Amid controversy over the announced participation of Israeli academics in the Fifth World Forum of Sociology, scheduled to take place from July 6 to 11 at Mohammed V University in Rabat, the International Sociological Association (ISA) has decided to suspend the membership of the Israeli Sociological Association, effectively excluding its representatives from the event. The forum is being organized in partnership with the Moroccan Sociological Association.
The decision was confirmed by Driss Essanhaji, a professor of sociology at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez and a board member of the Moroccan Sociological Association. «Two days ago, we discussed within the board of the Moroccan Sociological Association, host of the forum, a statement that was meant to express our rejection of the participation of Israeli academics», he said in a Facebook post on Sunday evening. «But the discussion was not concluded due to the lack of a clear position from the International Association. That led us to continue the dialogue and negotiations with its officials, resulting in an unprecedented decision to suspend the Israeli Sociological Association's membership», he added.
Essanhaji noted that an official statement from the International Sociological Association is expected in the coming hours or days.
In a prior official statement, the Moroccan Sociological Association emphasized that hosting the forum was conditional on upholding its values and principles, especially those concerning Morocco's core national causes, foremost among them the Palestinian question.
«From the beginning of the preparations», the statement said, «the association, through its structures and its members, has made it clear that hosting the forum must be contingent upon respecting Moroccan values and the positions tied to them».
The association also strongly condemned «Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and all aspects of their existence», describing it as «systematic genocide» aimed at denying Palestinians their right to an independent state, sovereignty, and dignity. It urged the international community to «assume its responsibility in halting these crimes and in securing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, in the interest of regional and global peace».
It also stressed that respect for academic ethics, as set out in the statutes of the International Sociological Association, requires compliance with relevant international covenants, particularly regarding the Palestinian cause when organizing or programming conferences.
The Moroccan Sociological Association further clarified that its engagement with the International Association, dating back to its bid to host the forum, «can in no way be interpreted as tacit approval of any narrative that undermines Palestinian rights».
The association concluded by asserting that ongoing Israeli actions in Palestine «make it impossible to welcome any representative of this occupying entity, even in scientific or academic settings», citing Morocco's official stance, the sentiments of its people, and the deep historical and cultural bonds linking Morocco to the Arab and Islamic world.
The Fifth World Forum of Sociology, held under the theme «Knowledge of Justice in the Anthropocene», is expected to draw over 4,500 researchers from nearly 100 countries to explore key global challenges.
The opening ceremony is set to take place at the Mohammed V National Theatre, with academic sessions to be held at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and the Faculty of Economic, Legal, and Social Sciences in Al Irfane, Rabat. The closing ceremony will take place at the Mohammedia School of Engineering.

US Firmly Triples Down on Backing Morocco's Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

