India to need 1 million AI professionals by 2026, says report amid tech education overhaul
NEW DELHI: India is poised to see a massive surge in demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) professionals, with projections estimating the need for one million skilled individuals by 2026, according to the report India's AI Revolution: A Roadmap to Viksit Bharat, released by the Union Ministry of Electronics & IT.

As the country aspires to become a USD 23-USD 35 trillion economy by 2047, higher education--particularly in engineering--is undergoing a fundamental transformation to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market shaped by AI, automation, and interdisciplinary innovation.
Engineering education is at the heart of this shift. According to the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the number of approved B.
Tech seats for the 2024-25 academic year has risen to 14.9 lakh--a nearly 16 per cent increase over four years. This growth is largely driven by a more than 50 per cent rise in seats for Computer Science and allied streams such as AI/ML, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and Blockchain--mirroring strong industry demand.
India's tech education landscape is increasingly embracing interdisciplinary and industry-integrated learning to nurture a new generation of engineers who can code, create, collaborate, and lead innovation.
The transition from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) to STEAM, adding Arts to the mix, is gaining ground, blending technical knowledge with design thinking, communication, psychology, law, and business.
Recently, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) announced the launch of Symbiosis Artificial Intelligence Institute (SAII), an artificial intelligence (AI)-focused institute.

According to the institute, SAII will integrate cutting-edge AI into academic programmes and research.

India, EU likely to go for comprehensive FTA; GI pacts to follow later
India and the European Union (EU) are likely to agree upon a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) instead of an interim deal, an official said on Tuesday. However, the proposed investment treaty and a pact on geographical indications (GI) may not be concluded simultaneously. The official said that the situation remains dynamic in the free trade agreement negotiations. Negotiations for the "comprehensive agreement" between India and the EU are progressing at a rapid pace, and the deal could be concluded before the year-end, the official added. Earlier, there were discussions that an early harvest trade pact may be finalised before going for a comprehensive deal. In June 2022, India and the 27-nation EU bloc resumed negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement, an investment protection agreement and a pact on GIs after a gap of over eight years. A GI is primarily an agricultural, natural or manufactured product (handicrafts and industrial goods) originating from a definite geographical territory. The negotiations stalled in 2013 due to differences over the level of opening up of the markets. On February 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the European Commission President agreed to seal the much-awaited free trade deal by the end of this year. The India-EU trade pact negotiations cover 23 policy areas or chapters, including Trade in Goods, Trade in Services, Investment, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, Technical Barriers to Trade, Trade Remedies, Rules of Origin, Customs and Trade Facilitation, Competition, Trade Defence, Government Procurement, Dispute Settlement, Intellectual Property Rights, Geographical Indications, and Sustainable Development. India's bilateral trade in goods with the EU was USD 137.41 billion in 2023-24 (exports worth USD 75.92 billion and imports worth USD 61.48 billion), making it the largest trading partner for goods. The EU market accounts for about 17 per cent of India's total exports, while the EU's exports to India make up 9 per cent of its total overseas shipments. In addition, the bilateral trade in services, in 2023, between India and the EU was estimated at USD 51.45 billion. Speaking to reporters here, French Minister of Foreign Trade Laurent Saint-Martin said that the agreement can be concluded in the coming weeks or months. "I am pretty optimistic about the fact that we can have an agreement in the coming weeks, coming months, because we have to showcase to the world that we do believe in trade, in freer trade, and not in a trade war. So this is what we agreed on with the minister," the French minister said after a bilateral meeting with Goyal.

Zydus announces plan to acquire US manufacturing units of Agenus Inc
Zydus Lifesciences on Tuesday announced its plan to acquire Agenus Inc's US-based biologics CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control) facilities, marking the Gujarat-based firm's entry into the global biologics contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) business. Agenus Inc. is a clinical-stage immuno-oncology company developing immune therapies, which effectively combat cancer. Zydus, in a statement, said it is set to acquire two biologics manufacturing facilities, located in Emeryville and Berkeley, California, for an upfront consideration of USD 75 million and contingent payment of USD 50 million to be paid over three years, 'subject to achievement of certain revenue milestones'. With this acquisition, Zydus claims it will become a one-stop solution provider across the entire development spectrum of biologics, right from preclinical to toxicology studies, clinical development and now manufacturing. Zydus's CDMO business will operate as an independent entity and will house the acquired manufacturing capabilities, according to the statement. Further, Zydus will also become an exclusive contract manufacturer for Agenus and will provide manufacturing services for clinical and commercial supply of two identified Phase-3 ready immuno-oncology products, Botensilimab (BOT) and Balstilimab (BAL). In addition, Zydus will have the first right of negotiation to manufacture any of the future pipeline products developed by Agenus, the statement further read. Dr Sharvil Patel, Managing Director (MD) of Zydus Lifesciences, said, 'The acquisition will give Zydus a strategic foothold in the US for biologics manufacturing in the global hub for biotech innovation, California. It will enhance our ability to partner with innovation-centric entities, advancing new products and prioritising patient-centric solutions. This move strengthens our long-term biologics vision and positions us to better serve the evolving needs of the global biopharmaceutical industry.'
