Women's quota in India's Parliament likely from 2029 Lok Sabha Elections: Report

Mint2 days ago

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government is planning to roll out reservation of seats for women in Parliament and state assemblies in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, according to a report in The Indian Express.
The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, or the Women's Reservation Bill, reserves one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and Assemblies.
The women's reservation bill is linked to the delimitation process. We are aiming to roll it out in the next election.
"The Census has been announced. Other steps will follow. The women's reservation bill is linked to the delimitation process. We are aiming to roll it out in the next election," the report said, quoting a source.
As per the provisions in the Act, passed in the Parliament in 2023, the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the Assemblies shall come into effect after the delimitation exercise is taken based on the figures from the first Census conducted after the enactment of the Act.
The Union government said on 4 June that India's next census—the exercise to count the population and conduct caste enumeration in the world's most populated country — will be held across India by 1 March 2027.
So to roll out the women's quota in the next Lok Sabha election, the delimitation has to be completed before the announcement of dates for general elections. Delimitation is the process of fixing limits or boundaries of assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in a country. The delimitation depends on Census data.
Linking delimitation with the census has triggered political controversies in the past. The Census date announcement earlier this month reopened the debate on the delimitation with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the centre of planning to reduce Tamil Nadu's parliamentary seats.
Stalin, the DMK chief, demanded an answer from the Union government over the timing for conducting a caste census, highlighting the constitutional mandate that delimitation must follow the census after 2026.
"The Indian Constitution mandates that delimitation must follow the first census after 2026. The BJP has now delayed the census to 2027, making their plan clear to reduce Tamil Nadu's Parliamentary representation," Stalin posted on X.

'Deeply concerned': India urges Iran & Israel to avoid escalation

File photo: PM Modi NEW DELHI: With Israel launching an unprecedented attack on Iran, India was forced to do another delicate balancing act in its response to the dramatic escalation in West Asia as it underlined the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving underlying issues & offered support for de-escalation efforts. PM Narendra Modi said in a post on X that he received a call from his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, who briefed him about the evolving situation. "I shared India's concerns and emphasised the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region," said the PM. Citing its close and friendly relations with both countries, Indian government said in a formal response it stood ready to extend all possible support. Ministry of external affairs said India is closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites. Elevated Rotary Road Being Explored For Medical Square: Gadkari

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: An ambitious project to alleviate traffic woes at the busy Medical Square is being contemplated by Union minister Nitin Gadkari . The Nagpur MP on Thursday said he is ideating upon a project to build an elevated rotary road to help ease the traffic flow. In a brief statement about it, Gadkari said, "At Ashok Chowk, we are planning to construct a signal-less square, like a roundabout rotary. Another thing I have in mind is, Medical Square. To build an elevated road (rotary) there." The Union minister clarified that these are in the conceptualization stage. Regarding the Liberty Square flyover, Gadkari said that the design is faulty, but it will be rectified. "I have already prepared a proposal for Rs34 crore and it has been sent for clearance. A new design has been readied for it," said Gadkari, while addressing the media on Thursday. The flyover has three landings, one at Katol Road, one at Mankapur and one between LIC Square and RBI Square. It's the landing at the latter section which is being redesigned, and it's likely that another landing might connect on the road going towards LIC Square. At this point Gadkari even called his official from the sidelines and enquired about the status of that file. After speaking with the official, Gadkari said "Work will start soon and the problem will be solved. Giving an update on other flyovers of the city, Gadkari first spoke about the Kadbi Chowk flyover going towards Mominpura. "All permissions have been taken and the issue (for delay) is due to encroachment at Mominpura. We have given the work to MahaRail and this will benefit everyone because directly from Mominpura you can connect to Kamptee Road." About the Pachpaoli flyover, Gadkari said, "For the flyover from Kamal Talkies, we are using the latest technology from Malayasia for construction. At Kamal Chowk, we will build a huge market where all vendors will get space." He added that a lot of flyovers have been built or approved for Nagpur, which will ultimately provide succour for traffic movement. In East Nagpur, which has got many flyover projects, Gadkari joked that there is now no space remaining. "MLA Krishna Khopde has got so many projects approved that no space is left vacant. I told him that only a 2m wide lane remains in one of the localities, and maybe we should construct one flyover here too," said Gadkari. One person, a British citizen, has survived and is currently undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the accident. The London-bound Air India flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad and burst into a ball of fire on Thursday moments after takeoff. Ahmedabad/New Delhi, Jun 13 (PTI) British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron said she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad on Friday and shared condolences on behalf of her country in the face of the tragic plane crash a day ago and underlined that the UK and India are 'working together' to establish facts linked with the accident. Overall, at least 265 people, including some on the ground, were killed in the tragedy after the plane crashed into the BJ Medical College complex in Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar area. Talking to PTI in Ahmedabad, Cameron said, 'We have offered consular support to the sole survivor'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the scene of the crash and met the injured at the Ahmedabad civil hospital. He spent around 20 minutes at the crash site. Asked about her meeting with the PM, she said, 'I passed condolence from His Majesty the King and the Queen, from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and from our Foreign Secretary, all of whom are really shocked by what they have seen, and want to offer support.' Besides 169 Indians, 53 British, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals were on board the flight that crashed near the Ahmedabad airport. 'My priority here, at the British Deputy High Commission in Ahmedabad, is to make sure British nationals and their families get the support they need. And, that is why we have 24×7 hotlines for people and their families to reach out,' the UK envoy added. In the early hours of Friday, Cameron posted on X that she and her team have 'visited the crash site' and hospital in Ahmedabad and also shared consular helpline details. 'Colleagues in UK & India are working around the clock to gather information and support British nationals affected,' she said. Later, in another post on X, Cameron said, 'I met with Prime Minister @narendramodi this morning. Investigators on Friday recovered a black box of the fateful flight. 'My thought and prayers are with everybody affected by this crash, particulary those who had loved ones either on the plane or on the ground. But, also it is heartwarming to see the response from both UK and Indian authorities as they are coming together to this crash,' Cameron said. The British national flag flew at half-mast at the British High Commission in Delhi to mourn the loss of lives in the plane crash. The British High Commission in India on Thursday said it was working with local authorities to urgently establish facts about the plane crash and provide support. In its post, the High Commission also shared a link to its travel advisory. On Friday, she also visited Akshardham Temple in Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar. 'It was a sad privilege to offer my prayers at Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar today.
