Venus Williams marked her return to professional tennis with a convincing doubles victory at the Washington Open on Monday, more than a year after her last competitive appearance.
The 45-year-old American partnered with fellow countrywoman Hailey Baptiste to win their women's doubles round of 16 match in straight sets.
Williams and the 23-year-old Baptiste defeated Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6–3, 6–1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament. It was Williams' first match on the WTA Tour in 16 months, her last outing having come at the Miami Open in March 2024.

'It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team," Williams told Sky Sports after the match.
'I love this game and [I'm] still hitting it big."
'Inspiring' Return After Long Absence
The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion admitted it felt 'inspiring" to be back on court after such a long layoff. Despite the time away, Williams looked comfortable alongside Baptiste, combining well with the younger American throughout the match.
Williams was full of praise for Baptiste and joked that she may have found the perfect doubles partner a little too late in her career—especially given her legendary doubles success with younger sister Serena, with whom she won 14 Grand Slam titles.
'I could see that we were going to be a good team," Williams said.
'We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right?
I think Serena was just in the way."

Bumrah playing fifth Test would be great deal for us, says Gill
Manchester, Jul 28 (PTI) India captain Shubman Gill said it would be a big deal for the team if pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah manages to play series-deciding fifth Test despite the team's original plan to restrict him to three matches. Bumrah, who suffered a stress reaction earlier in the year, was initially scheduled to feature in only three Tests on the long England tour to manage his workload and prevent further injuries. He missed the second Test at Edgbaston but played in the other three. With England leading the series 2-1 after a draw in Manchester, India must win at The Oval to level the five-match contest. 'If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told BBC's 'Test Match Special'. 'If he's not playing, I still think we have the right kind of bowling attack," Gill added. Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and has approximately four and a half days to recover for the final match, which begins on July 31. He has bowled 119.4 overs in five innings across three Test matches so far, which is roughly 24 overs per innings. However, given that he is India's joint highest wicket-taker in the series with 14 scalps (with Mohd Siraj), including two five-wicket hauls from three matches, the team may be tempted to bring him back for the finale. 'Even if he isn't going to play, you wouldn't tell people now, just on a purely tactical basis," Cook said. 'They made a mistake at the beginning of the series saying he could only play three, because you get thrown into a situation like now where the series is still on the line. 'If he's not fit to play, not playing is the right decision," he added. India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that all fast bowlers are available for selection ahead of the Oval Test and didn't rule out Bumrah featuring in a fourth match. After the Lord's Test, India suffered a spate of setbacks, with Arshdeep Singh nursing a blow to his bowling hand, Akash Deep ruled out with a groin issue, and Mohammed Siraj battling general fatigue. All-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy was also ruled out of the series. As a result, India had to fly in reinforcements from home. 'Virat Was Averaging 30...': Manjrekar Says India Have Moved On From Kohli-Rohit

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has said that Rohit Sharma was averaging a dismal 10 in the last two Test series that he played, while ace batter Virat Kohli was averaging 30 in the last five years and although they weren't easy to replace, their retirements haven't been a huge loss to India. In the absence of Rohit and Kohli, Test skipper Shubman Gill led India's batting charge twice, first in the Birmingham victory over England, then in the Manchester draw that kept the series alive. Former England batter Jonathan Trott admitted that had the scenario been reversed, England wouldn't have managed to pull off the same. 'If you're taking the Joe Root out of the side or taking two experienced players like India have had to retire recently, it would be a very, very different scenario. I think India have given a great account of themselves," Trott said while speaking on Sony Sports. 'They've kept the series alive and it's certainly interesting to see the mood in the bus on the England bus when it goes down to London compared to the Indian bus on the way down to London," Trott added. The anchor pointed out that the situation was different for India, leading to Manjrekar highlighting Rohit-Kohli's diminishing returns. 'Rohit Sharma was averaging 10 in the last two series that he played and Virat Kohli was averaging 30 in the last five years. So they were perhaps not easy to replace, but it wasn't like it was a huge loss," Manjrekar said. 'It was a loss of two very senior players, but not a loss of contribution, because they weren't contributing as much," Manjrekar added. Having conceded a 311-run lead and lost their openers for ducks in the second innings, India displayed resolve to get a favourable result because of the efforts of Gill (103 off 238), KL Rahul (90 off 230), Jadeja (107 not out off 185) and Washington (101 not out off 206).
