A peaceful afternoon on the golf course became a drama last week in New Jersey. What should have been a pleasant trip to one of the most iconic and possibly famous golf courses in New Jersey took a tragic turn.
During a sudden storm and subsequent lightning strike, a 28-year-old man was gravely injured. Friends and onlookers were surprised by the weather change. Sadly, we now have the heartbreaking news days after learning about this tragic event. The young man who was well-regarded for both his talent and his good character has died. His family, friends, and community will mourn his loss with sadness and love.

On Monday, July 8, 2025, during a rapid storm, Simon Mariani was golfing at Ballyowen Golf Club at Hardyston, New Jersey when he was struck by lightning.
He was golfing with friends when the clouds quickly turned black.
Brian Delia, one of the golfers, told WABC that when the temperature changed, he began videotaping.
'All of a sudden the lightning strikes and I ended the video recording,'
he said.
Emergency help was called right away. Other golfers and an off-duty firefighter gave first aid until paramedics arrived. Simon Mariani was then airlifted to the nearest hospital in serious condition.

Simon Mariani lived in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. He returned to the University of Notre Dame in 2019 for a degree in accounting and economics, and then later in 2024 to earn an MBA. He was an associate at MTS Health Partners, Manhattan, New York City.
His obituary describes him as 'driven, dedicated, smart, likeable and exceptionally talented.' It also says he loved his family, sports, and the outdoors.
'Simon had the heart of a champion,'
it read.
Crystal Springs Resort, which runs the Ballyowen course, told News 12:
'The safety of our guests is one of our top priorities. Our thoughts are with the guest and his family.'
Simon Mariani's funeral will be held on Friday, July 18, in Franklin Lakes. He is still remembered by his parents, two sisters, and many loved ones.

Noah Lyles, Sha'Carri Richardson Blaze Through Heats At USA Track Trials In World Championships Prep
Last Updated: Lyles and Richardson advanced in their respective events at the ongoing USA Track and Field trials, in the tune-up to the upcoming World Championships. Sha'Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles, reigning 100m world champions, effortlessly advanced through their opening heats at the USA Track and Field trials on Thursday, as they prepare to defend their global titles at the World Championships in September. Although Richardson and Lyles have already secured their spots for Tokyo due to their status as reigning champions, they are utilising this week's event at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, to perfect their form. Richardson, who exudes charisma, finished ninth at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene earlier in July with a modest time of 11.19 seconds. However, the 25-year-old Texan showed signs of improvement by finishing second in her heat with a time of 11.07 seconds, just behind Kayla White who clocked 10.89 seconds. Richardson's time was the 11th fastest in the opening heats, where Melissa Jefferson-Wooden impressed by running 10.86 seconds into a 1.5m/s headwind. 'Felt amazing to run a qualifying, show fitness and take the rest of the time to get ready for Tokyo," Richardson remarked, noting her comfort in competing, knowing her World Championship berth is assured.
