The opposition has been protesting in both houses of Parliament against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at disenfranchising voters in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections.

Meghnad Desai, Indian-origin economist, dies at 85
Meghnad Desai, an India-origin economist and a member of the United Kingdom's House of Lords, passed away on Tuesday. He was 85. Born in Gujarat's Vadodara, Desai studied economics at the University of Mumbai before completing his PhD in economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He wrote and edited more than 20 books, along with over 200 articles for academic journals. Desai's early works focused on the Marxian way of thought, including his first book Marxian Economic Theory (1973), which was followed by Applied Econometrics (1976) and Marxian Economics (1979). In 1981, he wrote a critique on monetarism, an economic theory that emphasises the role of money supply in influencing economic activity and price levels. In 2014, Desai wrote the book Who Wrote The Bhagavadgita? He argued that some themes in the Hindu text 'reinforce social inequality and lack of concern for the other and to that extent he finds Gita to be toxic '. Desai taught at the London School of Economics from 1965 to 2003 and later became an emeritus professor. He was also a member of the House of Lords and a leader of the Labour Party. He served as the chairperson of the party between 1986 and 2002 and received the title of Baron in the City of Westminster in 1991. Desai resigned as a member of the Labour Party in 2020 over its alleged failure to tackle antisemitic racism within its ranks. In 2008, Desai was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to Desai's family and described him as a 'distinguished thinker, writer and economist'. Modi said on social media that the economist always 'remained connected to India and Indian culture' and played a role in deepening India-UK ties. Cong mulls statues of Mukesh Goud, Shiv Shankar to woo BCs in Hyd'bad
Hyderabad: In a move aimed at bolstering the momentum for 42% Backward Classes (BC) reservation and garnering support for the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election and GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) elections, the Congress party has decided to install statues of former BC Welfare Minister M Mukesh Goud and former Union Minister P Shiv Shankar within the city. The announcement was made by Congress leaders, including PCC (Pradesh Congress Committee) president B Mahesh Kumar Goud and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, on the death anniversary of Mukesh Goud. 'There remains a growing demand for the installation of statues of leaders representing BCs who served the city,' Mahesh Goud clarified to the media. 'We shall be installing the statues at a proper place after consulting with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.' Earlier, during an informal interaction with media persons, Ponnam Prabhakar also stated that a decision had been taken to install their statues in honour of their services to BCs and in recognition of their contributions to the party. 'Services of both leaders cannot be ignored, and in reflection of the recognition for their services, statues will be installed. A decision will be taken where and when these can be installed and will be finalised after discussing with the Chief Minister,' he said.

Ponnam dangles JH seat carrot for local candidate
Hyderabad: Hyderabad's In-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar today clarified that the Congress party will allocate the ticket for the Jubilee Hills by-election to a local candidate, stating that individuals from outside the constituency would not be considered this time. Speaking to media persons in the presence of cricketer-turned-politician Mohammad Azharuddin, Ponnam gave a clear indication that Azharuddin would contest once again from the key constituency. The Transport Minister affirmed that party cadres would work unitedly for the victory of whichever candidate is fielded by the party high command. He exuded confidence that the Congress party would hoist its flag in the Jubilee Hills constituency. The by-election for the Jubilee Hills seat was necessitated by the death of the sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath of the BRS. Gopinath, who had defeated his nearest rival, Azharuddin, by over 16,000 votes in 2023, died of cardiac arrest on June 8. Azharuddin, who also serves as PCC Working President, had earlier declared himself as a candidate amidst speculation that the party was unlikely to field him in the by-election. For Jubilee Hills, scores of party leaders are vying to contest. Besides Azharuddin, former Mayor BonthuRammohan, TMREIS chairman Md Faheemuddin Qureshi, former PCC working president Jetti Kusum Kumar, V Naveen Yadav (who contested from AIMIM in 2014), C Rohin Reddy (who recently contested from Amberpet), and numerous others are eyeing the ticket. Azharuddin, who recently attended the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting, has made his intentions clear that he is willing to contest once again from the Jubilee Hills constituency, despite his loss in the 2023 Assembly polls. Bonthu Rammohan, who had maintained a low profile until recent days following his failure to secure the Secunderabad MP ticket, is once again attempting to re-enter the limelight and claims to have a strong grip on constituents. His wife, Sridevi, the Cherlapally division corporator, is said to have a good support base in the constituency. Coming from the Kamma caste, Kusum Kumar had previously sought an MLC position, with his candidature also backed by former MLC T Jagga Reddy, citing the need for proper representation for Kammas.
