SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Mike Bibby and Shaquille O'Neal are going to be mixing it up again, all these years later.
No more Kings-Lakers rivalry or on-court trash talk. Now, it's Bibby the college coach and O'Neal the student-athlete father.

Good thing they get along great these days — because Shaq's son, Shaqir, verbally committed to play for Bibby in the former Kings star's new position as head coach at Sacramento State.
'Me and Shaq have a good relationship. It probably wasn't good when we were playing against each other,' Bibby said with a grin when formally introduced at the school Tuesday. 'There was a lot of try to get a rivalry going, try to make it big time in the league.'
Don't be surprised if more NBA players' sons wind up in California's capital with one of the most beloved stars to come through the Sacramento franchise. Bibby's phone hasn't stopped ringing since he was hired last week to take over the program. He doesn't even have time anymore to take his daily naps.
The 46-year-old Bibby is ready to lead the Hornets back into contention in the Big Sky Conference right away after they finished 7-25 last season.

'How awesome is this, look at our new head coach,' athletic director Mark Orr said. 'Today's introduction of Coach Bibby marks a successful turn of events here at Sacramento State over the last couple years. Our university is certainly on the rise.'
Bibby retired in 2012 and has had various coaching jobs since. He won five state titles and coached 25 players who received college scholarships in six seasons as coach at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix. He also has been an assistant for the Puerto Rican National Team, summer league teams for Cleveland and Memphis, and the NBA G-League Ignite.
'Mike isn't just a basketball legend, he's a Sacramento legend,' Sacramento State President Dr. Luke Wood said. "The city embraced him during his NBA years and he's returning that love by choosing to lead our program. He understands the spirit of this place, the grit, the underdog mentality, the pride and determination and he's ready to build something that's special right here at Sacramento State. With Coach Bibby at the helm we are raising the bar.'
Orr said he received inquiries about the job from NBA-level coaches on down, 'and I kept coming back to one of the greatest basketball minds that this city has ever seen. He loves this community and wants to be here.'

And Bibby wants to leave a lasting mark and build something special here. He knows the student-athletes will look to him as an example of someone who has been at the top.
'I'm not satisfied with just being here. I don't want to let the city down and I'm going to do my hardest not to," Bibby said. "These kids are trying to get to where I've been, and why not get it from someone that's been there before?'
Bibby won an NCAA championship as a player at Arizona in 1997 and then starred in the NBA for 14 seasons, with his most successful stint coming during seven seasons with the Kings. He helped Sacramento reach Game 7 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals before losing to O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Bibby's players can't wait to get going.

'He's a legend, and I think the city needs somebody that's going to reflect it culturally,' senior guard EJ Neal said. 'He's an icon in Sacramento.'
Bibby is ready to teach — 'Everything has to be precise. We do it hard or we do it again."
He plans to schedule top non-conference opponents — 'They'll overlook us.'
He has no doubt the Hornets will win immediately — 'I have plans of taking this conference by storm.'
'Having a coach come in here to teach us and to try and push us and hold us accountable so we can get better and get to that position where he was I think is the biggest thing,' senior forward Jalen Pitre said.

Even with all of that confidence and swag, Bibby was clearly a bit emotional and overcome by this full-circle moment.
'I'm lost for words right now, I'm nervous as you guys can tell,' Bibby said. 'I'm just ready, I've been ready for this for a long time.'

