Behind the Music - Clare O'Malley
Irish singer-songwriter and actress Clare O'Malley has released a double A-side single, New Heights and Little Weirdo, from her upcoming debut EP. We asked her the BIG questions . . .
Clare has appeared in theatrical productions in New York City and The Abbey in Dublin and starred in films such as Creed. She was also a backing vocalist for Jedward at Eurovision in Azerbaijan in 2012.
Her grandmother, Mary O'Malley, founded the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, and her grandfather was renowned Irish poet Thomas Kinsella.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
It was only in the pandemic I turned to writing my own music; until then I had spent my career as an actor in either New York or Dublin, telling other people's stories. The first movie I acted in was Creed. I was Jedward's backing vocalist when they went to Eurovision in Azerbaijan.
How would you describe your music?
Nuggets of wisdom and gold on the right ears.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Sinéad O'Connor, Eva Cassidy, Carole King, Kacey Musgraves.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Britney Spears. I remember being deeply upset when I could see she was chewing gum and singing.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden - had it on repeat!
What's your favourite song right now?
I'm loving belting along to some Chappell Roan, especially Pink Pony Club. It's great for a road trip, or some Teddy Swims.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"I have often asked myself the reason for the sadness in a world where tears are just a lullaby." - Carole King.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Judy Garland.

THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969. Known as Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total. However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region. And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy. Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. New RTÉ series An Ghig Mhór pairs Irish musicians with up-and-coming talent
A new RTÉ series will pair established Irish musicians with up-and-coming talent as they put on their first hometown gig, with hip hop duo Tebi Rex, Kíla's Rónán Ó Snodaigh, and Cork singer songwriter John Spillane among the mentors. According to the show, "From the sitting room to the stage, the series follows the bands as they attempt to find a venue, sell tickets and deliver the performance of a lifetime. " An Ghig Mhór provides a platform to new emerging Irish bands and shines a light on the hard work, creativity and dedication that goes into putting on your own gig." From Donegal to Kilkenny, the series showcases a different town and band each week. Folk singer John Spillane will share his expertise with The Donnys, a five-piece rock band from Kilkenny. Singer-songwriter Eve Belle from Gaoth Dobhair, Donegal will work with fellow Gaoth Dobhair singer Hannah Mc Fadden, and her band Hannah B. Kíla's Rónán Ó Snodaigh will mentor band Leevy from the Múscraí Gaeltacht in Cork, who perform a blend of folk-rock and punk with traditional Irish undertones. Krea, a former member of Wyvern Lingo will guide all-female punk rockers The Hex from Lexlip, Kildare. Hip-hop duo Tebi Rex will mentor Conamara rock band Na hEasógaí. Finally, singer and guitarist Síomha will advise Coolboy, a four-piece rock band from Laois. Each band has their own unique sound and performs in English and Irish. Episode one of An Ghig Mhór will air on Monday 9 June, 8pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
