For sellers to reach Delhi and beyond, a cargo train from Kashmir to capital
THE NORTHERN Railways will soon run a Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo (JPP-RCS) train directly between Kashmir and Delhi so as to provide a dependable alternative to fruit and handicraft dealers to showcase their produce across the country. This was approved by the Railway Board on Wednesday, officials said, adding that the train having an SLR (seating cum luggage rake) with eight parcel vans, will run on daily basis between Budham in Kashmir to Delhi's Adarsh Nagar railway station. At present, Kashmir has a goods train bringing cement from Punjab on almost daily basis since early this month. This comes two months after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Vande Bharat Express from Katra to Srinagar on June 6 this year, marking a historic leap in the region's rail connectivity. This cargo train will be run on a pilot basis in the initial year and the security arrangements in it will be made by the state police, the Northern Railways Jammu division said in a statement issued here. It is expected to reach its destination in Delhi in approximately 23 hours, which is faster than road transport from Budgam. The facility of loading and unloading of goods will be provided at Bari Bhrahana station, the statement said. Pointing out that the cargo train is being operated for the first time in Jammu Division, Jammu Division's Divisional Manager Vivek Kumar said that registration fee for booking in it has been reduced. This initiative aims to increase the share of railways in the courier business and provide an efficient, reliable and economical option to the customers, he said, adding that this service is a precise effort to attract the business class to the Indian Railways. Its main objective is to benefit small and big fruit producers of Kashmir by showcasing their unique products such as dry fruits and crafts and to encourage their marketing in India and internationally, he said. Uchit Singhal, the Senior Commerce Divisional Manager, explained that the primary aim of operating this train is to benefit Kashmir's traders and facilitate the delivery of goods, such as apples, saffron, walnuts, Pashmina shawls, carpets, and other handicrafts, to every corner of the country.
