The Bull Case for Galaxy Digital Is AI Data Centers Not Bitcoin Mining, Research Firm Says
When Galaxy Digital (GLXY) CEO Mike Novogratz bought Argos' Helios data center in late 2022, at the depths of the post-FTX crypto winter, the company thought they were bailing out a desperate bitcoin (BTC) miner on the brink of bankruptcy.
This, however, was before ChatGPT had become mainstream. Novogratz and co. had no idea that this data center would be a strategic asset as the growing Artificial Intelligence (AI) industry clamours for more data center space, thanks to the explosive growth of Large Language Models (LLMs).
As analysts from Rittenhouse Research outlined in a new note, Galaxy's lucky find, which instigated the company's move out of BTC mining altogether, might now be crypto's most lucrative pivot, as they make the case that the infrastructure used to mine digital gold is better used to process AI algorithms, and firms that shift away from BTC mining towards AI infrastructure are set to be the next growth stocks.
Analysts from Rittenhouse argue that AI data centers represent a significantly more lucrative business model than BTC mining because they generate stable, long-term cash flows with minimal ongoing capital expenditures, contrasting sharply with the volatility and capital intensity of bitcoin mining.
BTC mining revenues inherently decline by approximately 50% every four years due to the scheduled halvinings. Effectively, the play for a miner is being a long-term bull on BTC's price and the ability for semiconductor fabs and designers to develop chips that are perpetually more efficient, and, for an investor, that's a lot of variables.
In contrast, AI data centers like Galaxy's Helios facility earn consistent, high-margin revenue through long-term, triple net leases to hyperscaler tenants (a large-scale cloud computing provider), without needing continuous investment in mining equipment.
'Galaxy stumbled upon Helios by virtue of good luck,' Rittenhouse wrote in their note. While competitors such as Riot Platforms and Cipher Mining have publicly tried to "rewrite history," retroactively suggesting their business was always broader than BTC mining, analysts say, 'in reality, these miners had zero intentions to do anything besides mine BTC until ChatGPT was launched.'
Galaxy's transition reflects a broader trend as BTC miners attempt to pivot toward AI and cloud computing.
Yet, analysts underscore Galaxy's significant advantage, stemming from its superior balance sheet ($1.8 billion of net cash and investments), successful execution record, and credibility established through the CoreWeave lease.
While some have raised concerns over CoreWeave's creditworthiness, causing Galaxy's shares to trade at a significant discount, Rittenhouse analysts say these fears are significantly overblown, highlighting CoreWeave's exceptional revenue stability from long-term contracts accounting for 96% of its revenues and its strong institutional backing.
The analysts emphasize that CoreWeave's debt is carefully structured through delayed draw term loans, utilized specifically to finance infrastructure directly linked to secured customer agreements, dramatically reducing default risk.
Rittenhouse also notes that Galaxy has gone fully in on AI, and now doesn't have any exposure to mining.
"Galaxy has completely exited all bitcoin mining activities to focus solely on its AI data center ambitions, which sends a positive signal to potential hyperscaler tenants," analysts wrote.
As Rittenhouse writes, Cipher Mining's CEO Tyler Page recently acknowledged the uphill battle miners face when approaching major AI customers.
"It's not lost on us that if we're talking to a counterparty with a $1 trillion market cap... One drawback for bitcoin miners is that major counterparties say, 'wow, that's a big obligation for you guys to backstop for such an important investment for us,'" Page said on the company's Q1 2025 earnings call.
Galaxy doesn't have that problem. With this Helios deal in place and Novogratz's company totally out of mining, Galaxy's accidental pivot might just turn out to be crypto's best strategic move in years – if Rittenhouse's thesis is correct.

