Chelsea defender Levi Colwill set for lengthy absence following ACL surgery

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is set to miss a significant portion of the upcoming season after undergoing successful surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The Blues kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on August 17, but Enzo Maresca will not have the 22-year-old at his disposal after Colwill sustained the injury in training at their Cobham base. The Colwill blow could possibly open the door for Jorrel Hato, the Blues' new signing from Ajax. A Chelsea statement read: 'Defender Levi Colwill has today undergone successful surgery to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. 'The 22-year-old had reported back to Cobham for pre-season at the start of this week, before unfortunately sustaining the injury in training. 'Medical assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action. 'Levi will now begin his recovery and be supported by the club's medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.'

Glenn McGrath predicts Australia to win the Ashes 5-0 and names key battle

Glenn McGrath has made his obligatory prediction ahead of the Ashes, once again forecasting a 5-0 whitewash by Australia. McGrath's bold prediction has become part of Ashes tradition, although it is rarely an accurate one – Australia have not won all five Tests since 2013-14. But England have not won any Test match in Australia since 2011, and the bowling great is convinced that trend will continue when the rivals meet over November, December and January. 'It's very rare for me to make a prediction, isn't it?' McGrath joked, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live. 'And I can't make a different one: five-nil. 'I'm very confident with our team. When you've got Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon firing in their home conditions, it's going to be pretty tough. Plus, that track record England have had, it'd be interesting to see if they can win a Test.' England have arguably the best middle order in Test cricket, with Joe Root, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes at No 4, No 5 and No 6 in the batting. And McGrath sees their battle with the experienced Australian bowling attack as key to the outcome. 'This series will be a big one for Root,' said McGrath. 'He's never really done that well in Australia, he's not even got a 100 over there, so he'll be keen to get out there. He's in fine form. 'Brook's the one that I've enjoyed watching. He just goes out there, plays his game, and takes it on. The Australians will need to get on him pretty early. Ben Duckett is such an aggressive opener. Zak Crawley would be keen to score a few more runs than he has previously. 'It's the top order or top and middle order of England against the Australian fast bowlers and Lyon. That's going to be a big match-up.'

Tottenham are interested in £52m-rated Serie A star as Thomas Frank looks to bolster his playmaking options - with James Maddison to miss most of the coming season with an ACL tear

Tottenham are considering a move for £52million Como midfielder Nico Paz after learning James Maddison will miss most of the season. Paz is a highly rated Argentina international and Spurs are on his trail — although they are yet to make a bid for the 20-year-old. Spurs will be without Maddison for several months after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The 28-year-old suffered the injury during the draw with Newcastle in South Korea last weekend in an innocuous challenge. Spurs manager Thomas Frank later confirmed the injury was to the same knee Maddison had injured last season, which meant he missed the Europa League final victory over Manchester United. He had tests after arriving back in the UK, and the club's initial fears that he had damaged his cruciate ligament were realised. A Spurs statement read: 'We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. 'His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team. Everyone at Tottenham wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.' Mohammed Kudus can assume Maddison's role but Spurs had already been looking to strengthen centrally, notably in their attempts to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest. Dejan Kulusevski has also been ruled out of the start of the season, after knee surgery in May, leaving Frank desperate for creative options.
