Calls to save Aberdeen Arts Centre as £660,000 needed to plug funding gap
Aberdeen Arts Centre needs to raise more than half a million pounds to keep its doors open, after a surge in running costs caused a funding gap.
For more than six decades, the beloved venue has been popular with dancers, actors, musicians and artists who have tread the boards at the theatre on King Street.
Home to over 35 local groups, Aberdeen Arts Centre is seeped in the rich history and culture the city has to offer.
But now it's future looks uncertain.
Eve Nicol from Aberdeen Arts Centre told STV News: 'We'll probably have to look at pulling back some of our really crucial services that people are relying on to bring that joy and breath of fresh air to their week, whether that's coming to see stuff on the stage or taking part in our weekly drama and art classes.
'If we're having to reduce the stuff that we're able to do, that's just a little light going out in people's lives and what we're really here to do is to shine a spotlight on Aberdeen's creative community.' STV News Eve Nicol from Aberdeen Arts Centre
Around £660,000 will need to be raised over the next three years – with an initial target of £180,000 by July.
The appeal has already been backed by many famous faces, such as Call the Midwife actress Laura Main.
Campaigners say the venue is vital for the next generation of performers.
Clare Haggart from Phoenix Theatre said: 'It's a very, very special place. The size of the venue is important, because it means so many local companies, dance schools, performing groups, musicians, anything like that can perform here. It's affordable but it's a lovely venue, you can sit anywhere in the auditorium and you'll have a great view of what's happening on stage.' But those behind the organisation say rising costs have caused a funding gap and without urgent support, they may be forced to close their doors.

Sue Cleaver reflects on '25 years of laughs' after Coronation Street exit
Coronation Street actress Sue Cleaver has reflected on '25 years of laughs and tears' following her character's exit from the show. Eileen Grimshaw had a special send-off during Friday's episode of the soap, where she was seen leaving for Thailand alongside her son Jason Grimshaw, played by Ryan Thomas. Cleaver took part in I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022, where she opened up about reconciling with her birth mother, and was eliminated third. She also said her family is 'bizarrely interconnected' to other Coronation Street stars, including Worth who is godmother to one of her half-sisters, while her other half-sister's husband, John Bowe, appeared on the cobbles as Duggie Ferguson. Research fund for rare bone cancer launched in memory of Glasgow DJ
A research fund for a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer has been launched in memory of a Glasgow DJ who died from the disease aged 22. DJ, producer and sound engineer Niamh Jobson died in January just five days before her 23rd birthday after living with osteosarcoma for seven years. Despite enduring multiple rounds of chemotherapy and the eventual loss of her left leg, she remained deeply committed to her music career, performing, producing, and co-hosting the acclaimed Dub Series radio show alongside close friend and fellow DJ Kairogen. The musician's family has established the Niamh Jobson Research Fund to advance treatments for the cancer – which mainly affects teenagers and young adults – and to provide support for those affected. The initiative will officially launch on Saturday, June 28 at Glasgow's SWG3 featuring sets from Kairogen, Danny Greenman, Timescape, VXYX, Harry Mawby and LAZLO – artists who shared the stage with Niamh. Watching her suffer from this heinous disease, while powering through with her impressive and promising career cut far too short by osteosarcoma. 'Creating this fund and launching it in a very 'Niamh' manner, we will be able to assist her dream of helping kids in this position get another chance at life, while also pushing her unique underground club techno sound to the people of Glasgow. New trailer for Wicked sequel offers fans first glimpse of Dorothy
The first full-length trailer for the Wicked sequel offers fans a glimpse of Elphaba's life in exile after flying away to Oz's western lands. Footage from the movie also teases a first look at Dorothy, the protagonist of L Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, who is seen walking down the yellow brick road. Wicked: For Good will see Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, demonised by those in Oz, and transformed into The Wicked Witch Of The West, as she is known in Baum's novel about the fantastical world. It picks off where the first film left off, covering the years after Elphaba parted ways with her friend, Glinda, played by US pop star Ariana Grande. In the trailer the friends sing the song For Good as the Wizard asks Dorothy and her friends to 'bring me the broom of the Wicked Witch Of The West'. It ends with Elphaba saying 'I'm off to see the Wizard' before flying on a broom into the distance with her winged monkeys. The film, directed by Jon M Chu, shows Elphaba continuing her fight for the freedom of Oz's silenced animals while Glinda lives at the palace in Emerald City. Wicked also stars English actor Jonathan Bailey as roguish and carefree prince Fiyero, American actor and singer Ethan Slater as altruistic munchkin student Boq, and Jurassic Park's Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. The films have been adapted from the musical, which was based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel of the same name – which was in turn based on the story first told in Baum's 1900 children's novel, adapted into the 1939 film starring Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale. Wicked: For Good will show in cinemas in the UK and Ireland from November 21.
