Behind the Music - Clare O'Malley
Irish singer-songwriter and actress Clare O'Malley has released a double A-side single, New Heights and Little Weirdo, from her upcoming debut EP. We asked her the BIG questions . . . Clare has appeared in theatrical productions in New York City and The Abbey in Dublin and starred in films such as Creed. She was also a backing vocalist for Jedward at Eurovision in Azerbaijan in 2012. Her grandmother, Mary O'Malley, founded the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, and her grandfather was renowned Irish poet Thomas Kinsella. Tell us three things about yourself . . . It was only in the pandemic I turned to writing my own music; until then I had spent my career as an actor in either New York or Dublin, telling other people's stories. The first movie I acted in was Creed. I was Jedward's backing vocalist when they went to Eurovision in Azerbaijan. How would you describe your music? Nuggets of wisdom and gold on the right ears. Who are your musical inspirations? Sinéad O'Connor, Eva Cassidy, Carole King, Kacey Musgraves. What was the first gig you ever went to? Britney Spears. I remember being deeply upset when I could see she was chewing gum and singing. What was the first record you ever bought? Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden - had it on repeat! What's your favourite song right now? I'm loving belting along to some Chappell Roan, especially Pink Pony Club. It's great for a road trip, or some Teddy Swims. Favourite lyric of all time? "I have often asked myself the reason for the sadness in a world where tears are just a lullaby." - Carole King. If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? Beloved Aussie musician reveals he ‘nearly died' after life-changing accident
Aussie musician Darren Hayes has revealed he had a brush with death in March after having an accident at his home when he fell unconscious multiple times while getting out of bed. The Savage Garden frontman, 52, revealed he suffered three fainting spells, where he lost consciousness each time, which caused him to fall and break his jawbone in half. As part of the trauma suffered by the accident, he also shattered nine teeth. Hayes shared the details of the accident in a confronting Instagram post. 'On March 17, two months to the day after my mother passed away, I had a terrible accident,' Hayes began. Darren Hayes has revealed he nearly died following a life-changing accident at his home. Credit: Instagram 'I've been trying to keep it private but my lengthy recovery period means it's easier to admit the truth. I lost consciousness — I fainted shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed three times, losing consciousness each time. 'The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half. I woke up in a pool of blood, terrible pain in the left side of my head and with nine teeth shattered. 'I'm so lucky I was found and taken to the amazing team at the emergency room of St John's Providence in Santa Monica, where they acted quickly. 'I could have died if I landed in a different position.' Hayes said the reason for the fainting spells were still a mystery. He has undergone neurological tests and tests on his heart. He said his surgeon was able to insert a titanium brace to reconnect his split jawbone. His mouth was wired shut for eight weeks, allowing his jawbone to heal. Hayes broke his jaw and shattered nine teeth after falling conscious multiple times. Credit: Instagram Hayes explained he had been suffering lightheadedness before the accident. He assured fans he was under the incredible care of a cardiologist and an oral surgeon. 'So far, my heart is normal, my arteries are normal, and I don't have a brain tumor or anything that could cause the accident,' he said. He added he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Hayes explained that rehab would be a long road to get his jaw function back. He would also need to replace his shattered teeth. Hayes finished by striking a positive note about his health journey. 'I'm so grateful to my loved ones for coming to my rescue and to the doctors and nurses that have treated me with such care,' he wrote. 'After surviving a brutal divorce, losing my mother, finding out my father had died and then this, I have moments of deep sadness. But I am a survivor and I'll come back strong.' Hayes were previously married to British screenwriter, Richard Cullen, from 2006 to 2024. He rose to fame in Aussie band Savage Garden, with a string of huge hits including 'Truly, Madly, Deeply', from 1993 to 2001. In 2022, he announced the Do You Remember? Tour, which went around six Australian cities, in early 2023.

The Truly Madly Deeply singer shared a photo of his swollen jaw and X-ray imagery on Instagram, explaining he had 'a terrible accident.' Hayes wrote in the caption that on March 17, exactly two months after his mother died, he 'lost consciousness – I fainted shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed 3 times, losing consciousness each time.' 'The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half. I woke up in a pool of blood, terrible pain in my left side of my head and with 9 teeth shattered.' The 52-year-old said he was 'so lucky' and thanked the medical team at St. John's Providence in Santa Monica. 'I could have died if I landed in a different position. They scanned for and ruled out heart issues and anything neurological.' Hayes underwent emergency reconstructive surgery and had a titanium brace inserted into his jaw followed by his mouth wired shut for eight weeks. The Australian-born singer said he had experienced some light-headedness and fainting spells before the incident, and the cause is being investigated by his medical care team. 'So far my heart is normal, my arteries are normal and I don't have a brain tumour or anything that could cause the accident,' he said, adding, 'No Judgement to those who partake but I do not take drugs or drink alcohol – this was a complete shock.' Hayes is one half of pop rock duo Savage Garden, with Daniel Jones on guitar and keyboards, known for late '90s hits like I Want You, Truly Madly Deeply and I Knew I Loved You. Savage Garden split in 2001, per Billboard, but Hayes continued his solo career. He thanked fans for understanding the reasons why he'll 'be out of action for quite some time.' 'After my jaw heals it's a long road to rehabbing my jaw function and then of course replacing my shattered teeth. I love you folks. I'm so grateful to be alive and every day I'm getting stronger.' Hayes revealed near the end of his post that not only had his mother recently died, but he also learned his father had died and he had just gone through a 'brutal divorce' from his husband of 17 years, Richard Cullen. According to People magazine, Hayes filed for divorce in 2023. 'I have had moments of deep sadness. But I am a survivor and I'll come back strong.' He also thanked everyone for their support, adding that he decided to share the news on social media because he had to cancel 'press and public things planned and I didn't want people to speculate.' 'I'm sure I'm gonna be fine – it's just time. Love you,' he added.
