Choo Hao Ren ( pic ) acknowledged that his actions, caught on video in a clip that went viral, were inappropriate and that he should have sung the national anthem solemnly and with respect.
Advertisement In a statement on his social media pages, Choo said he was deeply sorry for his actions and promised to act more appropriately in such settings. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh however called for punitive action against Choo for disrespecting the national anthem and the country. 'This is not a question of race or political party, but about how it's the responsibility of all Malaysians to respect this country. That's why we want such people to be punished severely,' he said in a Facebook post. 'It's not that we want to play up the issue, but the issue of respecting the country is more important,' the Melaka executive councillor added.

He apologised for the clip and took it down after receiving a backlash online. - FMT * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Wee tells Umno Youth chief to stop threats over Jalur Gemilang case

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong today told Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to stop issuing threats to "personally educate" a shop owner over an improperly hoisted national flag. In a Facebook post, the MCA president said he feared public intimidation of this kind would only backfire and make Malaysians "think twice" about proudly displaying the Jalur Gemilang. Referring to remarks by Dr Akmal, who yesterday threatened to hold a "class" for a hardware store owner in Penang if he was not charged by Thursday, Wee reminded the Umno Youth chief that the country is not run on "arbitrary deadlines set by politicians". "Respect for our national flag is not in question, but enforcement must follow the rule of law, not political ultimatums or personal threats. We do not run this country on arbitrary deadlines set by politicians. "Public intimidation of this kind will only backfire. Instead of encouraging more Malaysians to proudly display the Jalur Gemilang, it will make people think twice. "Why risk flying the flag if a mistake could turn into personal threats and self-incrimination?" he said. Wee added that leaders should inspire patriotism through education, example and lawful action, rather than playing the role of self-appointed enforcers. "Turning a flag mishap into a political stunt only divides us and distracts from the real work of nation-building. "Let the authorities do their job, and let us keep politics out of the flagpole," he said. On Aug 10, police arrested the 59-year-old man following reports lodged across the country. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin had said a total of 16 police reports had been received nationwide on the incident, with 12 lodged in Penang and four in other states. A clip of the man hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down went viral on social media today. The video, posted on Facebook, showed the man raising the national flag incorrectly while another individual recorded the incident.

LFL urges public to protect shop owner from Akmal, Wee slams threat

Lawyers for Liberty director Zaid Malek wants the public to join him at the Penang hardware store embroiled in a flag blunder controversy on Thursday to make a stand against Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh's planned protest that day. Meanwhile, MCA president Wee Ka Siong also rapped Akmal for turning a mishap, in which the Malaysian flag was displayed upside down, into a political stunt. Akmal yesterday said that if...

Zara's death exposes systemic failures: LDP

Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: 'This is not just about one child's death. It is about whether we are willing to confront systemic failures and take real action to ensure this never happens again,' Chin said. Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir exposed systemic failures in protecting children and delivering justice. 'This is not just about one child's death. It is about whether we are willing to confront systemic failures and take real action to ensure this never happens again,' said its President Chin Shu Ying. Advertisement The Attorney-General's Chambers has ordered the exhumation of Zara's remains for a fresh post-mortem examination, which LDP welcomed as important for establishing the truth and restoring public confidence. However, he said the incident must catalyse broader institutional reforms beyond a single investigation. The party called for the establishment of an independent investigation panel comprising legal experts, child protection advocates, medical specialists and civil society representatives to ensure impartial oversight. On school safety, it called for mandatory 24-hour warden coverage in all boarding facilities, closed-circuit television installation in common areas and secure access controls. It also advocated compulsory anti-bullying education programs and annual safeguarding training for educational staff as well as confidential reporting channels for students to raise concerns without fear of reprisal. The party's reform agenda extends to legislative changes, including strengthened laws imposing clear accountability on educational institutions for student safety and stricter penalties for negligence or cover-ups by responsible parties. Also mandatory public reporting of serious school incidents with accompanying action plans. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