Trending tickers: The latest investor updates on Tesla, Applied Digital, Wise, Wizz Air and Dr Martens
Sales of Tesla (TSLA) vehicles in the UK fell by more than third in May, according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on Thursday. SMMT said that registrations of Tesla vehicles fell by 36% year-on-year in May to 2,016 cars. That's despite an increase in sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV) overall last month, with registrations up nearly 26% year-on-year to 32,738 units. This follows data released at the start of the week, which showed that Tesla new car sales fell in Spain and Portugal in May, compared to the same month last year. Read more: FTSE 100 LIVE: Stocks rise as traders await ECB interest rate decision Meanwhile, figures published by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) last week showed that sales of Tesla vehicles dropped across Europe by 49% to 7,261 units in April. Sales have fallen as CEO Elon Musk faced backlash for his role heading up US president Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), though the billionaire confirmed he was leaving his role advising the Trump administration last week. Following his exit from Washington DC, Musk has ramped up his criticism of Trump's tax bill this week. "Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL," Musk posted on X on Wednesday. Shares in Tesla were down 2% in pre-market trading on Thursday and are down nearly 7% over the past five days. Shares in Applied Digital (APLD) continued to rally in Wednesday's session, closing 29% higher and were up 4.5% in pre-market trading on Thursday. The jump in Applied Digital (APLD) shares come after the company announced a $7bn ($5.2bn) deal with CoreWeave (CRWV), the cloud services provider backed by Nvidia (NVDA). Fintech firm Wise (WISE.L) announced on Thursday that it planned to switch its primary listing from the UK to the US, in another blow to the London market. Wise CEO Kristo Käärmann said that the company now planned to dual list its shares in the US and UK. "We believe the addition of a primary US listing would help us accelerate our mission and bring substantial strategic and capital market benefits to Wise and our Owners," he said. Read more: Stocks that are trending today Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell (AJB.L), said: "The UK stock market is like a boxer determined to keep going in a gruelling fight. While the FTSE 100's (^FTSE) share price performance might have beaten the main US indices this year, the broader UK stock market continues to take a succession of blows to the head from a reputational perspective." "Although subject to a shareholder vote, it seems unlikely Wise will receive widespread opposition if it means the shares could be worth more in the future," he said. In addition, metals investor Cobalt Holdings said on Wednesday that it would not go ahead with its planned initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange. Shares in FTSE 250-listed (^FTMC) airline Wizz Air dived 27% on Thursday morning, following the release of its final full-year results. Wizz Air posted a nearly 62% drop in operating profit for the 2025 fiscal year, at €167.5m (£140.96m), while net profit was down 41.5% to €213.9m. The airline said its 2025 results had been impacted by groundings of its planes related to engine issues. In addition, Wizz Air said it was not giving guidance for the 2026 fiscal year "given the lack of visibility across our trading seasons". Stocks: Create your watchlist and portfolio Garry White, chief investment commentator at Charles Stanley, said: "The company is facing rising costs after grounding a significant proportion of its aircraft due to problems with Pratt & Witney engines. "The tone of the statement, however, was upbeat. Despite its many challenges, the airline remains profitable — and the number of grounded aircraft will start reducing in both absolute and relative terms in the current financial year." "Two of the airline's key markets — Ukraine and Israel — are in crisis, so its operations will continue to be negatively impacted by the situations there," he added. "It could be some time before services in these markets return to normal. "Nevertheless, the current financial year looks set to see an improvement, as the grounding issue is slowly resolved." Shares in Dr Martens (DOCS.L) were up 18% on Thursday morning, after the iconic boot brand revealed an update to its business strategy, as recently appointed CEO Ije Nwokorie looks to turn around the business. In its final full-year 2025 results, released on Thursday, Dr Martens posted group revenue of £787.6m ($1.07bn), which was down 10% year-on-year on a reported basis but was in line with expectations. Reported profit before tax of £8.8m was down from £93m in 2024. However, Nwokorie said the company's new "Levers for Growth" strategy would