Raj e-scammers held for promising to reunite lovers, duping woman of Rs 16L
1 2 Mumbai: The city crime branch unmasked a pair of smooth-talking fraudsters from Rajasthan who allegedly preyed on heartbreak and hope, weaving an elaborate online scam that promised to reunite lost lovers by removing "obstacles"—for a price. Police said on Aug 1, a 52-year-old woman from south Mumbai lodged a complaint at Pydhonie police station. She reported that an intruder entered her home through a partially open door and stole 129gm of gold and nearly Rs 3.2 lakh in cash, totalling Rs 16.2 lakh. Pydhonie police registered an FIR of theft, and Unit 2 of the crime branch started a parallel probe. As crime branch unit 2 dug deeper, an unexpected twist emerged. They learned the complainant's daughter, recently estranged from her partner, stumbled upon an Instagram profile named 'Irfan Khanji', awash with alluring promises like "Lost love found in 24 hours" and "Get your love back." Drawn in by the hope of mending her relationship, she shared her number. Soon, she was contacted by a man posing as a cleric. The man convinced her that mystical rituals could dissolve the barriers to her romance—if she could provide the necessary items. His shopping list read like a treasure inventory: Silver pots, gold lamps, gold flies, potted plants, and even gold nails. Payments were funnelled into shadowy third-party bank accounts, and, in the final act, the accused travelled to Mumbai to collect the gold from her home. During the course of the investigation, police stumbled upon a few suspected mobile numbers with which the complainant was in touch. Police zeroed in on two numbers, found to be of men claiming to be spiritual gurus. "Based on technical analysis, when we questioned why she was in contact with these two men, and on sustained questioning, she broke down and narrated the real story. We traced the suspects to Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan and arrested Vikas Meghwal (22) and Manoj Nagpal (30)," said an officer. During interrogation, the duo confessed to the crime, and police recovered all stolen property—129gm of gold worth Rs 13 lakh and Rs 3.18 lakh in cash. Cops reportedly also found the accused similarly cheated women in Haryana and Delhi. Further, police noted the presence of gangs in Sri Ganganagar that sell Instagram accounts with followers, along with linked bank accounts and SIM cards, which are then used in fraud schemes. Activist alleges cruelty and searches for dog relocated from Bandra to Navi Mumbai
Navi Mumbai: Bandra-based social worker and animal activist, Shiraz Ahmad (38), has been driving daily to Sanpada in Navi Mumbai, shouting "Laila! Laila!" while searching for a community dog, Laila, who was relocated from a mall precinct in Bandra to Sanpada. While Ahmad also lodged an FIR against three pest control workers for animal cruelty, after getting incriminating electronic evidence by way of CCTV footage, he is still searching hard to find Laila in Navi Mumbai for the past two months. Ahmad, who is the founding director of Humanity World Foundation NGO, has also pasted large posters all around his vehicle stating "Justice For Laila" while continuing his search to find the lovable dog. "I lodged the FIR at the BKC police station on June 30, after acquiring clear CCTV footage that two pest control staffers -- Suraj Chauhan and Parvez -- were last seen sitting next to Laila at the Jio mall area, near the Bandra Family Court. The two accused also told a mall worker that they were there to take the dog away," said Ahmad. Salvi, who has a contract with the mall as a pest controller, has therefore also been booked in the FIR." The accused men have so far not given any logical reason why they illegally relocated Laila, and who ordered them to do so. "During questioning by the BKC police, the accused persons also revealed that they planned to relocate another dog called Tiger from the mall area. However, after I lodged the FIR against them, the other community dog, Tiger, is safe for now. It is sad and shocking as to why anyone would try to remove these friendly dogs," said Ahmad. He fears that someone from the mall asked the accused Salvi to remove the dogs. However, since there is no evidence against the mall management, police have so far only booked these three accused men. "I have also complained to the top executives of the mall about our missing dog, Laila. I don't even know whether she is alive or dead. It is ironic that this mall boasts of being 'pet friendly', but the street dogs near the mall are not safe," said Ahmad. BKC police applied animal cruelty sections 325 and 3(2) of the BNS, and section 11(1)(d) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. A cash award of Rs 25,000 has also been announced by Ahmad for anyone who can give specific information about the missing dog. Govt asks colleges, univs to set up Shaktishree cell by Aug 25
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The higher education department has asked colleges and state public universities to establish a 'Shaktishree empowerment cell' by Aug 25 and select a 'Shaktishree Sathi' (peer leader) by Aug 20 to ensure holistic safety and well-being of girl students on campuses. The two initiatives are part of the Shaktishree initiative launched by the state govt a few days ago to bring transformative empowerment and carry out self-defence programmes for all undergraduate and postgraduate girl students. Shaktishree initiative focuses on ensuring the holistic safety of female students — physical, legal, mental and digital — while safeguarding campuses of higher education institutes across the state. Higher education director Kaliprasanna Mahapatra said the cell will be established as a permanent, year-round body in all higher education institutes across the state. The student-led cell aims to promote security, empowerment and a safe environment for female students and staff.
