NEW DELHI, India, Aug 2: Football fans in Kolkata may soon catch a glimpse of football legend Lionel Messi after ten years, as Kolkata ('City of Joy') is expected to be the first stop on his highly anticipated India tour. The Argentine icon's journey will span Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, culminating in a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sources close to the event confirmed to PTI that all arrangements, including the booking of Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, are in place. However, official confirmation from Messi himself is awaited, expected via his social media channels soon.
According to the tentative itinerary, Messi will arrive in Kolkata late on December 12, around 10 PM, and stay for two days — the longest stop on his whirlwind tour.
Kolkata leg: Statue unveiling and GOAT Cup
Messi's day in Kolkata on December 13 will begin at 9 AM with a meet-and-greet event, followed by the unveiling of a 70-foot statue of the football star at Lake Town Sribhumi on VIP Road. Organisers say this will be the tallest statue of the World Cup winner anywhere in the world.
Later, Messi will head to Eden Gardens for the GOAT Concert and GOAT Cup from 12 noon to 1:30 PM. The GOAT Cup will feature a seven-sided softball, soft-touch game with Indian sports and entertainment personalities such as Sourav Ganguly, Leander Paes, John Abraham, and Bhaichung Bhutia.
'It will be a celebration of Messi's legacy and a masterclass session with kids,' a source explained. The event will be ticketed, with prices expected to start around Rs 3,500, and the venue can hold up to 68,000 spectators. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also expected to felicitate Messi during the Eden Gardens event.
Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi: Packed itinerary
On the evening of December 13, Messi is slated to travel to Ahmedabad for a private event hosted by the Adani Foundation at their Shantigram headquarters.
December 14 will see Messi in Mumbai for a meet-and-greet at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) at 3:45 PM, followed by the GOAT Concert and GOAT Cup at Wankhede Stadium from 5:30 PM. Contrary to media speculation, Messi will not participate in a cricket match with MS Dhoni or Virat Kohli. Instead, he will play only in a softball game alongside Indian celebrities. He is also scheduled to interact with the Indian football team, including captain Sunil Chhetri.
On December 15, Messi will arrive in New Delhi for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will then participate in the GOAT Concert and GOAT Cup at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium at 2:15 PM.
Masterclasses and more
At each city stop, Messi is expected to conduct football masterclasses aimed at inspiring young Indian players. These sessions will last around 30 to 40 minutes and include interaction with children and budding footballers.
The source also clarified that there will be no events planned in Kerala, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.
Messi is anticipated to travel with a large entourage, including footballers, though specific details remain under wraps.
A glimpse back: Messi's first visit in 2011
Messi last visited India in August 2011, arriving in Kolkata to play an exhibition match against Venezuela at Salt Lake Stadium. The match was won 1-0 by Messi's team and sparked 'Messi fever' across the city, with thousands of fans flocking to see the star.
Messi Mania 2.0: The itinerary

Booker Prize winner Kiran Desai is up for the award again with a long-awaited novel

LONDON, July 31, (AP): Indian author Kiran Desai, who won the Booker Prize and then didn't publish a novel for almost two decades, is up for the award again with her long-awaited follow-up. "The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny,' the 677-page tale of two young Indians making their way in the United States, is one of 13 books announced Tuesday as semifinalists for the prestigious 50,000-pound ($67,000) prize. The contenders include authors from nine countries on four continents. It's Desai's first novel since "The Inheritance of Loss,' which won the Booker in 2006. Two previous finalists are up for the prize again: U.K. writer Andrew Miller, for "The Land in Winter,' and Hungarian-British writer David Szalay for "Flesh.' Tash Aw, who has been a semifinalist twice before, will be the first Malaysian winner if he takes the prize for "The South.' Five of the contenders are from Britain: Miller, Szalay, Natasha Brown ("Universality'), Jonathan Buckley ("One Boat') and Benjamin Wood ("Seascraper'). Books by U.S. writers in the running include Susan Choi's "Flashlight,' Katie Kitamura's "Audition' and Ben Markovits' "The Rest of Our Lives.' Also on the list are "Misinterpretation' by Albanian-American Ledia Xhoga, "Love Forms' by Trinidad's Claire Adam, and "Endling,' a debut novel by Canadian-Ukrainian opera librettist Maria Reva. "The 13 longlisted novels bring the reader to Hungary, Albania, the north of England, Malaysia, Ukraine, Korea, London, New York, Trinidad and Greece, India and the West Country,' said Irish novelist Roddy Doyle, chair of a five-member judging panel that includes actor Sarah Jessica Parker. "All, somehow, examine identity, individual or national, and all, I think, are gripping and excellent,' he said. Founded in 1969, the Booker Prize has a reputation for transforming writers' careers and is open to novels from any country published in the U.K. and Ireland. Last year's winner was "Orbital,' by British writer Samantha Harvey. A list of six finalists will be announced Sept. 23, and this year's winner will be crowned on Nov. 10 at a ceremony in London.

