Face-to-face programme flooded with requests for more Indiramma houses in Hyderabad
A majority of the people who came to the programme were from the state capital, with a few from neighbouring districts. The people urged Ponnam to sanction Indiramma houses and requested that he ask the chief minister to increase the quota of Indiramma houses for the poor in the city. The state govt sanctioned 3,500 Indiramma houses for each of the 119 assembly constituencies in the state in the first phase of the programme.
Speaking to TOI, Ponnam Prabhakar said there was a lot of demand for housing in Greater Hyderabad and the Congress govt was committed to ensuring that every eligible poor family gets an Indiramma house in a phased manner. "Lakhs of applications were received during the Praja Palana programme for the Indiramma housing scheme, but field-level inquiries and document verification by the officials revealed that only 18,000 families have house sites (land).

The minister received over 100 petitions, in addition to grievances and requests submitted orally to him during the face-to-face programme, which was revived after a few months. The programme was stopped midway without any reasons given, but sources in Gandhi Bhavan said it was due to MLC elections and other factors. It has been revived now after TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud spoke to the chief minister and also AICC in charge Meenakshi Natarajan.
The AICC in charge also participated briefly in the face-to-face session and interacted with the people about the problems they were facing in getting their grievances addressed by the officials.
Applications for jobs, loans for self-employment schemes, resolutions to land encroachments and disputes, new ration cards, inclusion of names on existing cards, allocation of pending allotment of 2-BHK houses, inclusion of names in the free electricity scheme, and other welfare programmes were submitted to the minister.
A delegation of the Telangana Udyama Karula Forum told TOI that they urged Ponnam Prabhakar to remind the TPCC president and the CM about the Congress election manifesto, which promised a house site and a monthly pension to those who fought for statehood. They urged Ponnam to speak to the CM and ensure that a committee is constituted to identify all such Udyama Karulu.
"It is not only about the monthly honorarium and house site, but mainly about acknowledgement that we fought and achieved statehood. The govt should give us a memento or certificate, which we will display in our houses and offices as a mark of pride and self-respect that we were at the forefront of the statehood agitation," said forum leader Taduri Gagan Kumar.

BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye posted the GR on X, stating: 'Aaditya Thackeray (Shiv Sena-UBT) and Jitendra Awhad (NCP-SP), who have been opposing the ban, should condemn Sharad Pawar (head of NCP-SP). Awhad and Thackeray were ministers in the Uddhav Thackeray government, which continued the ban, but uttered no word against it. I however have no doubt that deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, known for his command of the administration, would very well know that this decision is not by the Mahayuti government.' The row over meat ban erupted after the Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district directed the closure of meat shops on August 15, which was followed by civic bodies of Malegaon, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Nagpur.

Defamation case: Perjury plea filed against Rahul in defamation case
In the ongoing defamation case against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's grand-nephew Satyaki Savarkar, the complainant's counsel, advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, on Wednesday said they have filed a perjury application against the Congress leader for allegedly misleading the court. The reply from Gandhi's advocate is expected on September 10. (HT FILE) Kolhatkar, who represents complainant Satyaki Savarkar and moved the application before Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde on Wednesday, said Gandhi's legal team had earlier been provided with all relevant documents in the case. 'We had supplied the relevant copies to Rahul Gandhi's advocate Milind Pawar. He received them and signed before the court. Yet, Gandhi through his lawyer has blatantly denied receiving any such material from us. Gandhi is misleading the court. Since he holds a constitutional post as the Leader of the Opposition, we have strictly demanded that action be initiated against him,' he said. The reply from Gandhi's advocate is expected on September 10. The defamation case, filed by Savarkar — the grand-nephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar — pertains to remarks made by Gandhi in March 2023 in London, which the complainant alleges are false. Kolhatkar also commented on the recent 'pursis' filed by Gandhi's lawyer in a Pune court, which cited a threat to Gandhi's life from followers of Savarkar. Gandhi's legal team later said the filing had been made without his consent and would be withdrawn. 'A pursis is not an application; it is merely information given to the court. No court takes cognisance of it, but it becomes part of the record. At least from our side, in the Pune court, there is no threat. Such filings are a misuse of freedom and waste the court's time,' Kolhatkar said. The case is pending before a Pune court, where Gandhi has already been granted bail.

MUMBAI: The central government on Wednesday notified the appointment of advocate Aarti Sathe, former spokesperson of the Maharashtra BJP, and two others, as judges of the Bombay High Court. Centre notifies appointment of Aarti Sathe as HC judge 'In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Shri Ajit Bhagwanrao Kadethankar, (ii) Shri Sushil Manohar Ghodeswar and (iii) Ms Aarti Arun Sathe, to be Additional Judges of the Bombay High Court, in that order of seniority, for a period of two years, with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices,' the notification stated. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice (Appointments Division) issued the notification on Wednesday, a fortnight after the Supreme Court Collegium on July 28 recommended Sathe's appointment, along with the other two judges. Following this, opposition leaders in Maharashtra raised objections to Sathe's appointment, calling her elevation to the judiciary 'the gravest blow to democracy'. The appointment of three new judges has taken the strength of the high court to 69, against a sanctioned strength of 94. 'The appointment of a political figure raises doubts about the entire process of delivery of justice. It also undermines the principle of separation of power ensured by the Constitution,' NCP (SP) legislator Rohit Pawar had said, and demanded that the decision be reconsidered. Sathe said she had already resigned from the party, while the Maharashtra BJP pointed out that such an appointment had taken place during the Congress regime too. 'I had resigned from all political posts long before this. So that settles it. I don't want to respond to anything else,' said Sathe. The Congress's state unit president Harshwardhan Sapkal said that if someone who held an active position in a political party was appointed as a judge, her judgments could not be impartial. 'Democracy and the Constitution have been systematically sidelined in the country since 2014,' said Sapkal. 'All autonomous institutions are operating under government directives, even the Election Commission of India. But the most serious and worrying development is within the judiciary itself.' Responding to the controversy, the BJP said Sathe had resigned as party spokesperson from the post on January 6 last year, and had posted her resignation letter on social media. Sathe's legal practice has largely been in the field of direct and indirect taxes. She is an alumna of Government Law College, Mumbai. Her father, Arun P Sathe, is a BJP worker with an RSS background. He was BJP in-charge of the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh and was also associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena. Arun Sathe had unsuccessfully fought the Lok Sabha election as a BJP candidate in 1989, from Mumbai North-West constituency, against the Congress's Sunil Dutt. He is the elder brother of former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. A similar controversy took place when the central government appointed Arun Sathe to the board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in August 2015.
