65.2 lakh electors likely to be removed from electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar
Data released by the Election Commission on Friday, the last day for submitting enumeration forms, shows that of the 65.2 lakh voters, of which 22 lakh are dead, 35 lakh have permanently shifted outside Bihar, 7 lakh are enrolled as voters in more than one place and 1.2 lakh are yet to submit their forms.
The Election Commission (EC) said 99.8% of Bihar's electors have been covered under the SIR exercise, which began in the state on June 24. Out of 7.9 crore electors, enumeration forms of 7.23 crore electors have been received and digitised, and their names will be included in the Draft Electoral Roll scheduled to be published on August 1.
The EC said that renumeration forms of remaining 1.2 lakh electors are yet to received. The election body said the digitisation of enumeration forms, along with BLO reports, of the remaining electors will also be completed by August 1.
Eligible voters whose names are left out can still be added after filling the prescribed forms during the next phase of the process between August 1 and September 1, and parties can also file objections to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for the removal of ineligible voters, EC said.
In a statement, EC said that the lists of those electors who have not filled their enumeration forms or are deceased and those who have permanently shifted have already been shared with all 12 recognised political parties.
The political parties have collectively nominated 1,60813 BLAs so that errors, if any, can be rectified in the Draft Electoral Rolls to be published on August 1.
The parties include the Congress, which has nominated 17,549 BLAs (Booth Level Agents) and RJD with 47,506 BLAs. The other political parties which have been given the lists include BJP, BSP, CPM, JD(U), RLSP, CPI-ML (Liberation), RLJP, LJP(RV), NPP and AAP.
Sharing details of BLAs of some parties, EC said that the BJP has nominated the highest 53,338, JD(U) 36,550, RLSP 270, RLJP 1,913 and LJP(RV) 1,210.

Nuns Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis, as well as a third person identified as Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested from Durg railway station on July 25 following a complaint from a local Bajrang Dal functionary, who accused them of forcibly converting three girls from Narayanpur and trafficking them, a railway police official had said on Sunday.

Congress speaking the language of Pakistan: BJP on Chidambaram's remarks
The BJP on Monday (July 28, 2025) accused the Congress, including its senior leader P. Chidambaram, of 'speaking the language' of Pakistan on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. SIR challenge for the poll panel
The second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Bihar electoral roll will begin on August 1 once the Election Commission of India (ECI) publishes the draft document. The number of enumeration forms received for SIR suggests a fall of 6.5 million from the number of registered voters in Bihar as on June 24, the day before ECI launched the exercise, and also lower than the number of registered voters before the 2024 general election and even the 2020 assembly election. This number may fall further as the forms are scrutinised and the incomplete ones rejected. Except during the electoral roll revision in 2005, Bihar has never seen a decline in the voting population: The decline is intriguing considering the state's high fertility rate. ECI has attributed the decline to the deletion of the names of deceased persons, those with duplicate registration and migration, but this doesn't ring true. The poll body has promised that due process will be followed in the case of deletions from the roll; it must follow through for the sake of the credibility of SIR. The ECI, which has a stellar record in conducting elections, has come under scrutiny for potential overreach, and the Opposition has raised questions about its conduct. It has roiled the political atmosphere with the Opposition accusing the poll body of weaponising the electoral roll; the Rashtriya Janata Dal has threatened a poll boycott if its concerns are not addressed. Civil society bodies and politicians have challenged SIR in the Supreme Court, especially its choice of 11 documents to prove eligibility for inclusion in the roll and the refusal to include the Aadhaar card, existing voter identification card, and ration card among them. The challenge also involves the constitutional question of whether ECI's mandate extends to insisting that a prospective voter prove his/her citizenship. And ECI, which has a stellar record in conducting elections, has come under scrutiny for potential overreach, and the Opposition has raised questions about its conduct. In this backdrop, ECI's actions in the coming days will be keenly watched. The right to vote is a cherished right, especially for the poor and oppressed who consider it as the only weapon to demand accountability from the rulers; denial of this right, even if on technical grounds, is likely to be viewed with grief and anger. ECI must tread carefully and stay true to its mandate, which is conducting free and fair elections.