King Charles salutes Lionesses after England's historic Euro glory

Kelly's winning kick sparks jubilant celebrations LONDON: King Charles III led the tributes to England's history-making Lionesses after they won the Women's Euro 2025 title in a dramatic final against Spain on Sunday. Sarina Wiegman's side held their nerve to survive a tense penalty shoot-out as Chloe Kelly scored the decisive spot-kick in Basel after two crucial saves from Hannah Hampton. Alessia Russo's second-half equalizer had revived England's bid to retain the Euro title after Mariona Caldentey's 25th minute opener for Spain. Kelly's winning kick sparked jubilant celebrations across England, while the Prince of Wales and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined the party in the stands at St Jakob-Park. Prince William celebrated with his daughter Princess Charlotte before congratulating England's players on the pitch. 'What a game! Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe and we couldn't be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment England,' William and Charlotte said in a joint statement on X. England's 3-1 shoot-out victory avenged their 2023 Women's World Cup final loss against Spain in Australia. King Charles saluted Wiegman's team for their cathartic win, and immediately set their next target as he urged them to win the World Cup in 2027. 'This brings you, your manager and all your support team my most heartfelt congratulations on winning the Euros 2025,' the King wrote on social media. 'For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant 'football's coming home'. 'As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true. For this, you have my whole family's warmest appreciation and admiration. 'Well done, Lionesses. The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can!' Starmer congratulated the Lionesses on making history with the second of their back-to-back Euro crowns. They are the first senior English national football team to win a major tournament on foreign soil. 'You've made the nation proud' England's men won the 1966 World Cup at home and the Lionesses clinched the Women's Euro at Wembley in 2022. 'Champions! Congratulations Lionesses - what a team. What a game. What drama,' Starmer said on X. 'You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers.' While Kelly and company earned the silverware in Switzerland, back home street parties, pubs and bars were filled with England fans cheering their team to victory. Tower Bridge was lit up in red and white after the match, while supporters, watching on big screens at Boxpark Croydon in south London, erupted when Kelly scored her penalty. Ecstatic fans danced on benches, waved England flags and threw drinks into the air after the ball hit the net. England supporter Marina Nelson, 32, told AFP: 'Just elated. All this whole tournament we've always found a way to win. But Spain are a different kettle of fish, we're English right, we're pessimistic, so to win is like... never doubt the girls for one second!' Kate Harley, 28, added: 'Incredible, I mean, it can't get any better. Back-to-back wins, Chloe Kelly doing it again. Amazing.' The Football Association said a victory parade in London on Tuesday would feature an open-top bus parade along the Mall before a ceremony outside Buckingham Palace. 'Our history-making Lionesses are champions of Europe for the second successive time, and have become the first England Senior team in history to win a tournament overseas,' FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said. 'We are so proud of all of the players, Sarina and the support team who have all been part of this incredible achievement. 'They have all worked unbelievably hard and we know the nation shares our pride. The victory celebration in London on Tuesday will give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players, and be part of history.' — AFP
