Nilambur scene turns murkier as Anvar prepares to contest
The electoral scene in Nilambur Assembly constituency, which goes to the polls on June 19, turned murkier with All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) State convener P.V. Anvar changing his stance and deciding to contest.
Sources close to Mr. Anvar said that he would be contesting under the AITC banner. However, some others indicated that Mr. Anvar's move would be the last-ditch effort to pressure the United Democratic Front (UDF).
UDF chairman and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said that there would not be any more talks with Mr. Anvar. 'We have closed all doors of discussion as Mr. Anvar stuck to his stand of opposing the UDF candidate in Nilambur,' said Mr. Satheesan.
However, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph said that the doors were closed for the time being. 'No doors are permanently closed in politics,' he said.
Mr. Joseph said that the electoral battle in Nilambur would be completely political, and not personal. He said the UDF would win comfortably even if Mr. Anvar contests. 'Nilambur is going to be an anti-Government verdict,' he said.
Youth Congress State president Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, visited Mr. Anvar at his Edavanna house on Saturday (May 31, 2025) night and persuaded him to change his stand.
Mr. Mamkootathil said that he had requested Mr. Anvar not to take any decision emotionally. Rather, he said, Mr. Anvar should support the UDF in the fight against Pinarayism. 'I told Mr. Anvar not to miss the objective,' he said.
Meanwhile, the UDF chairman described Mr. Mamkootathil's visit to Mr. Anvar as a mistake. 'The UDF did not entrust him to visit and talk to Mr. Anvar. He should not have done it,' said Mr. Satheesan.
But he said the UDF would not seek any explanation from the Youth Congress chief. 'I will chastise him when I meet him. He is like my younger brother. I can do that,' said Mr. Satheesan.

IUML enlists Panakkad family support for Shoukath's campaign
In a bid to quell criticism that the Panakkad Syed Shihab Thangal family was keeping their distance from Aryadan Shoukath over his past remarks against them, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has enlisted the family's support to campaign for the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate in Nilambur. IUML district president Syed Abbasali Shihab Thangal, the youngest brother of the late Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal and current party supremo Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, campaigned for Mr. Shoukath in Nilambur on Tuesday. Criticism had emerged from certain quarters about the absence of any Panakkad Syed family member at the UDF's inaugural convention in Nilambur on Monday, in which most top leaders of the front had attended. Despite prominent IUML leaders like P.K. Kunhalikutty, P.V. Abdul Wahab, M.K. Muneer, M.P. Abdussamad Samadani, P.M.A. Salam, and K.P.A. Majeed attending the convention, the absence of any Thangal sparked a debate among UDF critics. Nilambur By-Election Turns Into A High-Profile Four-Cornered Electoral Battle

The bye-election in Nilambur, located in the Malappuram district and part of the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, is set for June 19, with votes to be counted on June 23. This marks the third by-election in the six-decade history of this Assembly seat. The first two by-elections are notable. The initial one in 1967 was prompted by the assassination of sitting MLA K Kunhali, a CPM leader. It remains the only instance of an MLA being murdered in Kerala. The second by-election occurred in 1980 following the resignation of CH Haridas, a Congress leader who had been elected as part of the CPM-led LDF. He stepped down just 10 days after being elected to allow his party colleague, Aryadan Muhammad, to become an MLA and a state minister. For the first time in Kerala, four parties — the ruling CPI(M) and Congress, the BJP and All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) — are contesting an Assembly by-election and have also put forward prominent candidates. PV Anvar, whose resignation in January led to the by-election, was a Trinamool candidate. Anvar, a businessman-politician, won the seat in 2016 and 2021 as an LDF-backed Independent and was known for his close ties with CM Pinarayi Vijayan. However, he began to level various allegations against the Chief Minister and his office. After resigning, Anvar indicated support for the Congress-led UDF and claimed he would not contest the by-election. Despite his efforts to join the UDF, Congress selected his rival Aryadan Shoukath, whom Anvar had defeated in 2016, as their candidate. Aryadan Shoukath, a politician and screenwriter, is the son of veteran Congress leader Aryadan Muhammad, who served as an MLA and minister multiple times. M Swaraj, a former MLA and CPI(M) state secretariat member, will contest as the LDF candidate. This is the first time in 16 years that a candidate will run under the CPI(M) symbol in this seat. On the final day for filing nominations, the BJP announced Mohan George, a lawyer newly affiliated with the party and formerly associated with Kerala Congress factions, as their candidate. The revised final electoral roll lists 2,32,384 voters in the constituency, comprising 1,13,486 men, 1,18,889 women, and 9 transgender persons, along with 374 overseas (NRI) voters.
