WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — One City of Wichita Falls employee recently won the Community Partner of the Year Award, which thanks those in the community for being active advocates and forcing change that helps Sheppard Air Force Base.
The 82nd Mission Support Group awarded Karen Montgomery-Gagne the Community Partner of the Year. Gagne officially received this award on March 7 and will receive special recognition at the city council meeting on Tuesday, March 18.
Commander Colonel John Hollister from the 82nd Mission Support Group praised Gagne for being a 'critical component' of the mission's continued success.
'We wanted to take the time to ensure that we were thanking those in the community that help SAFB. Mrs. Montgomery-Gagne has been a constant advocate and force for change to help advance the training missions,' Hollister said. 'Specific instances were taking the lead drafting the grant package for the DEAAG, advancing language to the 4A/4B boards for economic assistance to both DEAAG and BASH weed control. In addition, she is continually in communications with multiple base agencies regarding everything from utilities to obstructions in the local air space.'
Gagne is the city's principal planner and has partnered with SAFB, the Sheppard Military Affairs Committee, and the Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce on three different grant programs, including the Defense Economic Adjustment Assistant Grant Program.
'I feel very honored I have been given the opportunity both professionally and personally to be involved with Sheppard Air Force Base through the ENJJPT program,' Gagne said. 'I have enjoyed working with so many wonderful people at the 82nd while also getting to know all of the incredible people that come through Wichita Falls through ENJJPT. This community is very blessed to have this Air Force installation here locally.'
She and her family have been ENJJPT co-sponsors for the Italian delegation since 2013. They welcome new students when they arrive in Wichita Falls, which allows the students to connect locally.
Director of Development Services Terry Floyd expressed gratitude for Gagne and praised her hard work for SAFB and the entire community.

Long Island man meets kin of stranger who donated life-saving liver to him: ‘She was my angel'

Claire Rossi loved giving gifts – and her most important one saved a Long Island grandfather's life. Rossi became an 'angel' to Carlos Riley when her Patchogue family donated the late great-grandmother's liver to the Commack native – paving the way for a heartfelt meeting Monday. 'What she did, she didn't know me, she just did it for somebody to save a life,' said an emotional Riley, 65, in front of Rossi's relatives, including her husband of 55 years, at the headquarters for the nonprofit organ-donation group LiveOn NY in Long Island City, Queens. 3 Carlos Riley hugs Claire Rossi's daughter Annalisa Rossi in a heartfelt meeting Monday. Stephen Yang for the New York Post 'Without her, I won't be here,' said Rossi, who was within months of dying without the organ donation. 'She was like my angel,' he said of the 70-year-old Rossi. 'Just put it that way, she was my angel. She saved my life, in combination with the doctors.' Loved ones said Rossi, who lived in Queens and later on Long Island, enjoyed spoiling her family with Italian food and presents, especially around the holidays, and donating bundles of clothes to strangers in need. Doing for others was her 'love language,' they said. She died in February 2024, and while she wasn't a listed organ donor, her family decided she could offer 'her last gift.' Riley received his new liver on the 29th of that month. 'So this was her last gift, and I couldn't be more proud of her,' said the donor's 55-year-old daughter, Annalisa Rossi. 3 Riley poses next to his wife and daughter while holding his late donor's photo. Stephen Yang for the New York Post 'And I know she's smiling, and I know she's happy, because this is something that she really just loved to do all her life.' Riley, who was joined by his wife and daughter, said he never thought he'd be connected with a donor after doctors delivered grim news to him. 'One day, the doctors told me, 'You drink too much.' They told me if I don't have a donor I'm going to die in a few months,' he said. 'So one day they told me, they called me, 'We have a liver for you.' … I didn't know anything, I just knew I was still alive and I have an opportunity to live longer.' As he was recovering from his organ-donation surgery, Rossi's family mailed him a 'beautiful letter' asking how he was doing and hoping to meet one day. Riley and Rossi's family wrote back and forth for months leading up to the meeting, where Riley could report his blood work is now fine and liver is 'perfect. 'Now, I'm not surprised, it's an Italian liver,' he quipped. 3 Claire Rossi was remembered as a gift giver. Stephen Yang for the New York Post While Riley oozes of appreciation, Rossi's family said it also had plenty to give thanks for. 'I just want to say thank you, because this kind of helped keep my grandma's name live on. It's helping her live on,' said granddaughter Alyssa Morales, 33. 'It was like keeping her spirits alive kind of made her passing a little bit easier, knowing that she saved someone's life.' Her widower, Joseph Rossi, can't help missing his wife but told Riley, 'I'm so glad she saved your life. ' I'm happy she saved a life.'

