor. A dream. And also a little insane because... I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off. Wish me luck. And let's rock the Bowl!" The production will feature Cynthia Erivo as the title character, Phillipa Soo as Mary Magdalene and Adam Lambert as Judas.

'Descendants/Zombies: Worlds Collide' concert delivers on all 8 films

Photo courtesy of Disney Concerts LOS ANGELES, August 1 (UPI) -- Disney Channel musicals like Zombies and Descendants are meant to be watched repeatedly, with the soundtracks on loop. The Disney Descendants/Zombies: Worlds Collide Tour, touring through Sept. 16, has created a once-in-a-lifetime experience for fans of the films, unless of course parents take kids from city-to-city like young Grateful Deadheads. The show sees Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, Dara Reneé and Joshua Colley from Descendants: The Rise of Red join Zombies 4 stars Freya Skye, Malachi Barton and Mekonnen Knife on stage. Both casts perform their own songs from the latest films, along with classics from earlier entries, crafting an experience covering all eight films. Judging by the Los Angeles crowd, the genuine screeches of fans literally have the power to drown out the music. They do subside long enough to hear a chorus or two, but the enthusiasm never dies down through a three-hour show, including an intermission. The performers engage the crowd leading into each song. Knife quizzes the audience on Red's (Cantrall) dance moves to lead into her introduction song, aptly titled "Red." Later, Cantrall leads the crowd in a werewolf howl to call the wolves, as Reneé leads "We Own the Night" from Zombies 2. In Los Angeles, the male cast members posed for someone's phone camera and played Hide and Seek with the spotlights. Barton taught the audience how to do the "Shuffle of Love" dance from the Rise of Red song of the same name. As rousing as the singing performers are, a team of background dancers elevates the show further. Those dancers wave flags, red shields, halos and other props, even using feathers to make a magic carpet when the Descendants sing about Aladdin -- this is after Skye emerges out of a giant cupcake to sing "Life Is Sweeter." Each performer reflects on how much it means to them to be on stage. Particularly the Los Angeles locals, including Cantrall, who got emotional about being on the same stage where she saw Beyoncé perform as a young fan, and Barton, who had just seen Jelly Roll at the venue this year. Skye and Barton walk into the crowd as they sing their duet from Zombies 4, "Dream Come True," and even on stage, Skye waved at every fan she saw personally. Likewise, Syke and Reneé shook hands with fans up close on their way off stage during the show's many costume changes. A healthy video component maintains the world of the films too. Red calls her mother, the Queen of Hearts, on her phone. Zombies stars Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly recorded a video where they led the crowd in a singalong of their duet "Someday" from the first film. Skye and Barton performed the song live, as Zombies 4 was literally about passing the torch to them, Manheim and Donnelly also pretended to notice all the cosplayers in the audience, but let's not spoil it for the kids. They totally saw your awesome costumes! Other footage included scenes from the films and personal videos. Among the videos was a veritable time lapse of Cantrall growing up live on social media, Skye and Barton's audition video singing "Rewrite the Stars," Colley's childhood Halloween photos and Reneé as a kid at the Cheetah Girls/Hannah Montana concert, the previous generation's Disney phenomenons. Cantrall, Skye and Colley perform some of their originals too. Those are more pop radio tunes than Disney musicals, and demonstrate their range. Baker also performs her Descendants song "If Only" on her acoustic guitar, showing her raw talent is equal to the big production numbers. Whether one belongs to the target audience or simply has access through their children or the media, Descendants/Zombies: Worlds Collide is a heck of a show. The energy is contagious with boppy songs, extravagant production and charismatic performers. Temuera Morrison wants native Hawaiians to be proud of 'Chief of War'

Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ NEW YORK, July 31 (UPI) -- Aquaman and The Book of Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison says he hopes native Hawaiians are proud that Chief of War focuses on their history and features a primarily Polynesian cast. "This is very fresh. I haven't seen anything quite like this before in my whole life," Morrison, 64, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "At the end of the day, I want Hawaiian people to be proud and reclaim themselves, reclaim their identity and feel proud about their Hawaiian heritage," the New Zealander added. "We're blessed because we're all the same people." We are representing all these people and I am playing her ancestor. Fortunately for me, she never hit me on the head with her microphone, so I must have been on the right track." Premiering Friday on Apple TV+, the nine-episode series takes place in 18th century Hawaii when the islands' leaders disagreed about whether they should peacefully unify or conquer each other. Jason Momoa co-wrote and produced the action drama, in which he also plays Ka'iana, the titular hero. Morrison plays his frenemy Chief Kahekili and Cliff Curtis plays Keoua, another rival king. "Jason needed some support posts around him. He knew Cliff and I had the experience in this medium," Morrison said. "We were humbled to get the opportunity. Personally, it was quite an adventure, spiritually, culturally. We all had to learn the Hawaiian language. That was quite challenging." Morrison admitted he initially had some reservations about taking on the pivotal role in such an epic. "I'm very, very grateful that I decided to do this project because I was trying to run away in the beginning. I didn't think I could do it," he recalled. "Then, there were things like the cold. We were running around with hardly any clothes on. My feet aren't as hard as our Polynesian ancestors' used to be. Every now and then, I'd be like: 'Ah! Ah! Can I wear my shoes, please, please!' The volcanic rocks were killing me, but what a journey it's been." It was Hawaiian-born Momoa who convinced Morrison to join the epic project. "Jason said: 'Bro, bro, we're the same people, man! We're the same people. Get on board!' So, with those words of encouragement, I said, 'Yeah, bro, you are right. I think it's about sharing our Polynesian culture and heritage and supporting one another," Morrison said. Fear the Walking Dead and The Meg alum Curtis, 57, described his and Morrison's characters as the antagonists of the story. "The hero's journey is shown through the character Ka'iana, played by Jason Momoa. He's the chief who left the Hawaiian islands, went into the world and came back with technology to help unite the islands," Curtis said. "The chief of war has to choose which king he is going to fight for. It's a classic, archetypal story structure. Even though there is a new language and new costumes, visages and things that look different, the classical structure is something that all of humanity can relate to and recognize themselves in it." The geopolitics of the bygone era mirrors what some people are still experiencing in 2025, Curtis noted. "As we look back to our past, we see our ancestors struggle with the very same things as our current situation in the world," he added. "To live in peace or live in war." The ensemble also includes Luciane Buchanan,Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale'o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka and Benjamin Hoetjes.