Rabat – Algeria's regime and mouthpieces continue to push for a reversal of the US position on Western Sahara. However, the US administration continues to send a clear and consistent response: Washington has recognized Morocco's sovereignty, and that this stance will remain unchanged. Upon his visit to Algeria on July 27, Senior Advisor to the US President Massad Boulos received the same typical questions that US officials get from Polisario advocates and separatist lobbyists regarding the US position on Western Sahara. Boulos, however, once again reiterated and echoed a statement that the US has repeated at least three or four times within just two months. In an interview with Algerian news outlet Al Watan, journalist Majid Makedhi said that the Sahara issue 'remains a point of contention between Algeria and the US.' Same, same 'The recent statement by the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio supporting Morocco's autonomy plan provoked a reaction from Algerian authorities, who regretted this position,' the journalist told Boulos. He also asked the US official for his view on 'what is the 'acceptable-for-all' solution in this matter?' The Algerian journalist, however, failed to receive a different response other than the US's steadfast position. In the interview published today, Boulos reiterated Rubio's remarks that the US recognizes Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, as well as the serious and credible autonomy plan as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute. 'The United States continues to believe that real autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution,' Boulos said. He also noted that Rubio's remarks convey President Trump's position, which also urges all parties to immediately engage in discussions, using Morocco's autonomy initiative as the sole framework to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution. Secretary Rubio made the same position clear to the international community during his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita in April. US President Donald Trump echoed the same position in a letter to King Mohammed VI on the anniversary of Throne Day last week. US Ambassador Nominee Richard Duke Buchan III also reiterated his country's position and highlighted his commitment to continue to advance and defend the same stance once he is confirmed as Washington's envoy to Rabat. All of these developments have not been enough to persuade Algeria's regime to abandon its hostility and lobbying efforts seeking to challenge Morocco's territorial integrity. Morocco's Sahara position, meanwhile, continues to gain momentum with the support of over 115 countries that view the autonomy initiative as the only, or the most credible and serious, basis to resolve the dispute. Despite this momentum, Algeria continues to deploy its mouthpieces to spread disinformation. One of the latest maneuvers involved Algeria's online trolls fabricating a false statement attributed to the US State Department. The forged statement claimed that the US President's message to the King and his reaffirmation of Morocco's sovereignty were fake. In the interview, Boulos also conveyed that he was reassured by Algeria's regime regarding cooperation to tackle security challenges in the Sahel. He said Algeria has shown interest in contributing to regional stability and counterterrorism cooperation. However, these assurances stand in stark contrast to Algeria's reluctance to engage in joint security efforts in the region. Committed to security cooperation while financing terrorism For years, Morocco has urged Algeria to collaborate in regional security operations to address the growing security challenges in the region. Yet, Algeria's regime chooses to interfere in the sovereignty of neighboring states. In April, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger announced the recall of their ambassadors from Algiers, accusing the Algerian government of premeditated hostile action. Algeria's acts continue to receive criticism, particularly as it continues to finance, harbor, and support the Polisario Front, which has been increasingly linked to terrorist networks operating in the Sahel. Most recently, Polisario was the subject of a request submitted by US Congressman Joe Wilson to Congress calling for the designation of the group as a terrorist organization. Mufti of Al-Quds : Aid from King Mohammed VI is a tangible act of solidarity with Gaza

On the directive of King Mohammed VI, president of the Al-Quds Committee, Morocco has dispatched urgent humanitarian and medical aid to the Palestinian people, with a focus on Gaza's residents. This tangible support aims to alleviate the hardships faced by those living «under difficult conditions and blockade», according to the Mufti of Al-Quds and Palestine, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein. In a statement to MAP, the Mufti highlighted that this generous gesture exemplifies Morocco's active solidarity with the Palestinian people during these challenging times. Sheikh Muhammad Hussein further remarked that this initiative underscores Morocco's steadfast commitment to bolstering the resilience of the Palestinians. It also reinforces the kingdom's stance as a champion of just causes in the Arab world, with the Palestinian issue at the forefront, he added. The sovereign had instructed the dispatch of urgent humanitarian and medical aid to the brotherly Palestinian people, especially those in the Gaza Strip. The aid, totaling nearly 180 tons, includes essential foodstuffs, milk, and products specifically for children, along with medicines and surgical equipment for the most vulnerable populations.

