How Japanese actress Mei Nagano got caught in wild cheating scandal with TWO of her co-stars

Daily Mail24-04-2025
One of Japan 's most popular young stars has been swept up in a cheating scandal with not one but two of her male co-stars, which all of them have denied.
Mei Nagano is currently one of Japan's most sought-after actresses, landing major hits in both film and television as well as racking up lucrative endorsement deals with luxury brands like Prada and SK-II.
At just 25, she's already been nominated for three Japan Academy Film Prizes (Japan's equivalent of the Oscars), and her Netflix series Burn the House Down topped the streaming charts in 2023.
Known for her squeaky clean image, Nagano was caught in a mammoth scandal this week when Japanese tabloid Shukan Bunshun claimed that she has been having an affair with married actor Kei Tanaka - who is 15 years her senior.
Tanaka, who shares two children with his wife Sakura, previously starred with Nagano in the 2021 film And So the Baton Is Passed, in which she played a high school student and he played her stepfather.
The tabloid released a selfie of the pair posing cheek-to-cheek together on Halloween and another image of them holding hands.
They also published photos of Tanaka leaving Nagano's apartment, where he had spent the night after they went out drinking together.
Making things more complicated, Shukan Bunshun also claims that Nagano has been romantically involved with South Korean actor Kim Mu-jun, 26, who has a supporting role in her latest drama series, News Anchor, which is currently filming.
They also claimed that Mu-jun had been staying in Nagano's apartment while he was in Japan to film the series with her.
Both men have denied being involved with the young actress.
When confronted by a reporter from Shukan Bunshun outside of Nagano's house, Tanaka said that he had only spent the night because he'd drank too much, according to Nante Japan.
His agency then put out a statement, refuting allegations of an affair.
'We want to believe that there was no affair. Kei Tanaka has been with our agency since he was 15 years old. He's never been involved in any scandals with women before,' the agency said, according to Channel News Asia.
'This is a situation where excuses are difficult to make. As an agency, we deeply reflect on what has transpired and strongly urge him to exercise restraint and self-awareness.'
Mu-jun's agency followed suit, stating that the actor and Nagano were nothing more than 'close colleagues.'
Nagano's agency offered a similar statement, saying, 'there is no truth to any romantic involvement.'
'However, we have sternly conveyed to Mei Nagano that her actions this time could easily lead to misunderstandings,' they added.
For now, Nagano will continue filming News Anchor, although there is speculation that her screen time may be reduced as a result of the scandal.
There is also the question on whether or not the scandal will affect any of her endorsement deals.
The actress is currently an ambassador Prada and is the face of countless other brands in Japan.
Last month, Prada was forced to terminate their contract with Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun after his secret relationship with late actress Kim Sae-ron was exposed shortly after her suicide.
One of Nagano's major fan accounts has already closed down in the wake of the scandal.
Despite the furor, Nagano has a busy year ahead with several projects in the pipeline.
Her new film Kakukaku Shikajika premieres in May, and then she will star in a big budget historical drama Kakukaku Shikajika due for release in 2026.

Now, according to Daily Mail, Channel 4 has opted not to bring the show back for a second season. 'Around The World in 80 Weighs caused a stir with critics and its audience, but while Channel 4 had originally commissioned it for one series, there was scope for it to be brought back with a new batch of participants after they established the show's format,' they said. 'The series being parked is reflective of changing audience habits where programmes remotely reminiscent of noughties hits that created a shame culture on other people's lives and their struggles for entertainment purposes is widely shunned.' Across the five episode series, the participants travelled across Japan, Texas, Tonga and India to try weight loss treatments. This also included discovering diet secrets, and experiencing the different cultural relationships to food in both positive and negative ways. In one uncomfortable scene, the group are seen being laughed at on the streets of Tokyo by onlookers. The group visit the Japanese city after it's revealed the country only has a 4% obesity rate, compared to the UK's 25%. Participant Marisa is seen telling cameras: "It just blows my mind that you're not allowed to be who you are and you just have to fit it. "I don't feel like I should be here. In this country I don't feel comfortable, and for me personally, it isn't somewhere I would come back." 'I don't want to die young!' sobs Around The World In 80 Weighs star as she breaks down after heart-wrenching warning After that, the group moved on to Tonga, which has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. After meeting a woman who at 28 weighs 47 stone, and another who had lost both her legs, members of the group were reduced to tears as they feared they would die.

Film Director Yoshimitsu Morita

This autumn, the National Film Archive presents the first comprehensive retrospective dedicated to one of Japan's most inventive and genre-defying filmmakers. Yoshimitsu Morita (1950–2011) began his career in 8mm films and made a lasting mark on Japanese cinema with works like The Family Game (1983) and The Black House (1999), embracing comedy, horror, courtroom dramas, period pieces and more. The exhibition offers an opportunity to step right into Morita's imaginative world. Visitors can explore recreations of the iconic dining room from The Family Game and of the director's personal study, plus a gallery of his cherished vinyl records. Posters, props, annotated scripts and idea notebooks showcase the full range of the Shonan native's creative process, while video installations trace Morita's career from its indie roots to commercial success. Running alongside the exhibition, a special programme (October 14–November 23) will screen key works from Morita's filmography, including lesser-known titles and collaborations. Deaths in Tokimeki (1984), Keiho (1999) and Kiriko no Fukei (1998; written by Morita and directed by Tomoyuki Akaishi) will be screened with English subtitles. A series of talks featuring producer Kazuko Misawa and cultural commentator Utamaru will offer further insight into Morita's legacy.

The Dutch bookstore named the world's most beautiful – here's the full list

Though it doesn't have a direct translation in English, the Japanese concept of 'tsundoku' – which describes people who buy more books than they can feasibly read – is something a lot of us can relate to. And bookshops, with their cosiness, charm and warmth, are mostly to blame. But not all bookshops were created equal, and that's why the awards team at 1000 Libraries decided to rank the world's most beautiful ones. Nineteen different stores were nominated for their hard work in keeping book-buying alive (based on metrics like online reviews and social media engagement), and a vote was opened for 60 days where more than 200,000 opinions were recorded. Did you see that Amsterdam is building tiny staircases for cats all over the city? So, where is the prettiest place to buy books on the planet? Well, according to this ranking, it's (drum roll, please) Boakhandel Dominicanen! That's right: the Maastricht shop stacked above Shakespeare and Company in Paris and Daunt Books in London to claim the top spot. But, are we really that surprised? Well, given this bookshop is housed in a thirteenth-century Gothic church with towering vaulted ceilings and a grand steel bookcase, no, not really. 'The store offers a wide range of books, including English titles, as well as a music section with CDs and vinyl records. It also has a café, where cultural events like readings and live music performances take place, organized by Boekhandel Dominicanen in collaboration with the café,' reads the 1000 Libraries roundup. But there are plenty more bookshops to flick through, so read on for the full top 10. These are the world's 10 most beautiful bookshops Boekhandel Dominicanen, Maastricht Shakespeare and Company, Paris El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires The Gently Mad Bookshop, Edinburgh Word on the Water, London Dujiangyan Zhongshuge, Chengdu Eterna Cadencia, Buenos Aires Daunt Books, London Albertine Books, New York The Last Bookstore, Los Angeles Oh, and here's our shiny new roundup of the world's most beautiful buildings.
