Calls to save Aberdeen Arts Centre as £660,000 needed to plug funding gap
For more than six decades, the beloved venue has been popular with dancers, actors, musicians and artists who have tread the boards at the theatre on King Street.
Home to over 35 local groups, Aberdeen Arts Centre is seeped in the rich history and culture the city has to offer.
But now it's future looks uncertain.
Eve Nicol from Aberdeen Arts Centre told STV News: 'We'll probably have to look at pulling back some of our really crucial services that people are relying on to bring that joy and breath of fresh air to their week, whether that's coming to see stuff on the stage or taking part in our weekly drama and art classes.
'If we're having to reduce the stuff that we're able to do, that's just a little light going out in people's lives and what we're really here to do is to shine a spotlight on Aberdeen's creative community.' STV News Eve Nicol from Aberdeen Arts Centre
Around £660,000 will need to be raised over the next three years – with an initial target of £180,000 by July.
The appeal has already been backed by many famous faces, such as Call the Midwife actress Laura Main.
Campaigners say the venue is vital for the next generation of performers.
Clare Haggart from Phoenix Theatre said: 'It's a very, very special place. The size of the venue is important, because it means so many local companies, dance schools, performing groups, musicians, anything like that can perform here. It's affordable but it's a lovely venue, you can sit anywhere in the auditorium and you'll have a great view of what's happening on stage.' At the heart of Aberdeen Arts Centre is the people, giving local performers and artists opportunities to learn their craft and shine on stage.
But those behind the organisation say rising costs have caused a funding gap and without urgent support, they may be forced to close their doors.
Campaigners have only a few weeks to raise thousands of pounds – but they're determined to keep the curtain up and the spotlight shining.

ScotRail rolls with it in busiest 2025 week as Oasis fans flock to Edinburgh
ScotRail had its busiest week of 2025 so far, carrying almost two million passengers as music fans flocked to Oasis reunion concerts. Around 328,000 people travelled with ScotRail on Friday August 8, when Liam and Noel Gallagher and their band took to the stage for the first of three sell-out gigs at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. That total was up by almost a fifth (19%) compared with the same day last year. Meanwhile, a total of 327,000 travellers took to the rails on Saturday, with passenger numbers for that day 12% higher than the same date in 2024, up 12% on 2024. ScotRail added that these days were the busiest its services had been since December 14 last year, when the festive season was in full swing. With the third Oasis concert taking place in the capital on Tuesday August 12, ScotRail said it had carried a total of 1,995,000 people over the week commencing Friday August 8. David Ross, chief operating officer at the rail operator said: 'This week once again confirms that ScotRail is increasingly the travel mode of choice for people going to large events in Scotland. 'The fact that we've just delivered the busiest week of 2025 so far shows how important large concerts and events are to our business and the Scottish economy. 'Our frontline staff once again delivered an excellent service for almost two million customers who chose to travel with ScotRail.' Lewis Capaldi has said before his comeback that he was 'living a lifestyle he couldn't afford'. The singer triumphantly returned to the stage in June, performing a surprise set on Glastonbury's Pyramid stage two years after being unable to finish on the same stage. He has since released a new single and announced a tour, including four dates in Scotland in September. During an interview on Heart Breakfast, the 28-year-old said he was 'never intending' to end his 734-day career break before joking that he was living a lifestyle he 'couldn't afford'. 'I didn't know if I would come back to begin with', he said on Friday. 'But a year in, I realised that I'm living a lifestyle that I can't afford. 'But I got the itch, and I started writing again, and I feel good. 'When that sort of started creeping up on my mind, I then had the idea that it would be amazing to come back at Glastonbury. But when I came off stage at the first Glastonbury, no, I didn't have any inkling that I would come back. 'But when it came down to discussing coming back and the best way to do that, it was definitely like 'this will be incredible.' The Bathgate-born singer has since become the latest ambassador for a global footwear brand, teamed up with BetterHelp to give away 734,000 free hours of therapy, and announced a UK tour, which sold out in minutes. It's a far sight away from his comeback performance, before which he didn't want his parents or managers 'anywhere near' his dressing room. 'No, do you know what it's funny, I actually wanted no one', he added. 'Even the band my mum and dad. 'I'd say even band managers and all that, they were backstage in a different area. But for the dressing room and stuff, I didn't want them anywhere near us. Not because they're going to put bad juju on me, it was more that I can really feel people's nervous energy. A special guest has been announced for Chappell Roan's two upcoming sold-out shows in Scotland. The pop star will be taking to the stage as part of Edinburgh Summer Sessions at the Royal Highland Showgrounds on August 26 and August 27, fresh from the release of her latest single 'The Subway'.
