Chhattisgarh's first govt-led cold chain and irradiation facility to boost tribal incomes in Dantewada
This cutting-edge infrastructure, the first government-led facility of its kind in India under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) is poised to transform how forest and horticultural produce is stored, processed, and marketed in the Bastar region.
Dantewada and the surrounding districts are rich in Minor Forest Produce (MFP) such as tamarind, mahua, wild mango, millets, and indigenous spices. However, due to the absence of proper storage, preservation processes, and value addition infrastructure, an estimated 10–20 per cent of these produce are lost or perish each year.
To address these critical issues, land acquisition for the project has been completed, and an agreement has been signed with the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology to implement irradiation technology. The facility is now on track to become operational.
This comprehensive facility integrates cold storage, gamma irradiation, processing, and logistics infrastructure to extend the shelf life of produce, reduce spoilage, and significantly improve marketability.

BPIA seeks nods to decommission old ATC tower
Bhubaneswar: Biju Patnaik International Airport authorities have recently sought DGCA clearance to decommission its old air traffic control (ATC) tower, which served as a backup for six months after a new facility became operational in 2023. "Once DGCA grants permission for decommissioning, we may decide to dismantle the tower and repurpose the space. However, we still need a backup facility for the new ATC, and we are considering using the anti-hijacking building for that," said airport director Prasanna Pradhan. All rooms in the old ATC tower are now vacant, with equipment, electrical systems, and communication and navigation machines shifted to the new tower. "A DGCA team may inspect the old tower before deciding on decommissioning. Based on future plans and possible privatisation, a final decision will be taken," a senior airport officer said. The new ATC tower, commissioned with approval from DGCA and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), is equipped with BEL-made systems. Its automation platform, developed indigenously under the Make in India initiative, features advanced technology to streamline air traffic control, reduce workload for ATC officers, increase capacity, and minimise delays. "The ATC has seen a rise in air traffic, particularly since night and international operations began. The airport is also a preferred diversion point for flights from neighbouring airports during bad weather. In light of these challenges, the new ATC is performing well in meeting growing demands," Pradhan said. The old tower stands 23.46 metres tall, compared to the new tower's 44.2 metres. PM Fasal Bima Yojana: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan is set to distribute Rs 3,200 crore to over 30 lakh farmers across the country today. He said that soon money will be distributed to farmers in many states of the country in lieu of their damaged crops. During a program organized in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan will digitally transfer crop insurance claim amount of Rs 3,200 crore to 30 lakh farmer beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) on Monday. Apart from Chauhan, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Union Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Chaudhary and State Agriculture Minister Kirori Lal Meena will also be present in the program. According to an official statement, out of the total claim amount under crop insurance, Rs 1,156 crore will be transferred to the farmers of Madhya Pradesh, Rs 1,121 crore to the farmers of Rajasthan, Rs 150 crore to the farmers of Chhattisgarh and Rs 773 crore to the farmers of other states. The Agriculture Minister said that the Center has implemented a new simplified claim settlement system in the interest of farmers, under which proportional payment of claims will be made only on the basis of central subsidy, without waiting for the premium contribution of the state. Fine will be imposed if money is not paid The Agriculture Minister said that from the Kharif 2025 session, if any state government delays its subsidy contribution, then a penalty of 12 percent will be imposed on it. Since the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in 2016, claims worth Rs 1.83 lakh crore have been settled under it, while farmers have paid a premium of only Rs 35,864 crore. What Is PM Fasal Bima Yojana? The government launched the crop insurance scheme in 2016 to protect farmers from crop damage due to weather and disaster. Under this, farmers can get their crops insured by paying a nominal premium. If their crops are damaged due to weather or any other reason, then insurance can be claimed. To settle the claim, the government surveys the destroyed crops and compensates for whatever loss occurs. The PMFBY beneficiary list is not publicly released with names and details of all beneficiaries. Instead, farmers can check their individual application status using their policy ID or receipt number on the official PMFBY portal.
