Man fined Rs 1 lakh for flying drone in Pilibhit Tiger Reserve core

File image used for representative purpose. PILIBHIT: Authorities of the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) on Tuesday fined a local resident ₹1 lakh and seized his drone, worth around Rs 1.4 lakh, after he was found filming the core forest of the Mala range without permission. The man, identified as Arbaz Ansari of Pilibhit city and in his 20s, had uploaded the clips on Instagram on August 17. Officials said a departmental case was lodged against him under provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act. 'He breached the secrecy of the core forest area and habitats of scheduled wildlife, especially tigers,' said PTR divisional forest officer Manish Singh. Forest officials stressed that entry into the core area of a tiger reserve, national park or wildlife sanctuary is strictly prohibited without clearance from the competent authority. The restriction is aimed at protecting wildlife from poachers and other potential threats. 'By filming tiger habitats through a drone, Ansari effectively conducted surveillance of the protected forest region, which is liable for punitive action,' Singh said. Ansari deposited the fine on Tuesday to avoid imprisonment. He later told PTR staff that he was unaware of the rules. 'I would never have been involved in an unauthorised act. I only shot the video to showcase the beauty and biodiversity of the reserve on social media,' he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
