
Nestle unveils method to boost cocoa yields as climate change hits
Chocolate is traditionally made using only cocoa beans taken from inside the pod, meaning that a large amount of the fruit -- including the pulp, placenta and pod husk -- "remains largely unused", the Swiss food giant said.
Its researchers have "developed a patented technique that leverages all parts of the fruit inside the cocoa pod", it said.
Everything inside the pod is collected as a wet mass that then ferments naturally, "unlocking the key chocolate flavour", Nestle said.
"The mass is then ground, roasted and dried into chocolate flakes which can be used to make chocolate without compromising the taste."
Nestle said the approach cut down on waste while helping farmers get more yield and value.
"With climate change increasingly affecting cocoa yields around the world, we are exploring innovative solutions that could help cocoa farmers maximise the potential of their harvests," said Louise Barrett, head of the Nestle research and development centre for confectionery in York, England.

Cocoa prices had been stable for around 10 years but began to soar in early 2023.
A tonne of cocoa was worth £1,900 ($2,560) on the London commodities market in January 2023, shot up to £3,800 a year later, and reached a high of over £9,000 last December.
The surge was the result of poor harvests in the leading producers Ivory Coast and Ghana, as unusually heavy rains, a cocoa pod disease outbreak and then drought took their toll.
In February, a study by the Climate Central research group found that "excessive heat can contribute to a reduction in the quantity and quality of the harvest" for cocoa growers.
The report calculated that over the last decade, climate change had added an extra three weeks of above 32C in Ivory Coast and Ghana during the main growing season from October to March -- above the levels considered optimum for cacao trees.
The surge in prices dampened demand while also pushing farmers to devote more resources to cocoa cultivation.
That allowed prices to ease in recent months, with reserves being built up for the first time in four years.

Historic Swedish church on the move in logistical feat
With great fanfare, a historic red wooden church considered one of Sweden's most beautiful buildings began its slow move from its home in the Arctic town of Kiruna on Tuesday to allow the expansion of Europe's biggest underground mine. Kiruna's entire town centre is being moved because of the giant LKAB iron ore mine that dominates the region, whose ever-deepening burrowing over the years has weakened the ground, increasing the risk of collapse in some parts. Kiruna Kyrka, an imposing 672-tonne Swedish Lutheran church from 1912, is being moved five kilometres on remote-controlled flatbed trailers, inching along at a pace of half a kilometre an hour over two days to the new Kiruna town. The complex and costly logistical operation kicked off after a blessing by Bishop Asa Nystrom and Vicar Lena Tjarnberg, with the trailers' 220 wheels slowly pulling out under sunny blue skies. AFP | JONATHAN NACKSTRAND One of the trickiest parts of the meticulously choreographed journey was the start, officials said, with the 1,200-tonne convoy required to make a turn and roll down a slight incline to reach the main road it was to travel on. In preparation, the ground around the church had been dug out, allowing big yellow beams to be placed underneath so the building could be jacked up on the trailers. - 'Unique event' - The move has generated widespread interest, with more than 10,000 people expected to line the streets of the town of 18,000 people. King Carl XVI Gustaf was due to take part in the festivities in Kiruna. And Swedish television was broadcasting the entire journey live -- a new iteration of the "slow TV" trend -- with 30 cameras set up along the route. The town's relocation process began almost two decades ago and is expected to continue for years to come. The new town centre was officially inaugurated in September 2022. The relocation of the church alone is expected to cost 500 million kronor ($52 million) and is being paid for by LKAB. Designed by Swedish architect Gustaf Wickman, the imposing structure, which measures 40 metres tall, is a mix of influences and includes designs inspired by the region's Indigenous Sami people on the pews. LKAB has called the relocation "a unique event in world history". Other larger, heavier objects have been moved before, but usually in ports or industrial areas -- not through small towns. The roads on the route have been widened over the past year, from nine to 24 metres, and levelled to provide a smooth ride. - 'Not just any building' - Elisabeth Turq, a 66-year-old French tourist who travelled to Kiruna to follow the move, was in awe. "It's quite remarkable to be able to move such a building," she told AFP. Swedish Sami author Ann-Helen Laestadius, a Kiruna native best known for her novel "Stolen", which was made into a Netflix drama last year, said she had mixed feelings. "I'm glad the church is being moved... anything else would have been a scandal," she told SVT. "It's such a big part of Kiruna's soul. "I was baptised, confirmed and married in this church," she said. "This is not just any building, it's a church." Workers meticulously wrapped and protected both the church's large organ, with its more than 2,000 pipes, and altarpiece, painted by Sweden's Prince Eugen (1865-1947), a pastel landscape inspired by his trips to Italy's Tuscany and western Sweden. Fashionable eyewear devices could be the best at enabling AI adoption

Image: AFP The search for a perfect AI hardware is on and takes many forms. One of them comes in the form of eyewear products that are touted as the next outlet for rendering AI services. Tech companies have tried eyewear devices, however, they were lacking in style and game changing technology. This time around many have improved on the looks and technology. The Meta RayBan collaboration is one of the great examples of merging technology and fashion. It is packed with AI that features technology in ways we've not seen before. In June this year, Xiaomi officially entered the smart glasses market with the launch of its first AI-powered eyewear, positioning itself as a rival to Meta's Ray-Ban collaboration. The glasses are powered by Xiaomi's XiaoAI assistant, enabling users to perform a range of tasks via voice command, including capturing video and photos, recognizing objects, translating text, and scanning QR codes for mobile payments via Alipay. The device has capability to handle first-person video calls and live streaming. Xiaomi's entry into smart eyewear follows similar moves by other major Chinese firms. Huawei introduced its latest AI glasses in April, which feature voice and translation tools but lack a camera. Baidu is preparing to release its own camera-equipped Xiaodu AI glasses later this year, powered by its Ernie AI models. The eyewear space is getting crowded quickly. It also signals a move from smartphones to other form factors that may dominate in future. This move is also one of the most promising for AI adoption. It will enable natural use of AI in our daily lives. According to a report by Counterpoint the global smart glasses market saw shipments more than double in the first half of the year, driven mostly by strong demand for Meta Platforms' glasses, along with new offerings from rising competitors like China's Xiaomi. The report indicates that the 110% year-on-year surge in shipments was fuelled by robust interest in the artificial intelligence glasses segment, which accounted for 78% of total smart frame shipments. We are now beginning to see innovations that may transform the spectacles market as well. Recently, Finnish startup IXI has been quietly crafting high-tech specs for more practical purposes. Founded in 2021, the company emerged from stealth in April with $36 million in funding to commercialise what it claims are the world's first autofocus glasses. The prescription specs promise to change the way visually-impaired people see the world around them. This is a space to watch and may be a relief from a world that is dominated by smartphones.
