N3 Toll urges road users to be cautious amid icy conditions

The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) continues to urge road users to be cautious while driving in icy conditions.

Adverse weather
Thabia Dhoogra, Chief Operating Officer of the N3TC, stated that adverse weather conditions may impact safety, convenience, and mobility on the toll route.

'N3TC urges road users planning to travel on the N3 Toll Route to keep a close watch on the changing weather as the South African Weather Service continues to warn of bitterly cold, icy conditions, thunderstorms, damaging winds, and the possibility of snowfall along high-lying parts of the route.'

Dhoogra warned that the weather conditions may impact road safety, and could result in traffic congestion, delays, and temporary road closures should driving conditions become treacherous.
'Please check the most recent travel status before embarking on your trip, and allow extra travel time to reach your destination safely. Inclement weather often results in traffic congestion and extensive delays.
'We recommend motorists keep sufficient emergency provisions in their vehicles, including water, food, medication, warm clothes and blankets, cellphones, chargers, backup power banks, and basic first aid equipment,' Dhoogra said.
'Defensive driving'
Dhoogra urged motorists to respect the rules of the toll route.
'Road users can also assist emergency services to reduce safety threats by driving defensively and responding appropriately to the prevailing conditions. Remain patient and alert, anticipate potential hazards, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance in order to react in good time to potential risks
'N3TC's route services teams, together with our partners in the road incident management system (RIMS), are already deployed and are ready to assist in any eventuality. Now it's up to all of us to share the road responsibly,' said Dhoogra.

Eastern Cape floods: 9 dead, 11 children missing as cold front batters province
The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has activated its disaster management teams in response to the severe cold front and associated weather conditions that have struck the province since Monday. SA News reports that the provincial government, in a statement issued yesterday, confirmed that emergency response teams have been dispatched to various areas and are working around the clock to provide critical support to communities impacted by heavy rainfall, strong winds and snowfall. The South African Weather Service has issued an Orange Alert Level 6, warning of disruptive snowfall in high-lying regions of the province, potential road closures, flooding and possible power interruptions. Several roads have been affected by the heavy rains, including the R61 from Mthatha to Ngcobo and the N2 to Kokstad near Emakhaphetshwini outside Mthatha. Damages have also been reported to homes in the OR Tambo, Joe Gqabi, and Sarah Baartman districts, as well as in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Rescue teams were dispatched to bolster rescue efforts along the R61 outside Mthatha, where three children were stuck in a tree. The children have since been rescued. The provincial government also confirmed that roads such as Wapadsberg Pass, along the R61 between Nxuba and Graaff-Reinet, have been blanketed in snow, prompting a warning to motorists to drive with extreme caution. 'The provincial government's primary objective is to safeguard lives and infrastructure during this extreme weather event. Community members are advised to remain alert, monitor official updates, and strictly follow safety directives,' the provincial government said. At least seven killed in Eastern Cape floods
The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has confirmed the death of seven people due to recent flooding emanating from inclement weather conditions in the province. These losses occurred amid intense cold, wet, and windy conditions that have severely affected several communities in the province; however, the fatalities have for now been reported from various areas in the OR Tambo District Municipality. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had also issued several warnings for disruptive snow, rainfall, damaging winds, and waves in parts of the province after a cold front made landfall at the weekend. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government stated that the severe weather conditions have also caused significant damage to road infrastructure, displacement of residents, and, unfortunately, loss of life. The Provincial Government's spokesperson Khusela Rantjie said police reports have also confirmed that six bodies were found along Decoligny village in Mthatha, while the seventh body was recovered at Tsolo near Bedlana River. The search is still ongoing regarding a minibus carrying school children that swept away earlier this morning. Rantjie said as disaster management teams work tirelessly to assist affected households and secure the safety of residents, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has deployed MECs to support the O.R. Tambo District Municipality in its efforts to rescue citizens, including ensuring the provision of necessary resources. 'As the weather persists, the province's priority is the safety and well-being of residents, while working to mitigate damage to infrastructure and restore essential services,' Rantjie said. Meanwhile, Mabuyane has emphasised the urgent need for caution, urging community members to avoid flooded areas, remain alert on slippery roads, and promptly report any hazards to authorities. 'This is a devastating reminder of nature's force. We urge everyone to exercise extra caution in areas prone to flooding. Our disaster response teams are on high alert and committed to ensuring the community's safety,' he said. Mabuyane is expected to visit the OR Tambo Municipality district on Wednesday, 11 June.
