Saowalak stars in Thai romp
Thailand captain Saowalak Pengngam hit a first-half hat-trick, while substitute Ploychompoo Somnuek scored the fourth goal in stoppage time.
The Chaba Kaew are third in Group B, level on points with India, but behind the Blue Tigresses on goal difference. Iraq top the standings with four points from two games.
Timor, who drew 0-0 with Iraq in their opening match, came under pressure as early as the second minute with goalkeeper Gorette Da Costa denying Pattaranan Aupachai's volley from inside the box.
However, Saowalak broke the deadlock three minutes later when Pattaranan's shot was blocked but the rebound fell kindly for the Chaba Kaew forward to convert from close range.
Thailand got their second goal on 31 minutes with Saowalak using her speed to dribble past her marker before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.
An error from Da Costa a minute before the break widened Thailand's advantage with Saowalak completing her hat-trick after pouncing on an errant pass from inside the box.
Thailand got the fourth goal in the second minute of added time from Ploychompoo, who turned in Natcha Kaewanta's pass from inside the area.
Coach Futoshi Ikeda was satisfied with his team's victory but admitted there is still plenty of room for improvement.
"Getting the win in our first game is satisfying but looking back, we created a lot of chances. We should have scored more goals," said Ikeda.
Iraq claimed a 5-2 win over Mongolia in the group's other fixture.
Thailand will face Iraq on Sunday while Timor Leste will aim to bounce back when they will take on India.
FAT pays Siam Sport
The Football Association of Thailand made a second payment of 20 million baht in compensation to Siam Sport Syndicate on Friday.
The FAT was ordered by the Supreme Court in March to pay Siam Sport 360 million baht in damages plus interest for an "unfair" termination of a privileges and TV rights contract.
The incident occurred during Pol Gen Somyot Poompanmoung's tenure as president in 2016.
The FAT chief made the first payment of 25 million baht in April.
Thawatchai in, Nishikaya out
The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has named former Thailand midfielder Thawatchai Dumrong-ongtrakul as the new U23 coach after the sacking of Japanese tactician Takayuki Nishikaya.
Nishikaya had coached the U23 team for five matches and lost all of them. The Japanese received 1.2 million baht in compensation for his contract termination.
Thawatchai left Chonburi after his contract expired last season. He guided the Sharks to the Thai League 2 title, securing promotion to the top flight next season.
The U23 team will participate in three major tournaments later this year, including the Asean U23 Championship (Mandiri Cup) in Indonesia between July 15-29, the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers from Sept 3-9 and the 33rd SEA Games in December.

Top seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn crashed out in the men's singles quarter-finals of the US$2 million BWF China Open 2025 in Changzhou on Friday. Thailand's U23 footballers ready for hostile crowd test, eye final spot
Thailand will take on hosts Indonesia in the semi-finals of the Asean U23 Championship (Mandiri Cup) at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Friday night. Head coach Thawatchai Dumrong-ongtrakul admitted his players did not impress with their performance in the group stage, which saw the team beat Timor Leste 4-0 and draw 0-0 with Myanmar. "We won Group C in the preliminary round, but our form was not that good and there are many things we need to improve and adjust," said Thawatchai during a pre-match press conference on Thursday. "I think the players will perform better in the semi-final against Indonesia. We have come this far in the tournament and we must be ready both mentally and physically to face a good team like Indonesia." He continued, "Indonesia are a good team. We expect a lot of home fans in the stadium for tomorrow's [today's] match and I know the players will be under a lot of pressure but it will be a good experience for all of them. If they come through this match, they will be stronger in future international tournaments," he added. Team captain Seksan Ratree said, "I am very happy that the team qualified for the semi-finals and as the coach said our form is still not good enough and we hope that tomorrow [today] will be a good day for our team." Vietnam and the Philippines will face off in the other semi-final. The match between Thailand and Indonesia will kick off at 8pm and will be live on Thai Rath TV, BG Sports, AIS Play and True Visions Now.

ONE Championship: Chihiro Sawada targets Denice Zamboanga title shot in Japan after submission win
Chihiro Sawada has her sights set on a ONE Championship world title shot – and she wants it in her home country. The Japanese atomweight contender returned to winning ways with a first-round armbar submission of Argentina's Macarena Aragon last Saturday morning at ONE Fight Night 33 in Bangkok. It marked a strong response from the 27-year-old after her first professional loss – a decision defeat to China's Meng Bo in January – and she now has her eye on gold. 'My intention is the same – to go to that Japan card, ONE 173,' Sawada told the Bangkok Post backstage at Lumpinee Stadium. 'I got the win and I want the chance to fight there too.' ONE 173 is set for November 16 at Ariake Arena in Tokyo. But it remains to be seen whether Sawada will get her wish. Ayaka Miura, a former ONE strawweight title challenger who dropped to atomweight last year, will compete against Colombian newcomer Juliana Otalora at ONE Friday Fights 116 – and is believed to be in pole position to challenge newly elevated champion Denice Zamboanga in November. Sawada is currently ranked No 5 in the atomweight MMA division and knows the opportunity may not fall to her just yet. 'If there is no title shot, I want Ham Seo Hee,' she said. 'Or it is going to be Ayaka Miura in Japan.' Sawada, who trains with AACC in Tokyo, dominated from the opening bell against Aragon – who had failed hydration for the bout – before locking in the armbar. 'Armbar is just one of my plans that I had for Aragon,' she said. 'I also prepared other submission techniques like the leg lock, and I have increased my striking skills also. But this time, the armbar – I made it, I executed, and I'm very happy about that.' Despite the finish, Sawada missed out on a US$50,000 performance bonus from ONE chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong. 'I expected the bonus, but maybe this is not the right timing for that – next time,' she said. Asked whether she was compensated in other ways after Aragon's weigh-in issues, she smiled and replied, 'I can't say anything about this!' – though it is likely she received at least 20 per cent of her opponent's fight purse. Sawada was quick to thank her supporters after the win, which improved her overall record to 9-1-1, and 4-1 in ONE Championship. 'Thank you very much to everybody that's been supporting me from Japan – and not only from Japan, from my fans around the world,' she said. 'It means a lot to me. 'And not only that – all the athletes that have been training with me, all my trainers, everybody in my gym, and especially my corners that have been helping me. I thank them a lot.'
