CPI(ML) accuses EC of misleading country on deletion of names from Bihar electoral roll

Time of Indiaa day ago
NEW DELHI: Accusing the
of misleading the country by claiming that there are no complaints over deletion of names from Bihar voters lists, Communist Party of India (M-L) slammed the poll body for not providing booth-level lists of names deleted because of deaths and migration.

It said the refusal to provide select lists is making it difficult for political parties to analyse exclusion of electors from the electoral roll.
CPI (ML) chief
said EC's claim that there are no objections or complaints is far from the truth, as the election body itself has admitted that 3,000 objections have been filed directly by electors, who have since been asked to apply afresh for inclusion by filling up Form 6. 'How does the EC know that the nearly 15,000 Form 6 received so far are all from first-term voters and not those whose names have been deleted?' he asked.
Bhattacharya said CPI (ML) has repeatedly asked the EC to provide booth-level lists of the names deleted, and the reasons for the same, but the commission has not fulfilled the demand. 'The EC insists on supplying only consolidated lists, which makes it inordinately difficult for political parties to crosscheck every deletion. Why is the EC refusing to share booth-level lists of those considered dead or having permanently migrated from Bihar, especially if it is really serious about ensuring that no eligible voter is left out?' he wondered.
He also asked why the lists are being shared only in English and not in Hindi.

Trump admin asks SC to lift curbs on Southern California immigration stops

The Trump administration on Thursday asked the Supreme Court to halt a court order restricting immigration stops that swept up at least two US citizens in Southern California. The emergency petition comes after an appeals court refused to lift a temporary restraining order barring authorities from stopping or arresting people based solely on factors like what language speak or where they work. The move is the latest in a string of emergency appeals from the Trump administration to the high court, which has recently sided with the Republican president in a number of high-profile cases. The Justice Department argued that federal agents are allowed to consider those factors when ramping up enforcement of immigration laws in Los Angeles, an area it considers a top enforcement priority." Trump officials asked the justices to immediately halt the order from US District Judge Maame E Frimpong in Los Angeles. She found a mountain of evidence that enforcement tactics were violating the US Constitution in what the plaintiffs called roving patrols." Her ruling came in a lawsuit filed by immigrant advocacy groups who accused President Donald Trump's administration of systematically targeting brown-skinned people in Southern California during the administration's crackdown on illegal immigration. Trump's Solicitor General D John Sauer asked the justices to immediately halt Frimpong's order, arguing that it puts a straitjacket on agents in an area with a large number of people in the US illegally. No one thinks that speaking Spanish or working in construction always creates reasonable suspicion ... But in many situations, such factors alone or in combination can heighten the likelihood that someone is unlawfully present in the United States, Sauer wrote. He also argued that the order flouted a recent Supreme Court decision restricting judges from handing down universal injunctions, since it restricted stops in the entire region rather than only the plaintiffs. Department of Homeland Security attorneys have said immigration officers target people based on illegal presence in the US, not skin colour, race or ethnicity. The order from Frimpong, who was nominated by Democratic President Joe Biden, bars authorities from using factors like apparent race or ethnicity, speaking Spanish or English with an accent, presence at a location such as a tow yard or car wash, or someone's occupation as the only basis for reasonable suspicion for detention. The Los Angeles region has been a battleground for the Trump administration after its aggressive immigration strategy spurred protests and the deployment of the National Guards and Marines for several weeks. Plaintiffs on the lawsuit before Frimpong included three detained immigrants and two US citizens. One was Los Angeles resident Brian Gavidia, who was shown in a June 13 video being seized by federal agents as he yelled, I was born here in the states, East LA bro! He was released about 20 minutes later after showing agents his identification, as was another citizen stopped at a car wash, according to the lawsuit.