increase "opportunities by shifting the business from a channel-first to a consumer-first mindset". Read more: UK 'bargain' stocks that have outperformed the market long-term "We will give more people more reasons to buy more of our products, whether that's our iconic boots and shoes, newer product families such as Zebzag and Buzz, or adjacent categories such as sandals, bags and leather goods," he said. "And we will tailor distribution to each market, blending DTC (direct-to-consumer) and B2B (business-to-business), optimising brand reach and ensuring a better use of capital." On the back of this strategy, the company said that over the medium-term, it expected to deliver "sustainable, profitable revenue growth above the rate of the relevant footwear market, with operating leverage driving a mid to high-teens EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) margin." AJ Bell's Mould said: "Dr Martens is on the front foot with a strategy that seeks to kick out the troubles of old and return the business to profitable growth. This should shift the market's focus from earlier problems in the US and a sharp drop in earnings to a business intent on regaining its power." 2 Ways I'm Using ChatGPT Advanced Voice to Improve My Life
Last fall, my artist mom and I were invited to give a presentation at the Cambridge Science Festival about the intersection of AI and art. It was an exciting opportunity. But I also hadn't done an in-person hands-on workshop like this before. I needed someone – or something – to help me talk out my ideas. That something turned out to be ChatGPT's advanced voice feature. This feature came out in the summer of 2024, but often isn't the first use case that comes to mind. As a full-time creator of over 10 years, I'm constantly sussing out new tools to see which ones are actually helpful, versus which features are just more hot air. And with how fast ChatGPT has been rolling out new features and upgrades, OpenAI has kept me busy. It's also made me realize a lot of people using ChatGPT aren't aware of all the different things the chatbot can currently do. (Disclosure: Ziff Davis, CNET's parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.) Meet industry creators, contributors and emerging thought leaders that have paired with CNET's award-winning editorial team to provide you with unique content from different perspectives. Meet our contributors The difference between ChatGPT's standard and advanced voice modes The main difference between ChatGPT's standard voice and advanced voice is that standard voice uses text-to-speech engines, whereas advanced voice uses a unified model. In standard mode, the AI creates its response in text first and then a separate voice tool reads the text aloud. While the voice may sound decent, it can feel unnatural and often delayed. A unified model like advanced voice doesn't separate writing and speaking. According to OpenAI's website, advanced voice mode's multimodal model (GPT-4o) works more like a human and adjusts its tone in a smooth flow. In the ChatGPT mobile app's voice interface, standard mode is represented by a black circle in the center of the conversation screen; for advanced mode, it's a blue orb. Advanced mode is a paid feature, but users on ChatGPT's free plan can get limited usage of it each day. The blue orb is listening. Screenshot from Fei Wu What might you use a tool like ChatGPT advanced voice for? Here are two ways I'm incorporating it into my everyday life. Let AI act as a sounding board I'm excited about using advanced voice as a strategic thinking partner to help me work through important and challenging problems. One limitation of ChatGPT is that its base training data only goes up to a certain month and year. While it draws from a wide range of books, articles and web content, it may lack up-to-date knowledge or insight on niche, highly specialized topics. This changes when certain features are enabled, and you can enable these features while also using advanced voice. My favorite ChatGPT prompt features are: Search. Toggle this feature on to have ChatGPT browse the internet and access online information. Toggle this feature on to have ChatGPT browse the internet and access online information. Deep Research. Have ChatGPT search the web and return more detailed insights. (I find this helpful when exploring less mainstream topics.) Have ChatGPT search the web and return more detailed insights. (I find this helpful when exploring less mainstream topics.) Upload. Share files, project briefs or other documents from your device or cloud storage. (Click the "+" icon to access this.) To access one of these features on a computer, click the appropriate feature to enable it, then click the voice button on the right. On desktop, special features can be toggled on before you submit a prompt. Screenshot: Fei Wu Screenshot: Fei Wu Screenshot: Fei Wu To enable ChatGPT