Trump Indicates Tariff Reductions May Lead to US-India Trade Agreement
Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) said the upcoming US-India trade negotiations would be to target 'far, far lower tariffs' and have 'a structure in place' that will allow the two nations to compete fairly. 'This is going to be a very new type of opportunity—one where we can walk in and compete on a level playing field. Right now, India has not opened up its market, but I think they have not done that, but we will see. If they do that, we will probably make a deal with substantially lower tariffs,' Donald Trump was quoted as saying. India and the US have been negotiating over a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) before the crucial July 9 deadline of the 90-day pause on India-US tariffs escalations. At the same time, India has hardened its stand on the agricultural sector as the high-stakes trade negotiations with the United States approached a make or break stage, government sources said on Monday. The Indian team led by Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal had extended its stay in Washington. Two days of Trump on US-India Trade Talks were scheduled on Thursday and Friday but the two countries have decided to extend the dialogue as both sides were trying to rush through an interim trade agreement before the crucial July 9 deadline, a day ahead of the World Trade Organization's MC12 meeting, reported ANI. The decision to extend the US-India trade talks came as both India and the US are staring at the possibility of the resumption of 26% reciprocal tariffs on trade following expiry of the three-month window period. As part of a tit-for-tat tariff war, these punitive tariffs were announced on each other's imports during the Trump administration on April 2. The tariffs were put on hold for 90 days but will snap back into place if both countries fail to find a deal by July 9.

India is set to take over the BRICS Chairmanship at the Brazil Summit next year. "The theme of the Rio Summit is 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Governance'... India will be holding the chair of the BRICS next year..." Secretary Ravi said. "Our Prime Minister will arrive on the July 5, but the main programme is on July 5. As you know, the format is very clear - there are full members, which are 10; there are about 12 partner countries; there are 8 invitee countries that are heads of state at the government level; seven heads of regional and multilateral bodies," he said. During the Summit, PM Modi will exchange views on key global issues, including reform of global governance, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, responsible use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, and economic and financial matters. On the Summit's expected outcomes, Ravi said, "The BRICS process is led by the chair, and they set the agenda. But the decisions are on a consensus-based format. We are hopeful that there will be four deliverables, although discussions are still continuing: the leaders' declaration, the leaders' statement on global governance and artificial intelligence, the leaders' framework declaration on climate finance, and BRICS participation for the elimination of diseases." He said, "There will also be, in addition, four reports that will be submitted to the leaders." Focusing on the bilateral engagements during the visit of PM Modi, MEA Secretary (East) P Kumaran said, "The BRICS Summit segment of the Prime Minister's visit will be on July 5-6, and the State visit segment will be on July 8... During the State visit, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with President Lula. Bilateral agreements will be signed on renewable energy, agricultural research, and security cooperation. Prime Minister Modi is visiting Argentina on July 4 on an official visit. Both leaders will hold talks on economic and trade interests to further strengthen bilateral relations." In addition to attending the BRICS sessions, the Prime Minister will hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Summit. For the State Visit to Brazil, PM Modi will travel to Brasilia, where he will hold bilateral discussions with President Lula on expanding the Strategic Partnership between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, including trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people linkages.

Quad calls for punishing perpetrators of Pahalgam attack
The Quad grouping has called for bringing the perpetrators, organisers and financiers of the Pahalgam terror attack to justice without any delay and urged U.N. member nations to extend cooperation for it. The Foreign Ministers of the four-nation grouping condemned the April 22 attack in the strongest terms that claimed the lives of 26 civilians and firmly pitched for action against cross-border terrorism. In a joint statement, the Ministers, however, did not mention Pakistan or the four-day military conflict between the Indian and Pakistani militaries in May. The meeting at the U.S. capital city on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and her Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya. The Quad Foreign Ministers condemned "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, that claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, while injuring several others. "We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and extend our heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery to all those injured," they said. "We call for the perpetrators, organisers, and financiers of this reprehensible act to be brought to justice without any delay and urge all UN Member States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard," they added. The Quad meeting also announced the grouping's plan to launch a Quad Ports of the Future partnership in Mumbai this year. The Ministers said they remained seriously concerned about the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea. "We reiterate our strong opposition to any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion," they said, referring to Chinese military actions.