The internet plays an important part in our lives. When we need to go somewhere or search for something, we immediately turn to Google. Most of the applications we use on our smartphones are internet-based. Almost every country in the world, not just India, uses the internet. There has been a steady increase in internet usage all over the world. However, there is one peculiar country in the world that still has no internet access. Eritrea is the only country in the world where citizens have no ability to access internet data on their mobile phones. Mobile data and similar technologies are hardly present in the country at all. Eritrea is the one of the most secretive countries in the world. Eritrea is located in East Africa on the Red Sea, bordered by Djibouti, Sudan, and Ethiopia. Eritrea's authoritarian rule has led to it being described as the 'North Korea of Africa.' What makes this country's internet situation different from other low-income nations? Eritrea covers 117,000 square kilometers and has around 3.5 million inhabitants. According to the Good News Today report, it has no official languages. The people of Eritrea usually speak Tigrinya, Arabic, and English. Some people even speak Cushitic or Afro-Asiatic languages. The capital of Eritrea is Asmara. Asmara is called 'Little Rome' because it has many classic Italian buildings. Eritrea is an authoritarian regime. Since reaching independence, the country has never held an election. Isaias Afwerki has been the president since 1993. Eritrea was under the long-term rule of Ethiopia and Italy. Eritrea was annexed by Ethiopia in 1962. It became its own independent state in 1993. Isaias Afwerki has been the president since 1993. Eritrea was under the long-term rule of Ethiopia and Italy. Eritrea was annexed by Ethiopia in 1962. It became its own independent state in 1993. Which country completely lacks access to the internet and social media platforms? Eritrea is the sole country in the world with a lack of internet for the general population. Only about 1% of the population is known to have used the internet at some time. Eritrea has no mobile data service and there is no way to use the internet in peoples' homes. Internet use is limited to just a handful of cafes scattered across the country. People use these cafes to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi using their mobile devices. However, the internet connection speed in these cafes is extremely slow—often less than 2 G. Most people in Eritrea cannot use the internet regularly because of the expense of these cafes, which charge about 100 Eritrean nakfa ( a little over 100 rupees) an hour to use the Wi-Fi. Because of the dire economic state of the country, this leaves a very small portion of the population able to afford internet access. Shubham Nomad, an Indian traveler, released a video on Instagram after his visit to Eritrea. In the video, Shubham mentions that phones in Eritrea are not that smart. It can take about 5 to 10 minutes to even send one WhatsApp message. Photos or videos will not upload or download properly. This is the hard truth about the country. Why is Eritrea known as North Korea of Africa? Eritrea is known as the North Korea of Africa mainly because it is still under a very strict authoritarian regime and its citizens have to do mandatory military service. There is nothing in Eritrea that is truly private – hospitals, airlines, transportation, and television are all run by the government. There are no ATM services in Eritrea, so you have to carry cash everywhere you go. Without cash, you will be unable to buy anything. Eritrea is last in the World Press Freedom Index. There is no independent news and no independent journalists. The only broadcast service is one state-run TV channel, and no foreign channels are permitted. People cannot leave the country without government permission. Anyone caught trying to leave, is reportedly shot on sight. Tourist access to Eritrea is heavily restricted, which is why it is considered one of the least visited places in the world.

Rahul's claims establish SIR needed to correct voters' list: Assam CM

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi earlier in the day, Gandhi claimed that over one lakh votes in the Mahadevapura assembly constituency in Karnataka were found to be fake, duplicate or bulk voter, with invalid addresses and new voters with misuse of Form 6. Sarma asserted that the SIR is essential for the northeastern state to remove names of 'Bangladeshis'. Guwahati, Aug 7 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday referred to a section of Rahul Gandhi's criticism of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, contending that the Congress leader extended 'indirect support' for the exercise through his comments. 'Rahul Gandhi has himself given a certificate that SIR should be conducted. There should be a unique name along with an Aadhaar number. He (Gandhi) took some North Indian names. In Assam, we have names of Bangladeshis in our voter rolls. The same names are in Barpeta, Guwahati, Kerala and Delhi. It is a disease. That is why SIR is being done in Bihar,' Sarma told reporters here. The CM said even names of dead people feature in the electoral rolls of Assam. 'That is why it is required in Assam. After a long time, Rahul Gandhi has indirectly supported the Election Commission. His claim establishes that SIR is needed. I welcome it,' Sarma said. Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, also made explosive claims of a 'huge criminal fraud' in polls through collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission. Alleging that a 'vote chori model' was being used in many constituencies across the country, Gandhi said that the judiciary needs to get involved in this because 'the democracy that we love so much, does not exist anymore'. He claimed that there was 'vote chori' (stealing of votes) of 1,00,250 votes in the Mahadevapura segment, with 11,965 duplicate voters, 40,009 voters with fake and invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk voters or single address voters, 4,132 voters with invalid photos and 33,692 voters misusing Form 6 of new voters.