UK Recognized Morocco's Sovereignty Over Western Sahara Back in 1721

Marrakech – 'Morocco's rule over Western Sahara is widely accepted,' declared a recent The Guardian headline, reflecting the growing international consensus behind the North African country's territorial integrity. This acknowledgment recalls a centuries-old reality: Britain's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara dates back to the Treaty of Friendship of 1721. The historic treaty, signed in Fez on January 23, 1721, during the reign of King George I, explicitly addresses Morocco's Sultan Moulay Ismail as 'King of Fez, Mequinez, Morocco, and all the West of Africa.' This unambiguous diplomatic language confirms that Britain considered the territories now known as Western Sahara (Sakia El Hamra and Rio de Oro) as integral parts of Morocco's sovereign domain – a conclusive historical proof of Morocco's legitimate territorial rights. The Anglo-Moroccan alliance, one of the world's oldest diplomatic relationships, originated even earlier with correspondence between Queen Elizabeth I and Sultan Ahmad al-Mansour in the late 16th century. This foundation of strategic trust predated Morocco's Treaty of Peace and Friendship with the United States by several decades, testifying to the kingdom's long-standing status as a fully sovereign and globally respected nation. Beyond that, the UK was the sole European power that, prior to Morocco's subjugation by France and Spain in 1912, had signed the treaty of March 13, 1895, explicitly recognizing present-day Western Sahara as Moroccan territory. Britain later betrayed this recognition when it colluded with France in the secret agreement of April 1904, permitting France to grant Spain a 'sphere of influence' in southern Morocco without consulting the kingdom – despite Morocco remaining an independent, sovereign country. This historical treachery culminated in the Franco-Spanish agreement of October 1904 that handed Spain the Sahara in 'full possession and sovereignty' – a colonial land grab executed without Morocco's consent. The dispute was manufactured through European imperial machinations, not through any legitimate question of territorial sovereignty. Britain's recent support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan obliterates this colonial-era injustice, albeit after a shameful period of diplomatic equivocation. World rejects Algeria's proxy game In June, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita signed a joint communiqué recognizing Morocco's autonomy proposal as 'the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for a lasting resolution of the dispute.' This decisive British stance follows similar endorsements from the United States under President Trump and France under President Macron. As Andrew Rosemarine noted in his The Guardian letter, 'The majority of the population in the Sahara welcomes Morocco's sovereignty and development of its economy.' The UK's declaration represents another crushing blow to Algeria's disintegrating separatist agenda. The Algerian regime, a military junta cobbled together merely 62 years ago, continues to desperately cling to its bankrupt project while Morocco boasts an 800-year history of diplomatic relations with Britain. Algeria's stunted foreign policy establishment now finds itself increasingly cornered and besieged, responding with feeble, unconvincing statements that expose its deepening isolation. Algeria's military rulers, utterly devoid of legitimacy, have constructed their entire political identity around an artificial conflict engineered to undermine Morocco. The faltering Algerian regime stubbornly props up the Polisario Front, a proxy militia increasingly condemned as a terrorist organization. Even more damning, Algiers contemptuously turned a deaf ear to King Mohammed VI's extended olive branch in his recent throne day speech – a telling demonstration of a regime pathologically incapable of pursuing regional peace and prosperity. The recent initiative in the US Congress to officially designate the Polisario as a terrorist group has sent shockwaves through Algiers, unmasking the regime's complicity with extremism under the cynical guise of 'self-determination.' The recent avalanche of international declarations supporting Morocco's territorial integrity signals the death knell for Algeria's separatist fantasy. The UK's forceful backing, coming just after Kenya abandoned its pro-Polisario stance, pushes Morocco to the brink of total victory in this decades-long conflict. The British commitment of five billion pounds for development projects throughout Morocco, specifically including the southern provinces, demolishes any remaining pretense about London's position on Morocco's sovereignty. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Britain's backing carries exceptional weight. This historical correction with sweeping strategic implications arrives at a particularly humiliating moment for Algeria – during its temporary membership on the Security Council, where it had foolishly hoped to sabotage Morocco's diplomatic momentum. The three European powers most responsible for the genesis of the conflict – France, Spain, and the UK – have now surrendered to Morocco's position, acknowledging both historical reality and strategic necessity. This irreversible shift in the global consensus proves that Morocco's approach to resolving the territorial dispute has triumphed over Algeria's obsolete separatist fantasies. The Algerian regime, drowning in its diplomatic failures, now watches helplessly as its fabricated narrative crumbles. The Kabranat (military officers) in Algiers are experiencing one of their most severe moments of diplomatic disorientation following the political earthquake triggered by the US Congress initiative. The military rulers who have staked their existence on nurturing a 'hybrid separatist project' now stand naked before the world, scrambling between American congressional offices, desperately attempting to swallow the catastrophe before it's permanently recorded in international registries.