features on mobile using advanced voice: Tap on the slider icon. Choose the feature you want to enable. (You'll know it's enabled because its icon will appear below the prompt bubble.) Tap the advanced voice button. Allow advanced voice to respond. Exit the voice window once the response is complete to see the response in writing. Any web sources used to inform the response will appear in the control panel. Prompt features can be toggled on in mobile prior to using advanced voice. If doing web search or deep research, ChatGPT will include some of its sources. Screenshots: Nick Wolny Back to the festival I mentioned at the beginning. Xiang Li is my mom and the artist behind a massive collection of Chinese empresses painted on silk using gemstone watercolors. When I used ChatGPT's advanced voice and asked what it knew about Xiang Li Art, it quickly referenced information we had only updated recently. From interactive AI-powered art exploration to live AI demos, panel discussion and youth engagement activities, we were able to implement several practical ideas during our live event in Cambridge, and they were very well-received. You can be very specific with your questions, and can ask follow-ups to go even deeper. I often like to treat advanced voice like a friend or listening partner rather than a search engine as I work through ideas. More nuanced translation Thanks to advanced voice, when my partner (who primarily speaks English) communicates with my mom (who only speaks Mandarin Chinese), the translations feel more natural. ChatGPT's advanced voice can speak over 50 languages. This model feels much more natural, as it can think, talk, pause and react. This can be a slightly tricky experiment if you're using advanced voice for this purpose for the first time. My prompt usually goes something like this: "Hey ChatGPT, I have two speakers in the room: Adam and my mom Xiang. Adam speaks English, and Xiang speaks Mandarin Chinese. I want you to act as a translator between them. After Adam's done talking, please translate it into Mandarin Chinese for Mom, and vice versa." The only trouble we experience sometimes is timing. ChatGPT may jump in a bit early while someone's still talking. To improve this, we told ChatGPT to listen for the word "Go" before providing translation. I find this type of fine-tuning can be helpful because our speech patterns and intonation differ from person to person, making it challenging for ChatGPT to decipher how to react. After using the feature regularly, I notice it's picking up context in more complex situations. It can recall information in longer conversations, understand subtle nuances and respond to my emotions more accurately. I'm expecting advanced voice to become more intelligent and intuitive over time. Start exploring ChatGPT advanced voice for yourself Advanced voice can answer a broad range of questions, making it a versatile tool for creativity, content creation, problem-solving and even strategic partnership. Currently, advanced voice is available to all ChatGPT users; free users receive a daily limit on advanced voice usage, whereas the limit is much higher for Plus, Pro and Team users. Check out my real-time advanced voice demo here on my YouTube channel. And if you have any questions or ideas for how to grow with advanced voice, connect with me on YouTube and LinkedIn to say hello. Opinions expressed by CNET Perspectives contributors are their own.

OpenAI blocks ChatGPT accounts linked to North Korean IT worker fraud
OpenAI said today it's banned ChatGPT accounts that appear to be tied to the ongoing North Korean IT worker schemes that are plaguing nearly every Fortune 500 company. Why it matters: The new findings suggest that North Korea is advancing its use of AI tools in its years-long pervasive scheme designed to help fund the regime's missiles program. The big picture: North Korean IT workers have for years posed as U.S. citizens to land remote jobs at Western tech companies, generating revenue for the government and, in some cases, collecting IP and sensitive data. Zoom in: OpenAI has found evidence that these banned accounts used ChatGPT to streamline every step of the fraud, including drafting cover letters, solving coding assignments, configuring VPNs and video spoofing tools, and even writing scripts to keep laptops active and appear online. The actors also attempted get ChatGPT to automate resumes en masse based on specific job descriptions, skill templates and U.S. persona profiles they've created. They also used ChatGPT to help recruit people in the United States to run so-called laptop farms, where North Korean workers house their company-issued laptops. The intrigue: In its February report, OpenAI had only seen evidence of AI being used to build fake identities. This time, it found signs of workflow automation and outsourcing — a sign of operational maturity, Flossman said.