Knicks head coaching search: Updates, latest news as New York is denied permission to interview Jason Kidd, Quin Snyder and others
The New York Knicks are still on the prowl for their next head coach after turning heads with the firing of Tom Thibodeau on June 3. Yahoo Sports is tracking the team's search; here's what's developed thus far: A stuttering search so far... Thibodeau resuscitated the Knicks in 2020 after seven straight losing seasons. He eventually led them to back-to-back 50-win campaigns and, ultimately, their first Eastern Conference finals appearance since 2000. Advertisement Whoever the Knicks hire next will be expected to one-up Thibodeau's accomplishments and lead New York to its first NBA championship since 1973. That's quite the ask, and the Knicks are still trying to find a candidate they think can reach it — and who can actually meet to talk about the job. The Knicks have already been denied permission to interview Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch, Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka and the Atlanta Hawks' Quin Snyder by their respective teams, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Kidd had the Mavericks in the NBA Finals last season and the Western Conference finals two seasons before that. Finch just guided the Timberwolves to their second straight Western Conference finals appearance. And Udoka ended a four-year playoff drought for the Houston Rockets this season — by a wide margin, too, as the Rockets secured the No. 2 seed in the West before suffering a first-round playoff exit. Advertisement Former Villanova head coach Jay Wright reportedly told the Knicks last week that he wouldn't be interested in the vacancy. Notably, Wright coached three of New York's current starters — Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges — while leading Villanova to two national championships in three years (Hart was there for the first title, Brunson and Bridges were there for both). The firing of Tom Thibodeau... Thibodeau was fired on June 3, three days after the Knicks' best playoff run in 25 years came to an end. New York lost to the red-hot, run-and-gun Indiana Pacers in six games, and Thibodeau was suddenly out. The Knicks had previously knocked the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics out of the playoffs and, prior to that, fought tooth and nail to hold off the upstart Detroit Pistons in another six-game series. Advertisement Following Thibodeau's firing, Knicks President Leon Rose said in a statement that the move is what "we feel is best for our organization moving forward," though he did thank Thibodeau for everything he poured into the organization and his on-court success. Tom Thibodeau was fired by the Knicks despite helming their return to relevance over the last few seasons. (Photo by) (Gregory Shamus via Getty Images) Why this was surprising... Thibodeau's firing followed a breakthrough season for the Knicks. He guided them to 51 regular-season wins in 2024-25 — their most in 12 years — and an inspiring playoff run, in part fueled by the fourth-quarter magic of Jalen Brunson and a string of gritty-not-pretty efforts from star center Karl-Anthony Towns. Advertisement Thibodeau's Knicks also hit the 50-win mark last season and won a playoff series for the second year in a row. They hadn't notched back-to-back 50-win seasons since they won 50-plus games in four straight seasons from 1991-95. The 67-year-old Thibodeau earned his second NBA Coach of the Year honor in 2020-21, his debut season with the Knicks, after leading them to their first winning record and playoff appearance since 2012-13. During Thibodeau's five-year stay in New York, his Knicks had one losing season, and that came in 2021-22 when they went 37-45 and missed the playoffs. He previously served as head coach of the Chicago Bulls (2010-15) and Minnesota Timberwolves (2016-19). Thibodeau has a career head coaching record of 578-420 (.579). He has yet to win an NBA championship as a head coach; he won a title as the Celtics' associate head coach in 2008. Since Thibodeau signed an extension with New York in 2024, the Knicks still owe him at least $30 million as part of that deal, SNY's Ian Begley reported last week. Even though a few big names appear out of the running, the Knicks will still have options in their coaching search. Whether those options are, or will be, upgrades over Thibodeau is certainly up for debate. Advertisement It's important to note the possibility of someone like Kidd, despite being denied an interview opportunity, trying to force his current team's hand, if he in fact wants to coach elsewhere. But coaching trades, which are quite rare, usually demand draft compensation. The Knicks could also go the route of hiring of a former head coach such as Michael Malone, Mike Budenholzer or even Jeff Van Gundy. Malone was fired by Denver before this year's playoffs after piloting the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA championship in 2023, and is the franchise's all-time winningest head coach. Budenholzer struggled in his two seasons with the Phoenix Suns, except his 2021 NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks isn't far in the rear-view mirror — he's also a two-time NBA Coach of the Year (once with the Bucks and once with the Atlanta Hawks). Van Gundy is currently a lead assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers and hasn't held a head coaching position since 2007. That said, he's the last Knicks coach to get the franchise to the NBA