From The Voice to Broadway, this Louisiana native landed in the Tony Awards 2025 most-nominated musical
First rising to popularity in his debut on NBC's The Voice, this star is keeping his hometown on the entertainment map.
March 1, 2025, the Tony Awards released their list of nominations, and among them is a show featuring Louisiana's top talent.
Dez Duron, from Shreveport, appears in the musical Maybe Happy Ending a touching and heartfelt play that received 10 nominations at the 2025 Tony Awards. Tying Buena Vista Social Club for most nominations in this year's program.
Duron first rose to musical popularity when he swept through the competition on NBC's hit show The Voice, charming the audience with his voice and charisma, reaching the top 8 before being eliminated.
Growing up in Shreveport, Dez attended Evangel Christian Academy, where he graduated as valedictorian. As quarterback of his high school team, he led the team to two state championships and one runner-up finish, and was named Louisiana's 2008-2009 Gatorade Player of the Year.
But even with all of his athletic accomplishments, he always had a heart for music.
His father is the pastor at Shreveport Community Church, where Duron found his love for music and singing early in his childhood.
This is what set the path leading him to Broadway.
In Maybe Happy Ending, Dez plays Gil Brentley, the fictional jazz character from the past that brings comfort and emotion to the main characters, who, in a charming twist…happen to be robots. Brentley represents all of the emotions that the robots just can't quite put into words.Duron even performed as Brentley on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, introducing audiences across the country to the soulful character.
While Dez did not receive any individual nominations, being part of a highly nominated show is a significant achievement.
The show went to Broadway on November 12, 2024, and you have an opportunity to catch the show in New York until it leaves the stage January 18, 2026.
The Tony Awards will air on CBS on June 8, 2025, where everyone in Louisiana can root for Dez and the rest of the cast.

Audra McDonald speaks out after she says a fan followed her home
Broadway star Audra McDonald is giving her account of what happened with an overzealous fan. It's leading to a larger conversation on safety and etiquette. The revival of the musical "Gypsy" has ended its powerhouse run on Broadway, but not before McDonald, its star, had an uncomfortably close encounter with an overly determined fan. McDonald took to social media to call out the behavior of a woman who found the Tony winner as she exited the theater over the weekend from a door other than the stage door. "And followed me all the way to where I was staying," McDonald said. "It's not right." McDonald said she got some security to assist her, but the woman persisted. "[The woman's] response was, hey, I've came all the way, and felt that they deserved an autograph, and that is crossing a big old boundary," McDonald said. McDonald explained why she didn't greet fans at the stage door during the run of "Gypsy," which closed on Sunday. She said she needed to conserve her voice and get home quickly to her child. She said people should give actors space and respect when they're done with a performance and leaving the theater. If they don't stop, leave them alone," McDonald said. "There is a reason that they're not stopping, and it has nothing to do with you. It's them protecting their space and peace, whatever that may be." Back in May, actor Bob Odenkirk told CBS News New York some expect stars to interact with fans, which he did while he was on Broadway recently in the revival of "Glengarry Glen Ross." He said at times he wondered if it was wise. "I have to stay healthy," Odenkirk said. "I should probably wear a mask." Lea Salonga wore one for a short time when starred in Stephen Sondheim's "Old Friends." She was getting over an illness. "Knowing how to negotiate a show without panic, without anxiety," Salonga said. For Broadway actors, being followed on social media may be fine, but being followed home is never OK.

Jillian Michaels goes nuclear on Bob Harper and Netflix's Biggest Loser docuseries: ‘This is false'
Jillian Michaels has broken her silence on Netflix's Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser, refuting claims made in the new docuseries, and is reportedly planning legal action. Michaels, 51, alongside Bob Harper, 60, was one of the personal trainers on the NBC reality show, which aired from 2004 to 2016, following obese people as they attempted to lose weight as quickly as possible using only diet and exercise for a $250,000 cash prize. Michaels, especially, was known for her ruthless attitude towards contestants during workouts, which is put under scrutiny in Netflix's documentary featuring interviews from past contestants. While Harper was involved and interviewed as part of the series, Michaels declined. In the documentary, Michaels's 2013 controversy, when producers accused her of breaking the rules by giving her team caffeine pills without a doctor's permission, is revisited. Elsewhere, Harper tells the cameras that Michaels never reached out to him after he suffered a massive, near-fatal heart attack in 2017. On Tuesday, Michaels turned to Instagram to share alleged email and text chains between herself, The Biggest Loser producers, and Harper. 'This is one email of many that shows: Dr. Huizenga did approve caffeine pills on many seasons of Biggest Loser, Bob Harper not only knew about the caffeine pills the 'stackers fat burner' were actually his suggestion. I wanted to use my brand instead because they were cleaner and had no more than 200mg of caffeine (equivalent to a strong cup of coffee). Caffeine was NEVER banned on The Biggest Loser.' 'Wild how some folks still lie like it's 1985 before texts and email were a thing,' she added. Michaels concluded her post, writing: 'And, the last image is my second to last text ever to Bob Harper. Take from it what you will.' The text shows Michaels's alleged text to Harper, timestamped June 15, 2014. 'I really think it's s****y of you to not even respond to my texts. It's this kind of thing that always makes me so disappointed [in] our relationship,' Michaels reportedly sent to Harper. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Harper acknowledged that he and Michaels 'weren't besties, but we were partners on a television show for a very long time.' He said that her silence 'spoke volumes to me,' adding, 'I would not expect Jillian Michaels to do anything other than what she wants to do.' In a second post, Michaels addressed a claim in the documentary that she told a contestant during a Biggest Loser season finale: 'You're going to make me a millionaire.' 'I want to state unequivocally that this is false,' she wrote on Instagram. 'The full moment was captured on camera, and both the contestant and I were wearing microphones. If such a comment had been made, it would exist on the audio record.' Michaels reportedly told TMZ that she would be speaking to attorney Bryan Freedman — who is currently representing Justin Baldoni in his legal matter with Blake Lively. The publication reports that the trainer is weighing up legal action against Netflix, the producer of the documentary, Harper, and The Biggest Loser's medical advisor, Dr. Robert Huizenga. Nearly one month after Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder of Kaylee Goncalves and her three friends, her brother shared that he and Olivia Vitale—the reporter he met during the investigation—are now engaged. "I interviewed Steven's family," Olivia detailed to NewsNation's Banfield Aug. 18. "This was when Bryan was still not arrested yet." The independent journalist noted that Steve Goncalves—Steven and Kaylee's dad—and his wife Kristi Goncalves learned about her TikTok, which has amassed over 1.3 million followers, through their daughter and reached out to her through email. "Several days before she had passed, she had sent my page to Kristi and was talking about it," Olivia explained. "So they wanted to reach out and do a documentary with me." "That was really when we first really met, and we just became best friends after that. And it's history." For Steven, his relationship has been the silver lining of their family's tragic few years. "There is a bright spot," he told host Brian Entin. "I did meet Olivia. I do have my partner for the rest of my life and I'll hold on to that." As for what their future looks like?
