‘Ayam gunting' seller loses nearly RM20,000 to investment scam
KUALA TERENGGANU: A woman selling 'ayam gunting' lost RM19,050 after falling victim to a fake investment scheme.
Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the 38-year-old victim had come across an investment advertisement on Facebook on April 15.
Drawn in by the offer, she reached out to the suspect, who promised a profit of RM20,060 with an initial investment of only RM300.
'After making the first payment, two women known as Zaharah and Maznah asked the victim to make several more payments to access the promised returns.
'She then made six payments using her savings, pawned jewellery and took out a loan. However, after over a month, she did not receive any returns,' he said in a statement today.
Azli said the victim lodged a police report at 8 pm yesterday after suspecting she had been cheated.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

KUALA LUMPUR: Activist and graphic artist Fahmi Reza claims he was prevented from leaving the country this morning after immigration officers at KLIA informed him that he had been blacklisted. "Today, on my birthday and Hari Raya Aidiladha, I found out I've been blacklisted and barred from leaving the country," he said in a Facebook post earlier today. In his post, he detailed plans for a short two-day trip to Singapore to attend a show featuring two of his favourite punk bands. Fahmi said he arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) around 7.30am to catch a 9.35am flight and proceeded to the international immigration clearance counter, where he was directed to the immigration office. He said the officer asked for his travel documents and destination, then requested printed copies of his boarding pass and flight ticket. Despite showing digital versions on his phone, Fahmi claimed he was instructed to print physical copies himself, even though the office was equipped with a printer. With just minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member assisted him by driving him to a nearby hotel to print the required documents. Upon returning to the immigration office, Fahmi said he was informed that he had not been granted clearance to leave the country. According to him, the officer said that Bukit Aman had not approved his departure but did not provide any further explanation. He was then escorted out of the departure area. The New Straits Times has reached out to the police for comment.

Jobless jailed, fined for hurting son

Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old jobless was jailed six years and fined RM2,000 in default three months for causing hurt to his son with a wooden stick. Shahmar Asecio pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Marlina Ibrahim, to the charge against him. Advertisement He hurt to his 16-year-old son by hitting him with the wood at 11.30am on June 2, this year at a house in Kg Baitam Laut, Membakut. The offence is framed under Section 324/326A of the Penal Code. The court ordered Shahmar to serve the jail sentence concurrently with the sentence for another offence. In mitigation, Shahmar who was not represented asked for a lenient sentence. Advertisement However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiqah Alya urged the court to impose a heavy sentence to deter and give a lesson not only to Shahmar but public at large from committing such offence. The court heard that while the son was in the kitchen Shahmar came from behind and hit him with wood on his shoulder, head and right leg. The victim's mother then tried to stop Shahmar who suddenly took a machete and threatened the victim with the weapon. Cops tracking down eight to help in police probes

SANDAKAN: Police are currently tracking down several individuals identified to assist in investigations related to a number of criminal cases in the district. Advertisement Among those being sought is Yee Kok Wai (MyKad: 621219-12-5433) for an offence under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape; Mohammad Azwan Mukram (MyKad: 960814-12-6277) under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017; and Hisyam Tarang (MyKad: 820304-12-6061) under Section 354 of the Penal Code for using criminal force with intent to outrage modesty. Police are also searching for Mohd Nazrie Mohd Sha (MyKad: 770914-12-5581) for voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code, and Firdawis Daud (MyKad: 860401-12-5489) under Section 46(N) of the Prisons Act 1995. Also wanted is a 31-year-old Indonesian woman, Safawati Taming (Passport No: C3822626), for theft under Section 380 of the Penal Code.