I'm a dietitian. Here are my 10 favorite things to buy at Trader Joe's for quick, easy meals for one.

I keep spatchcocked lemon-rosemary chicken ready to go in my fridge. I keep Trader Joe's marinated chicken in my fridge for quick dinners. Having an already-prepped chicken saves me some time and energy for lazy-day meals. I typically pop the spatchcocked lemon-rosemary chicken in the oven with some potatoes and zucchini for a balanced meal of protein, starch, and vegetables on one tray. Trader Joe's spinach tortellini is the star of a quick and cozy dinner. Trader Joe's spinach tortellini is perfect on nights when I'm too tired to make a big meal but want something warm and cozy. The cheese- and spinach-filled pasta is ready in just two to three minutes. A one-cup serving is a good source of protein, fiber, and iron, and only has 230 milligrams of sodium. Add some roasted vegetables on top for a little extra fiber and flavor, and this is the perfect lazy-day meal. The chain's shrimp seafood burgers are easy to prepare. I like to bake these shrimp patties, but you also have the option to grill or pan-fry them. The burgers have a pretty short ingredient list and contain only 210 milligrams of sodium, leaving room for tons of toppings and condiments. I serve them with tomato and lettuce on top of a whole-wheat bun for some extra fiber. Italian-style meatballs are the perfect final touch for a filling pasta dinner. Trader Joe's Italian-style meatballs are one of my favorite frozen foods to have on hand. They're fully cooked, so they're even microwave-friendly for those who don't have an oven or stovetop. Of course, the Italian-style meatballs are perfect to add protein to pasta dishes, but I also like to use them for sandwiches and soups. I spice up dinner with a Cuban-style citrus-garlic bowl. Frozen TV-style dinners will always be a comforting, quick fix, and Trader Joe's has tons to offer. I especially love the Cuban-style bowl because of its balance of carbs and protein and its great flavor. Frozen dinners with thick sauces or big seasoning packets are typically going to be high in sodium, fat, or both. So, I'll sometimes cook extra pasta or rice and mix it into the bowl to distribute the sodium or fat. This way, the sauce and seasonings still coat the ingredients — and I can have extra portions with cut-down sodium and fat content. Meal prep is easy with Trader Joe's mirepoix. One of the most time-consuming parts of cooking is the preparation, so I love keeping precut vegetables on hand to make meals feel a lot less labor-intensive. Trader Joe's mirepoix is a basic combo of celery, carrots, and onions that are perfect to add to soups, stews, sautées, or sauces. Oven-roasted chicken breast is good for snacks and lunches. Sometimes, making a meal that reminds me of a school lunch is just what I need. I usually keep Trader Joe's oven-roasted chicken-breast slices on hand as a base for a refreshing sandwich. Add them on top of whole-wheat bread with some lettuce, tomato, and cheese for a simple, no-cook lunch. They're also great to have on hand as a snack rolled up with cheese and paired with fruit. I swear by Trader Joe's sweet-potato gnocchi with butter and sage. Though Trader Joe's cauliflower gnocchi has had its reign, I also want to give the sweet-potato version some time to shine. It's not always available, but Trader Joe's sweet-potato variation has tons of flavor and tastes similar to traditional gnocchi. I like to prepare the sweet-potato gnocchi on the stovetop with some precooked sausage and vegetables for an easy one-pan meal. Lentils can add filling fiber and protein to just about any meal. Fiber- and protein-rich lentils are a great ingredient to base any meal around. Trader Joe's steamed lentils have just a bit of seasoning, so they're not overloaded with sodium and can be enjoyed hot or cold. I love using them for a classic lentil soup, but you can also add them to salads or wraps. Ready-to-eat Mediterranean-style salad kits are a lunch staple. When I buy Trader Joe's premade salads, I always make sure they include some protein source so I know I won't be hungry again an hour after I eat it. Between the feta, chickpeas, flatbread, and tomatoes, Trader Joe's Mediterranean-style salad has a good balance of ingredients that keeps me satisfied.
