Ally McCoist brands Celtic 'a Europa League club' 8 months on from Euro success

The Hoops impressed in the Champions League last season and face a playoff to join the elite clubs this season Rangers hero Ally McCoist reckons Celtic are a "Europa League club" - despite securing Champions League progression last season. ‌ Brendan Rodgers' led the Hoops out of the league phase in January last season and will look to join Europe's elite once again by navigating Kairait Almaty in the playoff round. ‌ Seeing off the champions of Kazakhstan would secure a £40million jackpot - but McCoist reckons the club would be punching above their weight. ‌ The Ibrox icon lumped in Rangers with Celtic – as he confessed his beloved team face a tough test in seeing off Club Brugge to reach the league phase promise land. He told talkSPORT: "Taking the first game against Panathinaikos, they were very good, and a great home result in the next round. In the away leg they weren't superb, but I was always confident they were going to go through. "I think this is a different game, the opposition is obviously of a far better standard. I saw Brugge last season and they are a level up. "Financially, it would mean so much to both Scottish clubs if they could make it through to the league phase of the Champions League. "Whether they are equipped to handle Celtic proved last year with a couple of good performances - particularly at home - you can qualify. ‌ "I think both clubs, to be brutally honest, are Europa League clubs at this moment in time. They can certainly go further in that tournament "Celtic have a game against Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan, and I would expect them to qualify. "I really would. Rangers have a chance, I would suggest then go in as second favourites, but financially - just to be able to compete - they have to make it through." ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. Celtic star puts contract talks on back burner as Kwon makes headlines after debut vs PSG

The Hoops are also locked in talks with a Championship club over a possible cooperation agreement Kasper Schmeichel insists he isn't thinking about his Celtic future as he puts contract talks on the back burner. ‌ The veteran keeper turns 39 in November and has set his sights on starring for Denmark at next summer's World Cup. ‌ Schmeichel – who replaced Joe Hart between the sticks at Parkhead last summer – hasn't thought about retirement just yet. ‌ 'No, that's just not how we operate right now,' he told STV. 'There's a massive game and all focus is on that. 'I can't imagine that's important to them or to me, at the moment. 'I've got a contract and it is what it is at the moment. We'll take that at some point.' Meanwhile, Celts are planning for the future, with young shotstopper Marcus Gill close to agreeing on a new contract. Elsewhere, former midfielder Kwon has caught the eye in France after an impressive debut against Champions League winners PSG. ‌ The South Korean was flogged to Nantes during the summer, having failed to make a single competitive appearance for Celtic since arriving from Busan I-Park in 2023. Kwon - who had mixed loan stints at St Mirren and Hibs - made his Nantes debut on Sunday as the new French top-flight season got underway. ‌ The 24-year-old didn't look out of place as he came up against PSG superstars Vitinha, Fabio Ruiz and countryman Lee Kang-in in the middle of the park. Kwon put in the hard yards before being subbed for ex-Arsenal ace Francis Coquelin in the final 10 minutes as PSG edged out 1-0 winners. And the official Ligue 1 social media accounts marked Kwon's promising start on X, sharing a picture and writing: "Kwon and Lee, South Korean talents shining in Ligue 1." ‌ Finally, Shaun Maloney is leading talks with Inverness Caley Thistle over a possible cooperation agreement with Celtic. Caley Thistle interim chief executive Charlie Christie revealed he met with the Parkhead club's professional player pathway manager. He told the Inverness Courier: 'We have been offered it by two or three clubs. Shaun Maloney drove up from Glasgow and said to me that they had done the data on the way Caley Thistle play. 'He said that we are only one of two clubs in League One that they would put players to and that is compliment to Scott Kellacher. Celtic is one we are looking at.' Celtic already have an agreement with Championship side Ayr United, which allows youngsters between 16-21 to move between the parent and cooperation teams throughout the season to increase playing time.

Police officer hurt as fans in dock over Fir Park trouble

The trouble happened before a Scottish Premiership match against Celtic in 2023. A police officer was slightly hurt when football fans kicked open a fire exit door at Motherwell's Fir Park Stadium. ‌ The trouble happened before a Scottish Premiership match against Celtic on September 30, 2023. ‌ Mac Martin, 23, of Crinan Gardens, Bishopbriggs; Sam Colquhoun, 22, of Craigdhu Avenue, Airdrie, and Padraig Doyle, 20, of Auckland Wynd, Dalmarnock, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week. ‌ They admitted causing a breach of the peace at the stadium. Five other men had their not guilty pleas accepted. The charge was much reduced from what the eight faced originally. It had been alleged that, with faces masked and while acting with unknown others, they conducted themselves in a disorderly manner in Motherwell town centre and at the stadium. They allegedly jumped over ticket barriers at Motherwell train station and pushed through turnstiles at Fir Park without showing tickets. ‌ It was also claimed the fans threw fireworks at police horses, causing one horse to stumble against, and damage, a police vehicle. It was alleged that one mounted police officer was hit on the head by a bottle and another officer was hurt as supporters without tickets shoved open fire exit doors. The men were also accused of going on to the pitch and gesturing, and throwing objects towards opposing fans. ‌ All eight were due to stand trial but five were allowed to leave the dock when they were formally acquitted. The only incident the court then heard of related to an attempt to pull open a door where a ticket examiner was in place and the fire exit door being kicked open. A police officer on the other side of the fire exit door sustained a slight strain as he tried to close it. ‌ Between 10 and 15 fans went through the door and ran into the concourse. Martin, Colquhoun and Doyle were identified as being in the group. It was accepted by the prosecution that all of those who went through the fire exit door had tickets for the match which Celtic won 2-1. ‌ Sentence on all three accused, who appeared as first offenders, was deferred until next month for background reports. Sheriff John Speir will also consider a Crown request to impose football orders on them. * Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Sign up to our newsletters here.