Finals. Advertisement The New York Post reported last week that Luke Walton and Mike Brown have also been mentioned as names to watch. Walton, now a lead assistant for the Detroit Pistons, posted a 166-241 (.408) record as a full-time head coach across his stints with the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. Unlike Walton, Brown got the Kings to the playoffs. He did so in 2022-23, his first season with the organization. Brown, who notably coached LeBron James during his first go-around in Cleveland, was fired by the Kings 31 games into this season. Additionally, The Athletic listed former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins, former Lakers head coach Darvin Ham and former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego as potential candidates of interest. Bo Melton's team-first approach has Packers believing he could thrive as a two-way player
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay's Bo Melton still considers himself a wide receiver first and foremost even as he spends part of the Packers' minicamp working out at cornerback. Melton also isn't about to make any comparisons to Jacksonville Jaguars rookie receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, who proved his credentials as a two-way player while winning the Heisman Trophy at Colorado last season. Advertisement But he's more than happy to test himself out in this role. 'It's just something that came up,' Melton said Wednesday. 'I want to give it a shot. I'm still a wide receiver, so I'm not really transitioning to cornerback, but if it works, it works.' The 26-year-old Melton started giving cornerback a chance as the Packers opened their minicamp Tuesday, one day after Green Bay released two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. The idea of testing Melton out on defense actually came up long before that. Melton said it started shortly after the Packers signed Melton off the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad in December 2022. Melton hasn't played defense since high school — he says he worked out on defense early in his college career at Rutgers before getting assigned to receiver — but the Packers like the tackling ability he has shown on special teams. Advertisement 'Coach (Matt) LaFleur came up and asked me, 'Would you ever think about doing it?'' Melton said. 'I was like, 'If it's going to help the team, I might as well,' you know what I mean? That's my motto since I've been here. I'm a team-first guy.' The scenario still caught his teammates by surprise. Packers cornerback Carrington Valentine said he wasn't aware of the possibility until Melton joined the defensive players in Tuesday's practice. Melton insisted he told his teammates this might be happening, but nobody believed him. Melton's younger brother — Arizona Cardinals cornerback Max Melton — also was stunned. Bo Melton didn't tell his brother about it, so Max learned only after he went on social media Tuesday and saw evidence of Bo backpedaling like a cornerback. Advertisement 'I'm like, 'What the hell?' … It's just shocking. I'm still in shock,' Max Melton said from the Cardinals' minicamp. Max did say that he believes his brother can succeed as a cornerback. Bo agrees that this can work but realizes it will take time. That became apparent when a reporter brought up Hunter's name during Melton's time with reporters Wednesday. 'Travis is a different athlete, as everybody knows,' Melton said. 'He's a Heisman Trophy winner, won a lot of awards. I'm not going to compare myself to somebody that's done that. But what I will say is I like to run for days.' He also possesses a work ethic that has enabled him to stick on an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent. Advertisement Melton was on Green Bay's practice squad late in the 2023 season when the Packers activated him for a critical game against the Minnesota Vikings. He caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in Green Bay's 33-10 victory. The Packers signed him to their active roster shortly afterward, and he caught a touchdown pass in a playoff loss at San Francisco. He played all 17 games for the Packers last season as a reserve receiver and special teams contributor. 'I just love everything about the guy, how he shows up every day ready to compete and give his best effort,' LaFleur said. The Packers are set with Keisean Nixon, Valentine and Nate Hobbs as their top three cornerbacks following Alexander's departure, but they lack proven players behind them. Any contribution Melton could provide would add depth while increasing his value. Advertisement 'It's just a feel thing right now,' Melton said. 'I still don't know if it's going to be true or not. Coach Matt, we'll figure that out. When I meet with Coach, we'll see what's going on. Right now I'm just going to go train for wideout. I feel like that's where I thrive at, that's where I make plays at. And defense, if it comes, it comes.' Valentine likes what he's seen so far. 'He's been embracing it,' Valentine said. 'I've been trying to show him the ropes a little bit. Give him some DB 101. But he looks natural to me.' Melton believes he can thrive in both spots. His younger brother is eager to find out, even as he gets ready for his own season about 1,800 miles away from Green Bay. Perhaps those cornerback skills run in the family. Advertisement 'I'm looking forward to seeing how it unfolds, to be honest,' Max Melton said. 'I'm just excited.' ___ AP Sports Writer David Brandt in Tempe, Arizona, contributed to this report. ___ AP NFL:
